Topic 2 DQ 1

Texas State Board of Nursing is my primary license home which is not a multistate but with the need to work in the state of Georgia, I change my license to a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state which permitted me to practice in Georgia.

The agreement between NLC practice states allows registered nurses like me and of practical nurses (LPN) holders to enjoy the full potential of nursing which is caring for patient regardless of one’s state of residence. This privilege grants nurses the benefit to practice in our home state and in other compact states. The NLC is an initiative aimed at increasing access to patient care across state lines by streamlining multistate licensure requirements (Bergman et al., 2022)

Think about the mobility and flexibility benefits of multistate license to practice without the need to obtain multiple licenses from each state in responding to needs or in supporting our colleagues across the borders. The benefit of effective and efficiency in telehealth is another one. With NLC, a nurse can reside in NYC and work or support healthcare in LAX, with the use of telehealth rendering services to patient, as presented by Bright her article that telehealth/e-health interventions are increasing in use (Bright 2023). Location do no longer stand as a barrier to access to healthcare elevating the problem of nursing shortage in certain regions, simultaneously minimize unnecessary barriers to access to care for their citizens as the case was during the COVID 19 pandemic because, telehealth has been used for various topics  including diagnosis and management, education and training, consultation, and surveillance, as well as to provide an umbrella term for the various novel technologies used to improve the delivery of healthcare services (Alkhawaldeh et al., 2023) .

The NLC idea enhances collaboration among nurses, improving engagement, and interconnections by understanding what unique ideas other state is implement that can be of benefit in other state.

If nursing is to be a strong unify body, all states should endorse the NLC and be a participant. Whether a nurse practice electronically or in person, must uphold the nurse practice act of the state in which the patient being treating is located (Bergman et al., 2022). In making she nurses abide by the nursing practice act, licensure and disciplinary information on nurses are shared among the Compact States and the public through a comprehensive database called NURSYS (Bergman et al., 2022).

Sample Answer 2 for NUR 513 Identify at least two regulatory bodies, and your state’s nurse practice act

Identify at least two regulatory bodies, and your state’s nurse practice act, that specify certification, licensure requirements, or scope of practice for your specialty. Discuss the way these influence the educational requirements and experiences for your specialty. Advanced practice registered nurses must incorporate the APRN consensus model in their response.

In your response to peers, discuss a specific guideline or change imposed by a regulating body or industry regulation and explain the how this affects your daily practice. Cite at least one source to support your response.

The Minnesota Board of Nursing (2023) is one of several regulatory bodies that protect the health of the people and their safety by ensuing guidelines for nurse education, nurse licensure and practice. Also, Minnesota Board of Nursing has several requirements that need to be met prior to being granted a licensure. An application needs to be submitted to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) exam.  A Criminal Background Check is required which includes providing fingerprints. The applicant also must provide evidence of not partaking in misconduct that resulted in disciplinary action. Lastly, submit verification of completed nursing program. The Registered Nurse Licensure must be renewed every two years with 24 hours of continued education. If a Registered Nurse has a specialty certificate that is current such as Certified Critical Care Nurse (CCCN) or Certified Wound Ostomy Nurse (CWON), it fulfills the continued education requirements. I am a Certified Wound Ostomy Nurse and because of this specialty I do not have to complete 24 hours of continued education every two years.

The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCNCB, 2014), is another regulatory body of which sets, maintains, and evaluates standards for certification and re-certification in wound, ostomy, continence (WOC) and foot care (FC) nursing at all levels (WOCNCB, 2014). The WOCNCB is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABNSC), and it is the only accrediting body specifically for nursing certification, is the standard setting body for nursing certification program (WOCNCB, 2014). To be eligible for a licensure, it is required to have a current Registered Nurse license with a bachelor’s or higher degree and graduate from an accredited WOC Nursing Education Program (WOCNCB, 2014).

To maintain the Wound and Ostomy Certification, I must re certify every five years while continuing to have an active Registered Nurse License and renew my certification prior to the expired certification date. I renew my certification every five years by taking and passing the wound and ostomy exams of which are proctored.

According to Boehning & Haddad (2023), Nursing Practice Act (NPA) provides guiding principles for the scope of nursing regulation to include defining phrases and terms for the intent of the law, defining the composition of the board members, defining nursing school educational program standards, defining the scope of nursing practice, overseeing licensure processes, protecting titles, and providing grounds for disciplinary actions for violations. The NPA has written laws in which the legislature from each state creates and oversees the practice of nursing. The Board of Nursing in each state has the authority to follow these laws and enforce them.

Sample Answer 3 for NUR 513 Identify at least two regulatory bodies, and your state’s nurse practice act

The Board of Registered Nursing is a state driven regulatory body associated with a large array of business regarding details such as RN licensure, standards of practice and disciplinary actions (California Board of Registered Nursing. 2022). The California Nurse Practice Act encompasses the laws of California pertaining to elements within our field. It is updated every year and helps govern the innerworkings of the California Board of Nursing business and profession codes as well as the core regulations. (California Board of Registered Nursing. 2022). The federal regulatory process has many different initiatives for nurses and the healthcare system. One that is very important is the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). The ACA addresses affordable insurance, affordable healthcare and medical innovation for low-income families (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. 2022).

These regulatory bodies strongly impact nursing practices, patient outcomes, and positive actions within the everchanging healthcare system (DeNisco & Barker, 2019). It is vital within the nursing profession to stay up to date on annual changes within our practice. The significance of different improvements influence nursing and healthcare by providing straight forward knowledge and definition of expectations required to maintain the high standard of care within the medical system. It is important for these entities to research and identify the disparities associated with different regions of the country to pinpoint specific community needs and actively combat unique inequalities and imbalances associated with all types of societies and cultures.

Sample Answer 4 for NUR 513 Identify at least two regulatory bodies, and your state’s nurse practice act

I have many goals for this course and graduate school in general. My biggest goal is to fully engage and to absorb as much information as possible. I have limited knowledge on the information in this class, but I am hoping that I will have a great understanding by the end of this class. To keep myself accountable, I want to be actively working on schoolwork at least 5 days per week, whether this is doing assigned reading, discussion posts, or other assignments. There is a lot of information to learn in this class, and I want to get the absolute most out of it.

My next biggest goal is to take the time to read my classmates discussion posts, even if I am not replying to them. Everyone within this class has a unique background within nursing, and it is always great to learn from a different perspective. My fellow classmates have a very diverse background of knowledge and expertise, and I am very excited to learn from their work experiences.

My final goal is to try my absolute hardest to get straight A’s. I am aware that getting an A in every class is not the most important thing, but I am easily motivated by grades. I have always been a student who is disappointed to get anything less than an A, but this is obviously a much harder program, and I am working 50+ hours per week, so it could definitely be a challenge. I am excited and nervous to see what the remainder of this class and program will bring.

Sample Answer 5 for NUR 513 Identify at least two regulatory bodies, and your state’s nurse practice act

My goal in life is simple- to make a difference in my life and the life of others that I have met and touched. Nursing is my way to do that whether it be at the bedside, in nursing leadership, or as a nurse practitioner in the future. My life’s journey was never easy. It was peppered with a lot of trials and hardships that sometimes I can’t imagine I was able to overcome but here I am emerging to be stronger than ever.

The reason why I went back to school is to change the trajectory of my nursing career. I feel that the bedside is still a fun and challenging nursing experience but it is too stressful. My coworkers say that I don’t seem to be bothered as I take care of critical patients. I can still keep my composure and I can still critically think despite the odds. But I am getting tired of the many issues in healthcare and I am trying to learn ways to improve our nursing career. I worked in a prominent healthcare institution in New York. Clientele or patients come from all backgrounds, cultures, and financial statuses. Some are elites and others are illegal immigrants living in New York. They have one thing in common and that is their hearts are failing and we do everything to send them back home to their families. I work with the best minds in the world. They can be the best cardiologist, cardiothoracic surgeons, and other experts in their field of specialties. I also worked with fellows and residents that are still specializing in the field of their choice and my fellow healthcare workers. In other words, New York is already stressful in itself and I am working in one of the most stressful fields in the world of healthcare. I am not complaining but sometimes the stress gets to me. I also have a lot of family and personal struggles that compound my life. Having said that, I am delighted to take the challenge of this online learning journey with all of you and I hope to become stronger every step of the way. It is my pleasure to learn from your answers and experiences to every question and with our professor’s guidance. I am positive that my learning journey will be an engaging and enriching one. I work a lot of long hours every day. I squeezed in my reading every hour to finish the books assigned to us and as I move along I complete my assignments as well. I tend to be hard on myself when it comes to learning which I have acquired since my preschool days so you can just imagine how hard I am now on myself if I am missing anything. But I always tell myself that life and learning are a journey and the challenges are the ones that make me stronger and level-headed. I make an effort to learn every step of the way as I navigate my way through online learning. Of course, passing my classes with good grades is paramount to success and to accomplish that I need to learn effective time management skills. I work a lot of overtime because of financial constraints and family responsibilities that are so important to me. To be successful in my challenges, I follow these guiding principles:

Learn an evidence-based nursing practice to affect healthcare outcomes by providing excellent nursing care through direct and indirect care. My focus is on adult and geriatric populations but I also focus on young pediatrics with congenital heart conditions. I am committed to implementing good nursing judgment in my cardiology area of nursing practice. I am also focused on sustainable cost-effective nursing care plans that can transform healthcare despite the odds of financial and political realities, especially in New York. I would like to become part of the people who can affect change that will strengthen our nursing foundation for future nursing practice and most importantly, be able to contribute to the clinical strengthening of population healthcare outcomes for our nation’s health and future. Thank you.

I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.

Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
