AACN DNP Essentials That Most Align to a Doctoral Project Completion
The enactment of the eight DNP essentials has been central to the competencies and curricular elements for the DNP course. These essentials align with the completion of the doctoral project completion. One of the AACN DNP essentials that align with completing a doctoral project, in general, is the scientific underpinnings for practice (Spencer, 2019). During a DNP project, nursing students engage in thorough scrutiny of the middle-range nursing theories and their potential application in the DNP project and as leading frameworks. These theories then form the foundation for the DNP projects to build and spur such projects to completion. When a nursing student completes a DNP project, the individual is in a position to utilize science-based concepts towards the evaluation and enhancement of patient care, health care delivery and ensure that the patient outcomes are at acceptable standards.
There are so many sources that entail the life of Florence Nightingale. This version makes me envision Florence as a very inspiring accolade. Florence Nightingale refused to be married when she was 17 years old as she chose to answer her calling despite her parents being against enrolling as a nursing student at the Lutheran Hospital in Germany. Nightingale faced a cholera outbreak in an unsanitary environment when she returned from school to London and worked at Middlesex hospital. She worked hard to improve the environment’s sanitation, significantly decreasing the number of deaths. All the hard work eventually affected Nightingale’s health. The Crimean War happened between the British and Russian Empires, and many soldiers were admitted into military hospitals. There were not enough female nurses stationed at Crimea hospitals. England then was angry due to the neglect of the soldiers who had fallen ill and injured and lacked medical care due to insufficient caregivers leading to dreadful unsanitary, and inhumane conditions. Nightingale then was called to her calling despite barely recovering from her illness. She assembled a team of nurses and sailed them to Crimea. Nightingale and her nurses warned of the conditions they were about to face but were still unprepared for what they witnessed upon their arrival.

Essential VII, “Clinical Prevention and Population Health for Improving the Health of the Nation,” is the other DNP requirement that fits with the completion of a doctoral project (Jenkins, 2018). This essential says that a DNP student needs to think about quality improvement as an important part of practice to help stop diseases and infections and improve the health of the whole population. During a DNP program, students work on projects that tend to find gaps, improve clinical outcomes, lower risks, and treat different diseases (Valdres & Smith, 2019). The implication is that these students need to know how to correctly evaluate and interpret information about the environment, workplace, biostatistics, and epidemiology in order to improve the health of communities and individuals. So, when a DNP student finishes a DNP project, the projects they have already done give them the skills they need to lead strategies to fix preventable health problems in the population that cause death and disability.

The third AACN DNP project that aligns to the completion of doctoral project completion is essential IV “Information systems/technology and patient care technology for the improvement and transformation of health care” (Ahmed et al., 2018). In the era of technology, almost all the DNP projects to be undertaken by DNP students are technology-based or use some form of technology, ranging from informatics, healthcare technological equipment to technologies that improve the efficiency of staff (Valdres & Smith, 2019). During the process of completing the DNP project, nursing students use patient care technologies and information to enhance clinical decision-making and practice leadership. In addition, such projects also enable the DNP students to sufficiently understand the technology and technological applications and skills to foster technological innovation. Besides, they can assess healthcare customer information, gauge its appropriateness, and fine-tune operations to improve care.
You are exactly right. Nurses outside of mental health tend to not know how to handle patients with mental illness in its acute form. I remember my first acutely mentally ill patient in the ICU. I (we) did not know what to do. He was placed in 4-point leather restraints. When I think back on that time now, I feel horrible that we didn’t do a better job of taking care of him.
I applaud you for wanting to implementing crisis prevention intervention training in the emergency department to improve patient outcomes in nonmental health settings. Perhaps, it could eventually spread throughout the hospital as well. From my experience, it is needed and necessary. And as a DNP-prepared nurse, you will have acquired the skills necessary to be successful at implementing such change (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2006).
Employers have identified DNP-prepared nurses as leaders, having a positive impact on patient outcomes, as role models, and improving organizational systems by introducing more effective care delivery models (Beeber, Palmer, Waldrop, Lynn, & Jones, 2019).

A doctoral degree carries a certain set of expectations associated with the completion of advanced educational attainment. Earning a DNP degree is no exception. What are the expectations associated with a DNP-prepared nurse? How might these expectations differ among nursing staff without a DNP degree?
The role of a DNP-prepared nurse is multifaceted; they can serve as nurse educators, policy and legislation advocates, direct nursing care supervisors, or advanced practice nurses responsible for tracking, installing, and monitoring initiatives aimed at improving nursing and healthcare delivery. Regardless of the expectations associated with a DNP-prepared nurse, throughout your program of study, you will hone the skills necessary to enact each of these roles. Consider which role you are most excited about. What do you hope to accomplish in the realm of professional nursing practice with your DNP degree?
For this Discussion, reflect on your personal motivations to pursue a DNP degree.
