I think the “Employment and Training for Homeless Persons” study provided the best model for using research to influence social policy. Per Berk’s article on applied sociological research, the best research requires the use of multiple methods, and it is clear which data is statistically significant. This study utilized both a questionnaire, observation, and interviews. The statistically significant data was explicitly stated as having a chi square value of less than .1. Berk would also comment that this study was strengthened because it was a team effort since this was a graduate class working together. I think that because this article focuses on job training at two large shelters in a city, the outcomes of the research can be applied to small shelters as well. One question I had from this reading is what happens after these individuals leave the shelter. Do they apply for HomeBASE so they can be helped get into stable housing with financial assistance and case management? Are these resources available to apply?

This article heavily relies on interviewing and lacks a strong interdisciplinary approach. Although some surveying is completed, it is not as strong as the Employment and Training article. It is hard to apply the findings of this study elsewhere because only two types of shelters: mental health and geriatric shelter. If more shelters were involved, I think the article would be stronger in influencing social policy.

In my own worldview, spirituality is acknowledging that even if people have their own deity, the common ground is knowing that there may be a higher being that exists in the world. For me, this higher being is good and that we are created quite similarly for a reason. I like to think that we are all connected somehow as our layers are so similar and we are made out of similar things, biologically speaking. I like to think that there is something good in humankind and so I meditate about this almost daily. It seems as if my culture that is heavy on Christianity plays a role, but I have a lot of love toward differences.

I feel that this has influenced my patient care because not only is individualized care important, it is important to accept the person’s beliefs and care for them without any judgment. My spirituality, which also is influenced heavily by Christianity, has taught me that having faith through a higher being includes all of life’s good existence in all that humans experience (Bogue and Hogan, 2018). This is what exists in ordinary life while doing things such as traveling, forming relationships, and as our text stated, also in the nursing field to name a few (Bogue and Hogan, 2018). For me, I find satisfaction whenever I care for my patients even if the nursing field is one of the craziest decisions I’ve ever done in my life. However, serving others gave me purpose as a human being which I am willing to do.
