Summary

In her article, Wood (2018) discusses the importance of writing for nurses, both in faculty and in practice settings. Wood is categorical that all nurses should understand that writing allows them to share their skills, acquired knowledge, experiences and research findings, especially when after conducting projects. Wood asserts that writing for a publication is a component of nursing role irrespective of one being in the clinical practice or elsewhere. The article emphasizes the need for nurses to understand the writing process, especially the format, as a means of effectively communicating their message and acquired knowledge. Nurses require writing skills to do their university or higher level assignment. The author emphasizes the need for nurses to adhere to academic guidelines when writing for publications like the scholarly nursing journals.

One of the critical aspects that Wood discusses in her article is the writing process. The author asserts that one needs to make a decision on a subject that they will explore. She opines that nurses must ensure that their subject matter inform practice and leads to dissemination of knowledge for improved care delivery (Wood, 2018). One must also select an appropriate journal to publish their writing. An emphasis should be being used to the type of journals as it assists in getting an idea of the required writing approach or style. Nurses must also know the submission process of their articles to journals in different situations.

Direct Quotation

Wood (2018) states that writing is an essential part of nursing role as it leads to effective dissemination of knowledge, sharing of skills, and increased application of best practices to enhance quality of care. Wood notes “However, the nurses delivering care often do not realize that they too should be writing for publication.” The implication is that all nurses, irrespective of their specialties and levels of expertise can write and have their works published in major nursing and healthcare journals.
