Advanced Directives
Advanced directives refer to the legal documents that enable an individual to spell out their decisions concerning the end-of-life care ahead of time. Advanced directives give a person or an individual ways to tell or give wishes to their families, healthcare professionals, and friends and to avoid confusion later on. In most cases, health crises often become unpredictable. Nursing professionals play roles in promoting and advancing directives that increasingly become essential or necessary (Lack et al., 2014). Today, according to the healthcare data, there is an increase in the aging population. Also, there are people who are living longer and they tend to seek healthcare services alone. Therefore, it is necessary for nurses to understand the nature and history of the advanced healthcare directives to assist patients in making informed decisions before the crisis. One of the major milestone in the history of advanced directives have ensued from the cases of healthy and young people in their twenties.
How Advanced Directives Relates to the Resident Bill of Rights
In the healthcare system, advanced directives directly relates to the client or Resident Bill of Rights. In most cases, patients have the absolute rights to spell out their advanced directives including healthcare proxy, living well, or the unending power of an attorney concerning the designation of a surrogate decision-maker and treatment and to anticipate that the healthcare facility or a hospital will comply with the directives and permitted by the healthcare policies and the law (Greutmann & Tobler, 2019). Advanced directives enforce the policies stipulated under the Residential Bill of Rights, which, to a greater extent, give the patients all the rights to make a decision that is good for them. Nurses or medical professionals in collaboration with the healthcare institutions ought to advice patients on their rights under the state laws and the hospital policies to ensure achievement of informed medical choices. All the caregiver must ask if the patient have advanced directives, and the information obtained ought to be included in the patient’s information records.
Nurse’s Role in supporting and writing Advanced Directives
Nurses have the advanced roles in writing and supporting the advanced directives. They need to persuade the patients for advanced information and also protect personal information. Nurses facilitate the processes of advanced directives through the provision of education, promotion of the exploration and identification of values, as well as documenting client’s expressed needs (Atkinson, 2017). Nurses also have a role in educating the patients the laws that guide the advanced directives and how to implement them. Nurses also have a role in helping out patients to fulfil various requirement in the advanced directive program.
Decision-making Processes Used to Finalize Advanced Directives
The decision-making processes used to finalize my advanced directives included consultation with the family members and the nursing professionals. I considered my wishes and how they can be implemented. Also, I considered my state of health and how the treatment needs to be conducted in case I become unconscious. In the decision-making processes, I consulted the nurses, attorney and the family members on various important issues that need to be included or incorporated. Completing advanced directives is an essential process that is part of the Resident Bills of Rights (Dewey et al., 2019). Some of the challenges encountered while making decisions on the advanced directives include miscommunication among the individuals being consulted as well as the unwillingness of the nurses to give advanced and elaborate information.
