NR 542 Wk 3 Nomenclature and Data Concepts SOLUTION
Determine if your organization uses a nursing nomenclature recognized by the American Nurses Association.
Determine if data concepts such as Length of Stay (LOS) are standardized across the organization.
Do these terms clearly and comprehensively represent nursing care and nursing practice at your work setting? Why or why not?
If your work setting does not use a formal nursing nomenclature, apply these questions to the terms that are used.
*Second, consider your database project. Could an ANA-recognized nomenclature be used in your database? Why or why not?*
My database project is CAUTIs (Catheter associated urinary tract infections)
The database questions are
1) what is the unit compliance rate with proper urinary catheter infection?
2) did 2 nurses verify catheter insertion?
3) is there an assessment, implementation, and documentation on foley care and the need for insertion/removal to prevent CAUTIs?
Nomenclature and Data Concepts
Nursing terminologies are important in nursing practice. Nursing terminologies standardize communication of care practices in nursing. They also standardize the capturing, representation, and accessing of health-related data in healthcare organizations. The use of the terminologies enables nurses to discover the practice-based knowledge as well as undertake research to examine the ways in which quality and efficiency in nursing can be achieved. The organization I work with as a registered nurse utilizes nursing terminologies. It uses nomenclature that the American Nurses Association recognizes (Törnvall & Jansson, 2017). The terminologies used are obtained from sources such as NANDA, ICD10, and Perioperative Nursing Data Set. Nurses in the organization use the terminologies in assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care.
My database project focuses on catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). The organization has standardized the capturing of data on CAUTIs. It has also developed protocols for use in the insertion of urinary catheters as well as prevention of CAUTIs in patient care. The hospital collects data based on subjective and objective assessments to determine the compliance rate with the developed protocols for CAUTIs. The reported rate of compliance in the unit is currently at 87%. The rate implies that the compliance is above average in the organization. It also implies the existence of consistent utilization of best practices to ensure the prevention and reduction of CAUTIs in patient care. It is important that the organization explore interventions that can be adopted to increase further the compliance rate with the interventions needed to prevent urinary catheter infection. Interventions such as the provision of training opportunities to the healthcare providers on prevention of CAUTIs should be considered to
improve the compliance rate in the unit (Mack & Stem, 2017).
Correct placement of urinary catheter is important to prevent CAUTIs. Nurses should utilize standardized procedures to ensure the correct placement of the catheters. The two nurses verified catheter insertion. Verification of catheter insertion takes into consideration a number of aspects. One of them is the fact that nurses should ensure urine flow prior to the inflation of the balloon. The inflation should be done using sterile water to the volume that is recommended on the urinary catheter. Nurses should also assess patients for pain. Pain is an indicator that the catheter may not be in the urinary bladder. It is also important to withdraw the catheter once placed until some resistance is felt before attaching the drainage system.
The organization has procedures used for assessment, implementation and documentation of foley catheters and the need for insertion or removal to prevent CAUTIs. Accordingly, nurses are expected to adhere to the guidelines at all the times to ensure consistency in the approaches utilized to prevent CAUTIs in practice. The assessment data must meet specific requirements prior to the determination of the need for catheter insertion. Similarly, nurses have to follow specific indicators in determining the need for the removal of CAUTIs to prevent CAUTIs. The use of the developed protocols has contributed to enhanced safety, quality and efficiency of patient care due to the standardization of processes in the institution (Mack & Stem, 2017). Therefore, it is important to explore additional interventions that can be utilized to achieve further improvements in prevention of CAUTIs in the organization.

It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you.

I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.
Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.
I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
