Regulations of a pollutant of your choice
This assignment addresses the following course outcomes:
Demonstrate awareness of historical events that led to creation of present federal U.S. agencies responsible for environmental regulations and policies.
Use knowledge of environmental regulations to address risks to human health and the environment and advocate for sustainable solutions and practices.
Effectively communicate on national and global environmental issues and policies to persuade, inform, and clarify ideas, information, and procedures to various stakeholders.
Now that you have an overview of environmental policy, legislation, and regulations, we will apply what you have learned to your personal interest of a particular pollutant. Here are the steps for Week 3 Assignment:
Pick a pollutant that you are concerned about. You need to specifically name a chemical or element you are concerned about and write the chemical formula for that element or molecule. If it is an element you should note the forms the element occurs in our environment that would be of greatest concern. (10 points possible).
Investigate a federal regulation concerning this pollutant, and share the essence of that regulation in your own words, preferably in less than 300 words. Please be sure to site the specific section of the act that gave authority to regulate this specific pollutant. (25 points possible).
What federal agency is responsible for that regulation? Explain how you know which agency is responsible for the regulation and the specific purpose of the regulation and its alignment with the purpose of the agency. (10 points possible)
What state or local agency works with that federal agency to administer that regulation? (10 points possible).
How has that regulation been used to affect your life? Be specific about actual occurrence when regulation was used. You might have to call your local regulatory agency to find out the answer to this if you cannot find an article about an event that used this regulation. (20 points possible).
Are there other policy tools that have been used to manage this specific pollutant? If so, what are they? If not, what would you recommend as other policy tools you can use as a thoughtful environmental manager. (15 points possible).
