The proposed change in my DNP project is to implement an alternative approach to pain management in hospitalized patients. One applicable change theory is Lippitt’s Change Theory. This theory can be used to introduce
changes that improve quality of care and suggests that there are seven steps in implementing change (Barrow et al., 2021). In relation to the DNP project, the organization is aware that there is a need for alternative strategies in managing patients pain based on patient feedback, increased length of stay, and patient satisfaction questions that relate directly to pain management. The organization uses evidence-based research to determine what change agents may be effective for patient care problems. Hence, there is a lot of evidence that supports alternative approaches to pain management. With this project the frontline staff nurses will be implementing the change. Before this can occur, a detailed plan will be established that specifies the roles and responsibilities of the staff nurses and the goals we expect to accomplish. Once this change is implemented, monitoring pain levels pre and post intervention will help staff see the positive impact of the change. With favorable results staff will see the benefit of implementing an alternative approach for pain management in hospitalized patients. At this point the healthcare organization could consider mass adoption of this change agent.
