Unit 1 Discussion
Linking a Research Question to a Research Framework
For this discussion, consider how other doctoral-level learners applied a framework to their study.
Begin by selecting, downloading, and reading one of the following dissertations or capstone publications, all found in the Studies for this unit:
Garcia’s 2016 capstone project, “Effectiveness of the Development and Implementation of a Nurse-Led Diabetic Foot Screening Clinic.”
Custer’s 2012 dissertation, “Developing a Model of Client Satisfaction With a Rehabilitation Continuum of Care.”
Roy’s 2014 capstone project, “COPD Dyspnea Palliation Project: Dyspnea Palliation in End-Stage COPD Patients.”
After you have read the selected capstone project or dissertation, complete the following for your initial post:
Cite and briefly summarize the dissertation or project capstone you selected.
Describe the primary research question or problem of the dissertation or capstone you selected.
Describe the framework(s) (provide details about each concept and/or theory and/or model utilized).
Explain how and why the author/researcher linked the research question or problem to the framework.
Include at least one APA-formatted citation (in-text, as well as the full reference). The citation may be from course textbooks, assigned readings, or an outside source.
Translational research appears to be a tool used to close the gap between evidence-base practice and the clinical delivery of direct nursing care. It is described as a way to improve population health and the delivery system. Translational science looks for ways to implement evidence based practice, so being something entirely different than EBP, it works hand in hand with EBP to improve patient outcomes. Translational research digs in to make a clear understanding of what implementation strategies work, the people they work for and answers the question of why. This body of knowledge, translation science, provides a base for guiding the selection of implementation strategies. (Titler, 2018) The are levels of translational research, T1 developing treatments and interventions, T2 testing the effectiveness of those treatments and interventions and T3 is dissemination and implementation for change. In addition another resource describes 5 phases beginning with T0 through T5. T0 starts with basic research, preclinical. T1 is testing on a small group of humans, T2 and T3 are more trials on an even larger group of humans. T4 is the outcome research / translation to practice and lastly T5 goes out to the population or translation to the community. This type of research seems more hands on and creates positive outcomes to the patients who are in need of direct and immediate care.

Unit 2 Discussion
Qualitative Research Approaches
After completing the unit readings, perform additional research to find one scholarly qualitative research article. Select from the following research approaches: case study research, narrative research, Delphi Technique, or action research. Read about that particular approach from the discussion readings linked in the Studies for this unit.
In your initial post:
Cite and briefly summarize the article you found.
Describe the research method you found and how this method is used in your field.
Discuss why you believe the author chose the particular research method.
Describe the advantages and weaknesses associated with this approach.
Include at least one APA-formatted citation (in-text, as well as the full reference). The citation may be from course textbooks, assigned readings, or an outside source.
Response Guidelines
In each response, ask questions or provide feedback on the learner’s post. What more would you like to know that was not included in the post? Refer to the Faculty Expectations Message for discussion response guidelines.
If your response offers an alternative viewpoint or refers to the ideas or work of others, your post must be supported by citing an outside source, using APA formatting.

Unit 3 Discussion
Recruiting and Sampling
Choose from one of the following scenarios that describe a health care or public health issue or problem:
Scenario A
The rise in obesity among low-income Latino preschoolers is a public health concern. The childcare environment is considered an influential arena in the early development of lifestyle habits that can potentially lead to childhood obesity. There is a need to explore the role and potential corrective influence of family childcare providers.
Scenario B
Weight loss is a much desired goal, even in non-morbid patients with Type 2 Diabetes; however, non-morbid patients frequently encounter great difficulty in meeting the therapeutic weight loss goal set by their physicians. Bariatric surgery appears to be a viable alternative to medication for these patients. Before going to the expense of conducting a randomized clinical trial, it is important to investigate the opinion and preferences of non-morbid Type 2 Diabetes patients regarding the value of, and concerns about, bariatric surgery.
Scenario C
The management of diabetes is a central focus in some Native American tribal regions of the U.S. Continuous quality improvement is an important aspect of improving service delivery rates and clinical outcome measures. Because one of the well-recognized factors involved in a well-designed health care delivery system is the sense of ownership (over the diabetes management process), it is important to explore how this sense is understood and expressed in this population.
In your initial post to this discussion, identify the scenario you have chosen and use the reading and resource material from this unit to address the following:
Describe the approach you would take for recruiting and sampling patients for this study.
Describe which technique you would use to collect data (such as focus group, interview, et cetera), and explain why you selected it.
Describe the issues of credibility and trustworthiness you should consider for your particular scenario, and describe how you might resolve potential problems.
Note:
In the e-book, Nursing and Healthcare Research at a Glance, there is information about conducting research with special groups (children, young people, adults, elderly, disabled, and vulnerable) on pages 130–158.
Umaña-Taylor and Bámaca’s 2004 article, “Conducting Focus Groups With Latino Populations: Lessons From the Field,” from Family Relations, volume 53, issue 3, pages 261–272, provides insights into conducting cross-cultural focus groups.
In your initial post, include at least one APA-formatted citation (in-text, as well as full reference). The citation should be from materials you have read during this unit. It may be from course textbooks, assigned readings, or an outside source.

Unit 5 Discussion
Recruitment and Sampling
Scenarios
Choose from one of the following scenarios
Scenario A
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome affects the quality of life of many individuals. The use of CPAP therapy is considered a best-practice therapeutic approach in treating this condition, but it has potential adverse effects. It is not clear what effect the therapy itself has on cardiac function and the quality of life of ethnic groups at higher risk for heart disease. You need to perform an inexpensive and relatively quick study about this issue in a South Asian immigrant community in your state.
Scenario B
Rheumatoid arthritis is a painful condition that commonly creates a chronic financial burden on minority populations. Evidence-based research suggests that yoga exercise is associated with a reduction in pain, more energy, and improved sleep. It is important to study the effects of yoga on inflammatory biomarkers, pain, and well-being in this target population.
Scenario C
Seattle protocols (a series of evidence-based psycho-social interventions that incorporate exercise training) have been shown to reduce disability associated with Alzheimer’s disease and depression in dementia patients. A local nursing home would like to explore the effects of this protocol on fitness, mood, and cognitive function in its elderly population.
Instructions
In your initial post, address the following. Consider the readings and resource material from this unit as you formulate your post:
Identify and describe a sampling approach and recruiting strategy for obtaining a representative sample of the population described in the research scenario you selected.
Describe the pros and cons associated with your strategy.
Do additional research to find a scholarly article where such a sampling approach and recruitment approach have been used, under similar research circumstances. Cite and briefly summarize the article.
In your initial post, include at least one APA-formatted citation (in-text, as well as a full reference). The citation should be from materials you have read during this unit. It may be from course textbooks, assigned readings, or an outside source.

Unit 3 Assignment
Identifying a Problem or Issue and an Intervention
For this assignment, identify a health care or public health problem, issue, or gap in practice and propose an intervention that may improve or solve this problem. The problem, issue, or gap in practice could be derived from your own experience or not. The intervention you choose must take into consideration what is already considered best practice in your state or nationally, knowledge gained through experience and other experts, and local patient or organization preferences.
You will address this problem, issue, or gap in all the assignments in this course, so take a look at those assignments now. Make sure the problem and intervention you select in this assignment will also work for the other assignments.
Submit a 3–4 page paper, using APA format, in which you:
Identify a health care or public health problem or issue (organizational process or clinical practice) that needs to be improved.
Describe why this problem or issue is of significant concern to certain stakeholders, patients, or community members.
Describe your evidence-based practice or quality improvement (EBP/QI) intervention.
Briefly describe your ideal inter-professional team for this EBP/QI project and why this team would be best suited to address this issue.
Using the Researching Theory in the Capella Library library guide from the Studies in this unit and/or literature search engines, identify and describe a single theory that can provide some big-picture insight into predicting or rationally explaining why a relationship might exist between your improvement intervention approach and the issue itself. Justify your selection of this theory by finding and describing similar studies where this theory has been used.
Design a diagram or concept map (along with an explanatory two-paragraph narrative) that visually represents how you expect the big-picture theoretical concept(s) will relate to key parts of your study.
