One of the strategies I implemented when enrolled in previous online learning environments was the ability to combine vision and execution. This skill is conducive to enhancing my ability to plan and time manage in each semester. By merging vision and execution, I can achieve and often surpass the course’s goals and set a coursework schedule that meshes with other obligations such as family and work. Organizing and balancing multiple schedules while also meeting the deadlines of the course have resulted in the completion of my online BSN and MSN degrees.

A strategy I could improve on is the ability to anticipate and mitigate pitfalls. I have previously set ambitious goals for myself and thus far have been able to achieve them due to my strong sense of persistence; however, when I don’t plan for probable pitfalls it usually results in lack of sleep and increased stress. As written by Zangerle (2021), “Many of you work in care settings that never close or are open for the majority of any 24-hour period. This contributes to long hours at work, many of which are scheduled and structured and some that aren’t… it’s those nonstructured hours that can derail your day. She encourages her students to expect the unexpected and learn to manage these derailers of time.”

One recurring example would be knowingly planning time to complete an assignment after a scheduled leadership forum at work. Roughly 50% of these forums result in aggressive action plans for fast-approaching deadlines to resolve organization-wide issues. Despite this probable pitfall, I still schedule the assignment time knowing it will be in addition to another project and create competing priorities. By analyzing my schedules and proactively planning for pitfalls, I can then create mitigation strategies to avoid the negative consequences of these obstacles. A mitigation strategy for the mentioned example would be setting time earlier in the week to complete my assignment versus using my usual weekend days. This response may result in the need for flexing down an hour of work before leadership forum day or getting up an hour earlier to create uninterrupted time.

Blogs help to facilitate a meaningful and somewhat informal classroom environment that fosters dialogue, interaction, and the dissemination of ideas in a functional platform (Kuo et al., 2017). Blogs also serve as way to promote a community and collaborate learning approach through the sharing of ideas. Although they may function like a Discussion Board, the aim is to be more open-ended in nature and somewhat informal in sharing your perspectives and thoughts on a given prompt or idea.

For this first Blog Assignment, reflect on your experiences, either academically or professionally, in which you have employed a given strategy to allow for success that may transfer successfully toward learning online. Think about how this strategy may help to inform your overall approach toward completing an online doctorate degree.

Week 1: Strategies for Successful Online Learning

When I was in online learning environments before, one of my strategies was to be able to combine vision and execution. Each semester, this skill helps me make better plans and make better use of my time. I can meet the goals of the course and often go above and beyond them if I plan and do things at the same time. I can also set up a course schedule that fits in with my other responsibilities, like work and family. I finished my online BSN and MSN degrees because I was able to manage many different schedules and meet course deadlines.
I could work on being able to see problems coming and avoid them. I’ve set myself big goals in the past, and so far, my strong sense of persistence has helped me reach them. But when I don’t plan for problems that might happen, I usually don’t get enough sleep and feel more stressed. Zangerle wrote in 2021, “Many of you work in care settings that never close or are open for most of a 24-hour period.” This makes people work long hours, some of which are planned and scheduled and some of which are not… Your whole day can be thrown off if you don’t have a plan for those hours. She tells her students to expect the unexpected and learn how to deal with these time-wasters.

It’s safe to say that graduate students have tried to plan, manage their time, study, and use technology in the best way possible, with both success and overwhelming feelings of inability and self-doubt. Without these four sets of skills, a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student would fail a lot and put themselves through unnecessary stress. Ng (2015) said that when planning is used, students often turn in their work to be graded earlier than the date they were supposed to. Many people do this to avoid conflicts and delays at the last minute. This shows, without a doubt, how important it is to plan.

While I was getting my master’s degree in nursing leadership and management, I had to do a lot of projects that had to be shown on different types of technology, like video recordings, downloaded software, PowerPoint presentations, and the usual word documents.

I have learned that I still have trouble with this.

I don’t know much about the language of modern technology, which has been a real problem for me when I’ve had to do assignments.

I have come up with a plan to try to make up for this lack of time by planning my studies so that I have time to review and try out the technology before putting the assignment into action.

This didn’t get rid of the frustration, but it did make people feel less worried about it.

In my current job as a care coordination nurse in a primary care setting for the Veterans Administration, I need a strong planning foundation.

The first thing I do every day is open the assignment sheet for everyone in the nursing office.

On these assignment sheets, there is a list of all doctor and nursing appointments for the day, along with the nurse who is in charge of making those appointments happen. There are also times for COVID-19 door screening, COVID-19 vaccination assignments, and surrogate duties for nurses who are covering.

It is very important for a clinic day to go well that these positions are filled and carried out.

After I go over the tasks I’ve been given, I make a plan for the day.

Each day, the care coordination nurse has a lot of personal tasks to complete.

Goals have been set for me to reach by the end of my tour of duty.

All of these responsibilities can be put on hold at any time by an unplanned patient visit or an unplanned clinic need.

If any of these things happen, the rest of the day will have to be changed. Planning has become a very important skill that I want to use in my academic work.

I haven’t tried time management yet, but I think it will help me finish this degree. Time management is often a skill that goes along with planning. During the planning process, I’ll pick a day to look over what I have to do the following week. Then, I’ll set a specific time or “appointment” to work on schoolwork and write down what I want to do during that time. It is also important to set a time to finish schoolwork for the day so that there is time for family, work, and other responsibilities. This will help keep life in balance and reduce stress by giving you clear, stress-free time to study while also taking care of your day-to-day responsibilities.

Module 1: The Foundations of Successful Doctoral Study

Welcome to the first module of Foundations and Essentials for the Doctor of Nursing Practice. The work you complete in this course provides a strong foundation for graduate study at Walden University. Following successful completion of your program, you will be prepared to address the challenges and opportunities to develop and contribute to the science that will lead nursing practice for the future.

How will your role as a scholar-practitioner impact the field of nursing practice? As you engage in the assessments for this course, reflect on how you will be developing your skills as a doctoral student and scholar-practitioner.

What’s Happening This Module?

This course is composed of 5 separate modules covering 11 weeks of content. Each module consists of an overarching topic, and each week within the module includes specific subtopics for learning. As you work through each module, you will have an opportunity to draw upon the knowledge you gain in the assessments and components of learning throughout each of the modules.

Module 1: The Foundations of Successful Doctoral Study is a 3-week module—Weeks 1–3 of the course—in which you will analyze strategies to be successful in the online learning environment and for doctoral study at Walden University. In your Blog for Week 1, you will explore and determine strategies for self-empowerment in academic and professional settings. In Weeks 2–3, you will reflect on your academic and professional goals in relation to Walden University’s vision, mission, and social change outcomes. Organization is a method I employ in both academic and professional settings.
Each semester, I review the course material and schedule and record all deadlines in my planner. This method assists me in numerous ways. First, it helps me visualize the semester’s progression. Instead than wondering each week when my homework is due, I have it all written down.
Second, I can see which weeks may be busier with work or social obligations and better organize my time accordingly. At the start of my MSN program, I was not performing this task. This caused me to feel worried and overwhelmed, since I had little control over my study plan, as I took each week as it came. In addition to planning my semester, I also arrange my employment schedule. I am able to identify the weeks in which I may need to devote more time to tasks and manage my work schedule accordingly. I can also integrate it with my social calendar to schedule events with my family. In the past, I have I did not do this and thus had to cancel plans due to a due assignment.With my organizing abilities, I can prevent these additional sources of stress. Throughout my MSN program, I composed several scientific papers and expressed my opinions through research. However, I believe I can improve upon this during my DNP program Walden University (n.d.) stresses the necessity of expressing your opinion as a writer, as well as “synthesizing the facts from many sources to assist persuade the reader.” I believe I can improve my thoughts by using the knowledge I gather from my research. Reflecting on past works, I would articulate a notion, then back it with a quote from my research. I can elaborate on this in future articles by properly synthesizing the facts. In addition to providing information, synthesis is the use of the knowledge to “present new concepts” (Walden University, n.d.). I will leverage multiple research sources to present a novel concept. As I progress through the DNP program, I will utilize synthesis to enhance my scholarly writing.

A strategy I implement in both academic and professional settings is organization. Each semester, I look at the course syllabus and calendar and write all the due dates down in my planner. This strategy helps me in many ways. First, it helps me visualize the flow of the semester. Instead of wondering each week what assignments are due, I have it all in writing. Secondly, I can see what weeks I may be busier with work or social engagements and plan out my time better. In the beginning of my MSN program, I was not doing this. I was taking each week as it came, and this caused me to become stressed and overwhelmed, feeling that I had no control over my study schedule.

Planning out my semester also helps me plan my work schedule. I can see which weeks I may need to put more time into assignments and can plan my work schedule accordingly. I can also use this with my social calendar when planning events with family and friends. In the past, I have not done this, and have had to cancel plans because I had an important assignment due. With good organizational skills, I can avoid these extra stressors.

Throughout my MSN program, I wrote several scholarly papers and utilized research to express ideas. However, I feel this is something I can improve upon during my DNP program. Walden University (n.d.) emphasizes the importance of stating your opinion as a writer, but also “synthesizing the information from multiple sources to help persuade the reader.” I feel I can improve upon utilizing the information I gain from my research within my ideas. Reflecting on past papers, I would state an idea, followed by a quote from my research to support that idea. In future papers, I can expand upon that by better synthesizing the information. Synthesizing is not only offering information, but also using that information to “present new ideas” (Walden University, n.d.). I will utilize more than one research source to introduce a new idea. As I go through my DNP program, I will use synthesis to improve upon my scholarly writing.
