Compare two different advanced registered nurse roles with regard to ethical guidelines. Are there any differences in the ethical guidelines that govern these roles? What situations might require one role to respond differently, depending on the ethical guidelines?
There are many avenues available for Registered Nurses within different types of Masters Programs. Advanced Nursing Practice Roles uniquely identify within different specialties. The two types of APN roles I have decided to compare includes Nurse Educator and Nurse Practitioner (Liaison International , 2022).
The Nurse Educator, whether it be college instruction or hospital bedside guidance, has a very important responsibility. Teaching and guiding nursing students, new grads and experienced nurses through gentle but firm instruction is an important balance (American Nurses Association, 2022). Ethical considerations can include providing constructive communication techniques for all facets of learning styles, maintaining confidentiality and anonymity, and recognizing potential of harm so the issue can be swiftly revised and improved. The nurse educator is an important resource for all areas of nursing, and performing this role with compassion and confidence directly influences healthy growth and success within all levels of nursing practices (DeNisco & Barker, 2019).

The American Nurses Association (ANA) published the Nursing Code of Ethics, which serves as a guidance in making decisions. The nursing code of ethics has four core constructs: autonomy, beneficence, justice, and nonmaleficence; over the years, nine provisional statements have been added to help further guide nurses in all areas of practice (ANA, 2015).
In the future, I hope to work in Nursing Informatics. Some certification and licensure requirements differ from those of the four traditional APRN roles because informatics is a nontraditional APRN role. According to the APRN Consensus Model, informatics does not qualify as direct patient care and thus does not require regulatory recognition beyond a Registered Nursing license (APRN Consensus Work Group & National Council of State Boards of Nursing APRN Advisory Committee, 2008). The ANCC offers board certification in Informatics Nursing. You must have active BON RN licensure, a bachelor’s degree in nursing, at least two years of RN practice, 30 hours of informatics continuing education within three years, and meet practice hour requirements to be certified (ANCC, 2021). In my case, completing this graduate level program will fulfill my practice hour requirements.
While the roles of an NP and informatics nurse greatly differ; one being a clinical role and the latter being a nonclinical role; the

ethical principles are the same. DeNisco and Barker (2016) state that ethics “focuses on the rightness and wrongness of actions, as well as the goodness and badness of motives and ends” (p.652). Meaning that ethical principles are used in decision making and judgement in both APRN roles even though they are applied to different circumstances.

Ethics is the study of moral rules and the systems that support them, such as their nature, purposes, and justification (Barker & DeNisco, 2016). Ethical dilemmas confront nurses today, including advanced practice registered nurses, and it is critical to establish good ethical nursing practice that is best for the patient’s outcome.
Psychiatric clinical nurse specialists (CNS) use best practices and evidence-based care to provide nursing care to patients suffering from psychiatric disorders (American Nurses Association, 2020). Because of the diagnosis of mental illness, the care of patients in this field may be difficult and overwhelming. To practice ethically and avoid bias, patience and empathy are required. When dealing with difficult patients, it is critical for a CNS to recognize their own feelings and not allow emotions to prevent them from providing effective patient care. The CNS should try to maintain neutrality while continuing to provide the best possible care for the patient (Laskowski, 2001).
Nurse Practitioners (NP) provide primary, acute, and specialty health care to patients of all ages by assessing, diagnosing, and treating illnesses and injuries (APRN, 2020). NPs face ethical challenges when dealing with difficult patients and family members. Patients’ medical issues can cause psychological or emotional problems, which can lead to hopelessness and behavioral problems. Regardless of the patient’s behavioral issues, NPs are still responsible for meeting the patient’s needs by adhering to ethical standards in their profession (Barker & DeNisco, 2016).
