Statistics is a concept of determining if different entities have a correlation with each other. Ambrose (2018) The history of statistics in nursing dates back to the Florence Nightingale day. Nightingale shaped nursing with the statistical data she gather from the Crimean War, realizing there was a correlation to the number of deaths of soldiers and the environment they are being treated in. (Ambrose, 2018) T The soldiers were suffering from disease processes like gangrene, dysentery and cholera. Based on the information that was gather, the process of cleaning the areas where soldiers were being treated there was a decrease in the numbers of deaths that were seen. According to The University of Texas at Austin (n.d.) “They flushed out sewers, cleaned out overflowing latrines and cesspits, and removed a dead horse that was contaminating the drinking water. With such changes, the mortality rate dropped from 42.7 percent to 2.2 percent over a few months”. Because of Nightingales ability ti find the correlation between disease and unsanitary conditions, she was able to save lives, and a lot of those process are still being used to in healthcare.
