According to the textbook, nurses in various settings are adopting a research-based (or evidence-based) practice that incorporates research findings into their decisions and interactions with patients. How do you see this being applied in your workplace? In addition, how can you strive to make spirituality and self-care a practice for your patients as well as yourself? How does this practice align with the Christian worldview?

Nurses use the principles of evidence-based practice to make optimal decisions about patient care. When nurses integrate the best available science into their practice, they work from a holistic and patient-centered approach (Lehane et al. 2018). Evidence-based practices have proven to lead to better patient, provider, and institutional outcomes, such as more consistent care and reduced costs. When scientific evidence is applied to practice, it helps deliver high-quality, safe care and improves patient outcomes (Lehane et al.  2018). Also, it can save time, as nurses can stop engaging in activities that have no known benefit to patients. For example, nurses used to spend up to 20 minutes a day bathing each patient and changing their dressings, until recent research revealed that some dressings are better left in place longer and that daily baths don’t impact outcomes (University of St Augustine, 2020). However, there are some circumstances it may be indicated to perform these practices daily or even more often, but it depends on the individual case.

Spirituality is a key element in patient-centered care as it takes a patient’s faith and belief systems into account when providing care thus allowing patients. Nurses use relationships and therapeutic communication to meet the needs of the mind, and physical therapeutic interventions such as medications or procedures to meet the needs of the body (Connerton et al. 2018). For my patients, firstly I conduct a spiritual assessment to identify the spiritual needs and preferences of patients. For spiritually inclined patients, prayer has served as a primary means of experiencing consolation, healing, and hope. I am a Christian and, in some instances, I would ask my patients if they would like me to pray with them or offer some encouraging words as well as listening to their concerns with a compassionate heart. In addition to this, I would also consult the hospital chaplain for catholic patients to pray, receive holy communion and provide spiritual counseling.

While attending to the needs of patients is certainly at the core of what it means to be a nurse but attending to their own self-care through practices like mindful body scanning, prayer, and meditative walking becomes equally important. My self- care regimen involves spending time with my family, going to Sunday mass and doing things that I enjoy.

Nurses use EBP to provide patients with safe, quality care and to improve outcomes. When developing EBP, one is looking at research already conducted (Helbig, 2018). My employer uses EBP for hospital-wide wide patient care. For example, I work on a GI floor. Our patients receive new ileostomy or colostomy placements regularly. However, EBP shows enhanced recovery is better than traditional recovery methods. We encourage our patients to ambulate within 4 hours post-op, intake 500mls within 8 hours post-op, and start patients off on a regular diet. Most patients are educated before surgery.

Workplace spirituality in nursing is mostly defined and researched from the individual viewpoint. The definition includes dimensions of inner life, meaningful work, interconnectedness, transcendence, and alignment between values (Pirkola et al., 2016). A sense of community and meaningful work are the most important dimensions of workplace spirituality in health care.

My goal is to view every shift as 12 hours to make a difference in my patients’ lives. Not just the medical part of the tasking and the critical thinking that comes naturally. But to give my patients the TLC they need in this, their hardest hour. They are down, ill, alone at night. I develop a rapport with them and make sure they are as comfortable as possible. I help them get clean, and pain-free (if possible), meet needs, tidy the room, clarify the night’s plan of care, and expectations from me, and make sure the patient and I are on the same page as far as the doctor’s plan. This may be reiterating the day Ds notes. I offer prayer if appropriate. I always offer a warm blanket, fan, and/or aromatherapy. I do my best to give holistic care and treat each patient with the utmost dignity and respect.

Selfcare is a personal struggle, to be honest. I do need to prioritize “me” time more than I do. I truly feel guilty not spending my extra time with my family since I’m so tired with the night shift and school all the time. I try and use any extra time to be with my family. I want to start going for 30-minute walks daily. It’s been a personal goal for a while.

When it comes to my Christian worldview, I try to treat others the way I want to be treated. It’s a simple rule, but it works for my personal and professional life. I try every day to be a better human than the day before. I am not a perfect mom, wife, sister, daughter, best friend, student, nurse, tia, or daughter-in-law, but I do my best. I do have a personal relationship with my savior. I know where I’m going when my earthly days are done. I’m confident with my actions on earth. I do my best, that’s all we can do.

When it comes to nurses using evidence-based practice in healthcare the ultimate goal is to make the best decision that consistently improves quality care, patient safety, better patient outcomes, and a higher value in the clinical outcomes within the clinical setting (Conner et al., 2023). The different ways nurses can incorporate evidence-based practice with the patients is by making sure to ask clear questions during the duration of the patient care within the medical facility and also seeing what will be the right end goal to improve the patient’s health conditions (American Nurse Association [ANA], 2023). Nurses can use expertise with any new information gathered from the patient or patient’s medical history, signs, and symptoms to make the best decision for treatment along with collaborating with other healthcare professionals for a higher effective treatment (American Nurse Association [ANA], 2023).

In the hospital, one way to apply evidence-based practice in the workplace is to prevent the spread of infections through proper hand hygiene skills and implementing the seven rights of administrating medication. Since hand hygiene is one the best evidence-based practices that has proven to prevent or reduce health-care-associated infections just by washing your hands with soap and water for at least 15 seconds, and using hand sanitizers (when hands are not visibility soil), are some of the techniques to kill germs and prevent the spread of microorganisms from one person to another person (Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention [CDC], 2019). Another practice is to use the seven rights of administrating medication to patients which are the right patient, the right dose, the right route, the right drug, the right time, the right response, and the right documentation, so this prevents medication errors, improved patient safety, build nurse confidences levels, and gives an understanding with administrating medication the correct way to prevent harm or negligence (Jafaru & Abubaker, 2022).

The World Health Organization stated that medication errors have reduced by 50% and any major severe harm to the patient when used safely (Jafaru & Abubaker, 2022). One way to use spirituality and self-care in the healthcare practice for patients as well as myself is to be aware of the patient’s religious practice. For example, if the patient wants to hold hands to pray together, or ask for help to read verses in the Bible, meditate, play spiritual music, or read spiritual verses in the Bible or any spiritual handbook I find it to be so meaningful and helpful in the patient spiritual healing. The importance of listening to the patient’s needs so it can provide some pieces of consolation, hope, and healing to alleviate the patient’s illness (Nilsson, 2022). Another example is providing education to patients about self-care by creating a care plan for eating healthier, keeping doctor appointments, doing at least 15 to 30 minutes of light exercise just by walking, or meditative walking, meditating, and implementing the mindfulness practice with self-care management this can reduce stress, and contribute to a more holistically to a healthier lifestyle and enhance the patient wellness (Nilsson, 2022). I find getting proper sleep, praying, working out, eating my fruits and vegetables, and sometimes doing deep breathing techniques to reduce stress and is good for my self-care. Christian nurses believe that God teaches us in Matthew 22:37-39 “Love thy neighbor as thyself”, so it is important as a Christian nurse to be caring, have compassion for another person or patients, and have value, dignity, and in another human being life as God sees us (Rieg et al., 2018).

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you.

Please, be advised I do NOT accept any assignments by email. If you are having technical issues with uploading an assignment, contact the technical department and inform me of the issue. If you have any issues that would prevent you from getting your assignments to me by the deadline, please inform me to request a possible extension. Note that working fulltime or overtime is no excuse for late assignments. There is a 5%-point deduction for every day your assignment is late. This only applies to approved extensions. Late assignments will not be accepted.

If you think you would be needing accommodations due to any reasons, please contact the appropriate department to request accommodations.

Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.

Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
