Influence of IOM Report :
Nursing Education : The IOM report reflects evidence that education level of nurses affects health care delivery and outcomes, hence the IOM committee calls for nurses to achieve higher levels of education and suggests that they be educated in a new ways that better prepare them to meet the needs of the population. IOM recommended 80% of nurses be prepared with baccalaureate degrees by 2020, or an 80/20 skill mix of staff. With the attainment of a BSN degree, the nurse becomes more competent and skilled to deliver high-quality care. Also has competencies in other areas like research and evidence-based practice, health policy, teamwork and collaboration, as well as competency in specific areas like community and public health and geriatrics. With improvement in the education system, Standards are set to enter in the profession, profound change in education improved lifelong learning of nurses.
Findings show that religious engagement among students declines during college, but their spirituality shows substantial growth. “Students become more caring, more tolerant, more connected with others, and more actively engaged in a spiritual quest.” (“Cultivating the Spirit – Spirituality in Higher Education”) The authors also found that spiritual growth enhances other outcomes, such as academic performance, psychological well-being, leadership development, and satisfaction with college. The study also identified a number of college activities that contribute to students’ spiritual growth. Some of these–study abroad, interdisciplinary studies, and service learning–appear to be effective because they expose students to new and diverse people, cultures, and ideas. Spiritual development is also enhanced if students engage in “inner work” through activities such as meditation or self-reflection, or if their professors actively encourage them to explore questions of meaning and purpose. By raising public awareness of the key role that spirituality plays in student learning and development, by alerting academic administrators, faculty, and curriculum committees to the importance of spiritual development, and by identifying strategies for enhancing that development, this work encourages institutions to give greater priority to these spiritual aspects of students’ educational and professional development.

Nursing Leadership: The IOM report emphasizes the development of leadership positions for nurses that connect nurses’ capacity to lead changes into the new healthiness, wellness program. Nurses provide the front line healthcare for the elderly (65yrs and above ) in a wide variety of settings, from their home setting, hospital, and community settings. They also provide preventive care e.g immunization, colon cancer screening. With the help of education, Nurses are able to care for the aging population in a more better way. Meeting all their healthcare needs.

According to this statement that “ Nursing is a knowledge based discipline and profession that incorporates a body of knowledge to guide it’s practice” (Smith &Parker, 2015). Nursing profession is changing and evolving very fast to meet the high demand of the nation’s health care needs. Continual learning helps to keep the nurses knowledge current, helps to practice according to the current standards. It also helps to expand their knowledge in new skills learned. The work of the Robert Wood Foundation Committee on the future of nursing was prompted by the glaring challenges that were being faced by the nurses worldwide in their line of duty. The nursing profession as delicate as it is facing a number of complex challenges that have been compromising on the quality-of-care services provided. This put the health of the population at a greater risk if the challenges are not well addressed and the nursing needs met with uttermost concern. It is these challenges and the quest to have a more vibrant, well equipped and empowered nursing force across the US that shaped the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) committee to look into the nursing practice in a number of healthcare systems settings across the US. In the assessment report revealed some glaring disparities in the nurse competencies and the academic credentials across all the states. The reported emphasized on the need for some states to allow nurses to practice to the full extend of their training and competencies in order to promote accessibility to quality care across the country. Additionally, the report emphasized on the need for the nurse education and training to be made more relevant, advanced and strengthened to match the emerging healthcare trends and needs worldwide (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2016). The committee’s fact-finding missions and the recommendations on the future of nursing were crucial to the shaping of the healthcare systems across the US.
It is through the initiative of the RWJF that lead to the development of the IOM report titled,” The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.” The report was in itself a well-researched evidence-based report that had detailed plans on how to promote better nursing experiences and practice for a better future in the healthcare industry. The report main areas of target included the nurse training reforms that would see more nurses advance in their level of academic training to have more nurse with at least a baccalaureate degree and above. There was also need to have more flexible nurse training programs that will be crucial in helping the nurses achieve a lifelong education that will equip them with skills and attitudes to adapt to the emerging trends in nurse practice such as the advancement of technology in nursing.
