The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) describes a clinical nurse leader (CNL) as a masters-prepared nurse equipped with knowledge and skills to provide health care across the continuum in any setting. The AACN introduced the CNL role in partnership with healthcare practice and education leaders to address the increasing need to enhance patient care outcomes. This paper seeks to discuss the scope of my future role as a CNL, professional organizations most influential in advancing the scope and influence of advanced nursing, and a controversial or evolving concern that might affect my scope of practice or role in the coming years.

Scope of My Future Role as an Advanced Registered Nurse

A CNL takes the role of a leader in healthcare delivery systems in which patient care is provided. Unlike the scope of APRNs, the scope of practice for CNLs is restricted in the aspects of the clinical duties in direct patient care. The AACN defines the scope of the CNL as being a clinical leader at the point of patient care (King et al., 2020). The CNL scope entails various aspects of patient care, including care coordination, transitions of care, outcomes measurement, team leadership, interprofessional communication, risk assessment, implementation of best intervention based on evidence, and quality improvement (King et al., 2020). Furthermore, it’s the role of the CNL to link direct nursing care with the modern, multifaceted, data-driven healthcare delivery systems. The CNL addresses the patients’ needs while transforming care practices to improve the care provided to all patients. The scope of practice for CNLs further entails taking part in collaborative care for patients by being part of the interprofessional healthcare teams. The CNLs head the interprofessional team, and their duties entail planning, organizing, and communicating patient care with members of the team (Bender, 2016). Besides, the CNL supervises the care provided by the team and delegates duties pertaining to patient care within the patient care team (Bender, 2016). The CNL scope also includes supervising direct nursing care in the units and evaluating nursing care plans, potential risks, and patient outcomes.

Regulatory, Certification, or Accreditation Agencies That Define CNL Scope

The AACN defines the scope of CNL and is also involved in the certification of CNLs. The AACN is mandated to develop competencies and curriculum expectations for the CNL education program and practice and defining the scope of practice for CNLs (AACN, 2019). Upon completing the CNL program, the student is eligible for a CNL certification exam, which is mandatory to become a certified CNL (King et al., 2020). The Commission on Nurse Certification (CNC), a division of the AACN, is mandated to oversee the CNL certification program. The program is managed by the CNC Board of Commissioners.

Three Professional Nursing Organizations Identified as the Most Influential in Advancing the Scope and Influence of Advanced Nursing

The AACN is a professional nursing organization established to provide baccalaureate-prepared and higher-degree nursing education the unique attention and nurturing they require. AACN is the most influential organization in influencing and advancing the scope of advanced registered nurses. It is regarded as the national voice for academic nursing (AACN, 2019). It focuses on setting quality standards for nursing education and guides institutions in implementing the standards. Besides, the AACN impacts the nursing profession to improve patient care and supports professional nursing education, research, and practice (AACN, 2019). Furthermore, AACN offers Professional Development Programs, which enable members to advance their profession and careers as academic nursing leaders. It also allows nurse educators to develop professionally through faculty development programs and remain at the forefront of nursing education.

The American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL) is a professional nursing organization for CNLs that is influential in advancing the scope and influence of CNLs. The AONL is regarded as the voice of nursing leadership in the U.S. AONL focuses on promoting nurse leaders’ professional development using education opportunities, innovative and competency-based learning opportunities (AONL, 2019). For instance, it provides online and individual learning programs to healthcare leaders, such as executives, directors, CNLs, and managers. The programs address shared governance, health care finance, certification review, and emerging leader competencies (AONL, 2019). Furthermore, AONL fosters positive change using a common voice to inspire transformation in health care. It also makes sure that the CNLs’ opinions and needs are heard and taken into consideration during public policy on nursing and patient care.

The American Nurses Association (ANA) is also very influential in advancing the scope and influence of advanced nursing. ANA was established in 1896, having members from all 50 states (ANA, 2020). It is at the front position of enhancing the quality of health care for all US citizens. ANA is regarded as the strongest voice for the nursing profession and represents the interests of about 4 million registered nurses in the US. ANA focuses on advancing the nursing profession by promoting high standards of nursing practice and a safe and ethical work environment (ANA, 2020). Besides, it supports nurses’ health and wellness and advocates on health care issues that affect nurses and the general public. In addition to advocating issues that directly impact the nursing profession, ANA has a bold position on issues crucial to its members (ANA, 2020). For instance, it has taken firm stances on various issues, including Medicare reform, safe nursing ratios, workplace violence, and adequate reimbursement for health care services.

Professional Organization That Is Most Appealing

The most appealing professional organization from the three organizations is the AONL. Joining the AONL will be an investment in my career since members enjoy the benefits of accessing tangible resources and connections, which allow them to work effectively and efficiently (AONL, 2019). AONL’s mission is to reform health care through innovation and expert nursing leadership (AONL, 2019). My worldview and philosophy of care are leading change and improving health care for all, promoting a safe nursing practice, protecting patients’ health and welfare, and promoting a safe and ethical work environment. The AONL’s mission aligns with my worldview since innovation in nursing practice can improve patient care delivery and improve patients’ safety and health outcomes. Joining AONL will be essential to help me land on the right path and achieve my career goals. Furthermore, since CNLs are the leaders of interprofessional teams, I can lead and influence other providers to research and create innovative ways of improving healthcare delivery and improving patients’ outcomes. Being a member of AONL will help me network with other CNLs as it creates a networking platform where CNLs interact and share their diverse views and embrace new ideas.

Controversial or Evolving Issue That Is Likely To Affect the CNL Scope of Practice

Evidence-based management (EBM) is an evolving issue that is most likely to affect my scope of practice as a CNL. EBM is an evolving practice among healthcare leaders and is much more promising among nurse leaders (Majers & Warshawsky, 2020). EBM has its origin in evidence-based nursing practice (EBP), which has developed to reflect the use of the best scientific evidence in addition to nurse’s professional judgment, clinical expertise, and the patient’s preferences. Similar to EBP, EBM decision-making entails an organized application of the best available scientific evidence in addition to organizational evidence, leaders’ professional experience, and stakeholder evidence to decision-making (Majers & Warshawsky, 2020). Nurse leaders have been termed as one of the current determinants in adopting EBP. CNLs that create a vision and a culture to support EBP become more successful in accomplishing quality patient outcomes.

EBM is likely to influence nursing practice and other stakeholders since CNLs will be required to apply EBM decision-making to access data and stakeholder information and evaluate the nursing practice environment. CNLs will be able to identify opportunities to enhance the nurse practice environment by evaluating a large evidence base of interventions to develop healthy work environments (Majers & Warshawsky, 2020). Furthermore, CNLs will be required to build on their knowledge of EBP to create a broader use of evidence in their management decision-making. Consequently, CNL will have to develop EBM practice competencies through continuous education programs (Majers & Warshawsky, 2020). This will enable them to increase their knowledge of EBP and apply it in management and leadership decision-making. EBM matters to the advanced registered nurse because they can apply it to create a culture of inquiry that uses the best available evidence (Majers & Warshawsky, 2020). As a result, advanced registered nurses can promote successful outcomes that support the healthcare environment, organizational success, and health care outcomes.

Conclusion

CNLs are advanced registered nurses equipped with advanced nursing knowledge but do not meet APRNs’ scope of practice. The scope of CNLs is limited to direct patient care. It entails facilitating collaborative patient care, overseeing the interprofessional team’s care, evaluating patient risks, outcomes, and care plans, coordinating direct care activities by nurses, and providing lateral integration of healthcare services. The scope of CNLs is defined by the AACN, which also provides certification exams. Professional nursing organizations that are most influential in advancing the scope and influence of advanced nursing include the AACN, AONL, and ANA. The organizations act as the voice for nurse leaders and provide opportunities for professional development and networking. An evolving issue that might affect my scope in the future is the use of EBM since CNLs will be required to apply evidence to inform management decisions. CNLs can make evidence-based decisions to select the most appropriate interventions to improve the work environment and include them in the organizational strategic plan.

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. The scope of practice in nursing enables nurses to be well-versed with the procedures and processes the nurse is allowed to perform. It also defines the services that a qualified nursing professional is considered competent to undertake and allowed to perform based on their professional nursing license (Christensen & Simmons, 2019). A nurse’s scope of practice is based on specific education, skills, and competence. Advanced practice nurses must be allowed to practice to the full level of their education and abilities to provide efficient, high-quality patient care. This paper will describe the scope of my future nursing role; discuss professional organizations influencing advanced nursing, and an evolving topic that might impact the scope of practice.

The Scope of Future Role

The scope of the nurse educator extends to the education and health care settings.  Nurse educators work in diverse settings, including hospitals, universities, nursing schools, home care agencies, community colleges, and nursing homes. Nurse educators are expected to utilize their clinical nursing knowledge, skills, and experience in developing a nursing education program curriculum (Fitzgerald et al., 2020). Their scope of practice allows them to develop the courses and content that will be used in the curriculum and assess the outcomes of the education curriculum. The scope of nurse educators in the nursing education environment includes promoting learning and facilitating the development and socialization of nursing students (Fitzgerald et al., 2020). Besides, they engage nursing students and enable them to function within the education setting. Nurse educators prepare nursing students to transition out of academia to nursing practice successfully.

The scope of nurse educators in the clinical setting involves empowering nurses to succeed in the nursing profession. They help new nurses to thrive by empowering them with knowledge and skills in their journey to becoming novice nurses (Christensen & Simmons, 2019). In addition, they review nursing professionals to identify educational gaps and needs and guide the implementation of staff development programs. The scope allows them to develop, execute, and evaluate nurses’ continuing education programs at every level (Christensen & Simmons, 2019). Nurse educators work with nurse supervisors and bedside nurses to develop goals for clinical improvement and attain their educational objectives.

Regulatory, Certification, Or Accreditation Agencies That Define the Scope

MSN-nurse educator programs are certified by the National League for Nursing (NLN). A student, who has finished the nurse educator program, must have an NLN certification to become a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) (Fitzgerald et al., 2020). NLN develops the scope of practice for CNEs. It also fosters the application of the outlined core competencies for CNEs in the implementation of nursing education (Fitzgerald et al., 2020). The core competencies further describe the scope of practice for CNEs and are used as a framework for designing nursing curriculums.

Professional Nursing Organizations

The National League for Nursing (NLN) is a professional organization for nurse educators committed to excellence in nursing. NLN’s mission is to foster excellence in nursing education to form a strong and diverse nursing workforce to promote the health of the country and the global community (NLN, 2020). Members are involved in implementing nursing education programs in health care organizations, higher education, and agencies. NLN is influential in fostering the scope and influence of nursing educators by offering them opportunities for professional development (NLN, 2020). Members benefit from teaching resources, research grants, evaluation services, and initiatives for public policy.  NLN advances the scope and influence of CNEs through certification programs for nurse educators, networking opportunities, and public policy initiatives (NLN, 2020). Members’ benefits include continuous education, professional development, and networking opportunities. These opportunities seek to enable nurses to implement nursing education programs in complex educational and health care settings.

American Nurses Association (ANA) also plays a major role in fostering the scope and influence of advanced nursing. ANA represents the interests of registered nurses in the U.S. It also takes a leading role in enhancing the health care quality for all populations (ANA, 2021). ANA leads the nursing profession to mold its future of nursing and health care. ANA advances the scope and influences of advanced nursing by advancing standards of nursing practice (ANA, 2021). It champions issues in health care affecting nurses and the populations they serve (ANA, 2021). Besides, ANA has advocated for healthcare issues such as safe nurse staffing rations, Medicare reform, violence in the workplace, protection of health care providers, and insurance reimbursement. ANA provides its members with resources for career development.

AACN is considered the voice for academic nursing nationally (AACN, 2021). It seeks to develop quality standards for nursing education and guide training facilities in executing the standards. It fosters the scope of advanced nursing by influencing the nursing profession to enhance health care. Besides, it influences advanced nursing by fostering public support for nursing education, practice, and research. The AACN provides its members with seven leadership networks for faculty in nursing schools and professionals involved in research, instructional development, faculty practice, organizational leadership, business operations, recruitment of graduate students, and communication (AACN, 2021)s. AACN promotes the scope of advanced nursing by connecting its members with visionary leaders in academic nursing, networking them with other professionals in the same field through Leadership Networks, and addressing upcoming issues in academic nursing.

Organization That I Would Most Like To Join

NLN is the professional organization I am likely to join as I transition to an advanced nursing role. It is an appealing organization since it serves nurse educators and might help me advance my career in nursing education. It would help advance my career when working in the classroom or clinical setting since it represents members’ interests in both environments (NLN, 2020). NLN’s mission is to foster excellence in nursing education to form a strong and diverse nursing workforce to promote health in the country and the global community (NLN, 2020). My worldview recognizes high-quality nursing education as a key factor in delivering quality health care. The mission of NLN aligns with my worldview since it seeks to better nursing education to promote better in various populations.  Excellence in nursing education results in a well-equipped nursing workforce, which promotes excellent nursing care.

Joining NLN would improve my practice as a nursing educator through its professional development opportunities for nurse educators. Besides, it champions equity and acknowledgment of the role of CNEs in advanced nursing practice, which would advance my nursing career. NLN provides its members with teaching resources, which I can use to better my practice in the classroom and clinical settings. In addition, NLN can improve my practice by taking advantage of its opportunities for professional development. Furthermore, NLN offers its members scholarship opportunities, which I can apply to improve my knowledge and skills in nursing education.

An Evolving Issue Most Likely to Impact Scope of Practice or Role

Technology is an evolving issue that might influence the scope of practice or role as a CNE in the coming years.  Technology in nursing education involves applying advanced technology models to streamline the educational journey (Fawaz et al., 2018). It integrates web-based education in face-to-face classes and internet-uploaded classes. It also incorporates internet-hosted material, electronic references, computer access, and broadband internet services (Fawaz et al., 2018). Technology will influence my future role as a CNE since I will be expected to utilize appropriate technologies when providing nursing education. Nurses are the backbone of healthcare. Thus, they must be trained to apply technology to deliver holistic nursing care to patients (Fawaz et al., 2018). Advancements in technology will affect my role in developing curriculum for nursing education programs. The CNE will be required to integrate information technology into the nursing curriculum to equip students with the appropriate education and skills to meet the demands of the modern healthcare industry.

Technology will impact the nursing profession and other internal stakeholders since professionals must be well-versed with healthcare technology advancements. Nurses and other providers might require continuous development programs in information technology to ensure they are up-to-date with the current technologies (Singh & Masango, 2020). In addition, it will influence the development of the nursing informatics specialty, which seeks to integrate information science, computer science, and nursing science (Singh & Masango, 2020).  Furthermore, nurses will be expected to design technology systems that will improve health care delivery and patient care efficiencies.

Technology matters to the advanced registered nurse since they will have to integrate the ever-evolving health technologies into their nursing practice.  When addressing patients’ needs, advanced registered nurses will be required to use electronic medical records, telemedicine, and wearable devices to improve health outcomes (Singh & Masango, 2020). Besides, they will be required to use technology to improve communication among themselves and with patients and streamline care coordination.

Conclusion

Nurse educators work in both clinical and classroom settings.  They facilitate the implementation of nursing education programs and review learning outcomes. CNEs design nursing curriculum and evaluate the outcomes of nursing programs. Besides, they are involved in continuous quality improvement education programs in clinical settings to update nurses’ clinical knowledge and skills. Professional organizations that strengthen the scope and influence of advanced nursing include the National League for NLN, ANA, and AACN. NLN is the most suitable for nurse educators and seeks to develop quality standards for nursing education. Technology will influence my CNE role since I will be required to train nursing students and practice nurses on using technology in nursing practice.

As a labor and delivery nurse our unit policies for the operating room also follow AORN guidelines. We utilize their educational and training platforms at my facility to ensure that we use best practice and provide safe care for all patients during their cesarean sections.

 

I really liked how you connected the three organizations to to state legislation in your state. Researching state legislation was new to me and I found it very informative and plan to continue to become more educated in not only nursing organizations but state legislation.
