I still believe information literacy and computer literacy are two essential competencies to have a firm grasp of while practicing overall in healthcare—an integrated set of skills that combines critical thinking, research, computer skills, and communication. In addition, the ability to access and use information effectively is essential for success in school, to succeed in the workplace, and to function competently in society. I have learned many valuable tools and information in this class. By taking the TANIC self-assessment, I was able to recognize which areas needed improvement in the area of informatics. One tool I have learned that will assist me in my future role as an advanced practice RN is determining the most appropriate method for accessing information electronically. This will be helpful when I have new clients and I need to gain access to their previous medical records. This will also help in regards to deciding which treatment option is best. Another tool I have learned that will help me in my future role is describing information that is needed through key terms and concepts. This is important in the medical field as there needs to be a certain language spoken amongst medical professionals. It will also be helpful in explaining to other providers any issues or concerns I have in order to gain their professional insights.

My competency from week two has greatly improved as I have expanded my knowledge in the area of nursing informatics. Pretty soon, you may not even have to leave your house as you could probably just send a picture or do a video chat with a provider who can then send an electronic referral or medication. It’s really gotten quite simple. However, with that, patient satisfaction decreases because they are spending less and less quality time with the physician or APRN. Some of the new generation probably like this as it is all they are used to, however, the older generation still want to see their doctor on a regular basis and not have to make a telehealth appointment as most of them have no idea what that even is.

In Week 2, I was still not confident with my technological skills and was still learning how it can be applied in nursing informatics. This week, I was shocked with my overall growth within a month, and I feel more competent in areas I was weak in before, such as being able to identify which printer is linked to the computer and how to troubleshoot it.  I feel I have acquired more knowledge regarding nursing informatics from taking this course and reading the lessons and completing assignments allowed me to better understand the material. I also continued to do research on my own regarding informatics and this also allowed my competencies to build in addition to being able to utilize these skills in my workplace. Having a higher competency in informatics and being able to utilize these skills in my workplace has allowed me to realize even more how much of an impact nursing informatics has in current healthcare and the role we as nurses and future APRNs have in educating our patients. As we improve in nursing informatics, we can become better advocates for our patients and ensure they receive the highest quality of care and improve patient satisfaction. Two competencies I feel will benefit me in my future role as an APRN include computer literacy and clinical information management. According to the lesson plan from week 2, computer literacy allows one to have basic familiarity with computer uses and common applications, the ability to navigate hyperlinks, and the ability to set up and use a database to collect and retrieve information. As a future APRN, I will need to have computer literacy to successfully perform my functions in this new role as I will constantly use the computer to document and review my patients’ EHRs and communicate with other providers. I may also need to gather information from other sources, such as databases to ensure I am implementing current evidence-based practices in my patients’ plan of care. Prior to taking this course, I considered myself to be competent in computers, but as I took this course, I realized I still have so much more to learn, and I realized how much of an impact a lack of computer literacy can influence my patient’s care. This class has allowed me the opportunity to expand on my knowledge and continue to grow in using other applications and utilize my skills. I also feel clinical information management will benefit me as a future APRN as this competency focuses on ways to safeguard and protect my patients and their protected health information (PHI). Throughout this course, I have acquired more knowledge in informatics overall, but I also feel there is so much more for me to learn and improve on.   • The ability to find information stored in the Health Information System (HIS) to guide patient care (guidelines, standardised plans of care, protocols etc)
  • Evaluate information and its sources critically and incorporates selected information into his/her knowledge base and value system.

The Health Information System (HIS) is our new filing cabinet and so, especially in an emergency situation, it is critical that healthcare providers are competent in knowing where to find stored patient information. I use EPIC a lot. There are so many different areas to find the same patient information. Although we may move to a different window, certain patient data such as allergies and code status remain prominent on the user interface. Therefore, no provider should be administering penicillin to a patient who is allergic to this drug or carrying out CPR on a patient with a Do Not Resuscitate code status.
