In their multiple case study, Shiells et al. (2020) assess the perception of nursing homes’ staff in three countries in Europe concerning the use of electronic patient records in planning and delivery of dementia care. using an exploratory qualitative research model, the researchers conducted staff interviews on ways that electronic patient records (EPRs) facilitate or hinder assessment and care planning in dementia nursing homes. Conversely, the study’s main disadvantage is its common approach to the issue of adopting EPR systems in nursing
homes that have different operational and ownership models. For instance, the study gives a general approach to the use or adoption of EPR systems in hospitals and fails to distinguish public and private nursing homes in the three countries where it researches the issue (Shiells et al., 2020). Secondly, the study identifies certain limitations that the researchers faced during the research process. These include challenges with recruitment of participants, different systems of care across Europe, and selection bias.
