1-Think about the application of disaster mental health in the field. How is this skillset and application helpful? For example, how does it tie into Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and how is that helpful in a post-disaster context?
Maslow hierarchically has ordered human needs from the most basic one on the bottom, immediate physiological needs (like water, food, and health care) to self-actualization in the top. He claimed that people will normally strive to fulfill their needs but do so in a hierarchical way. In order to focus on esteem, first, all the ‘lower’ positioned needs will have to be met.
Maslow’s pyramid of human needs can also be applied in case of a disaster or calamity. While taking this hierarchy of needs into account, it becomes clear that in times of crisis, even the most basic human needs are at risk. During a disaster or calamity, people can lose their homes, their access to food, water, and health care is threatened, the overall situation could be unsafe, and even the loss of loved ones or one’s own life are potential risks. Individuals and their psychological, physical, and social needs are challenged, causing stress to those that fall victim to a disaster or calamity. In order to minimize traumatic stress after disasters or calamities, first of all, the primary, physiological needs of victims will have to be met.
2-How would this skillset and knowledge help you in the work you do in emergency management? How can you apply these skills or where would they come in useful?
The skillset and knowledge that will help me in the work as an emergency manager is prioritizing the needs. The first step to approach all needs in disaster management is identifying the motivating goals and their relative values. It is assumed regularly that the actions of individuals during emergencies are typically consistent with the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. For example, during an emergency, the responders assume that at the lowest level, people will make decisions with respect to evacuating or sheltering in place based on their thoughts of consequences in terms of their physiological needs versus their safety needs.

The element of Self-Care that I find helpful, and I would use to keep my stress levels under control is communicating with others. Based on what we have studied in this beautiful course, first and foremost, take care of yourself and those around you. This course has taught us about the importance of communication, so there is no shame in reaching out for help even long before things get too hard to cope with. I can say that having friends that are not in the same field help but it is hard for them to understand the potential stresses of the job, so hanging out with coworkers or others in the field outside of work could be better, so don’t be afraid during asking the tough questions if you are concerned about a coworker! That concern could make the difference in someone who is on the fence of making one of those decisions none of us want to see made. Besides that, do some workout, have a social life, and do any personal hobbies like cooking, swimming, playing games, or whatever works.
4- Finally, please indicate what you found the most beneficial aspects of THIS COURSE – Please name any strengths or areas or improvement and feel free to add recommendations for future years?
This course has helped us to recognize the contexts and circumstances that comprise the trauma environment, including natural disasters, disasters resulting from non-intentional and intentional human acts, and communities influenced by environmental factors such as impoverishment, disease, and human conflict. We understand the most common stress reactions to disaster in adults and children, the physiology of stress reactions, and how to manage that stress. From my perspective, the most beneficial thing in this course is it encouraged us to talk to each other, look out for each other, and take care of others.
