Abstract:
Background: The majority of children experience pain in hospitals, and their parents are dissatisfied with how well pain is managed. Involving patients and families in the development and evaluation of pain treatment plans may improve pain management perceptions and hospital experiences.
The goal of this performance improvement project was to engage patients and families in addressing the pain of hospitalized pediatric patients using interactive patient care technology. The goal was to get patients, parents, and health care teams talking about their pain management expectations and perceptions of treatment plan effectiveness.
Methods:
The Plan-Do-Study-Act methodology was used to design, develop, test, and pilot new workflows for integrating the interactive patient care technology system with the automated medication dispensing system and documenting actions from both systems in the electronic health record.
Setting: Because of the high prevalence of pain from surgeries and hematologic and oncologic diseases, treatments, and invasive procedures, the pediatric surgical unit and hematology/oncology unit of a free-standing, university-affiliated, urban children’s hospital were chosen to pilot this performance improvement project.
The documentation of pain assessments, nonpharmacologic interventions, and treatment effectiveness has increased. From fiscal year 2014 to fiscal year 2016, the proportion of positive family satisfaction responses for pain management increased significantly (p =.006).
Conclusion: By utilizing interactive patient care technologies, patients and families were encouraged to participate actively in pain treatment plans and treatment outcome evaluation. Active communication and partnership with patients and families can effectively change organizational culture to be more sensitive to patients’ pain and hospital experiences.

Education can fall on the nurse in helping the patient learn about new technological advancements. Baum and Bauer (2021) discussed the two-way communication with patients and clinicians as well as clinician to clinician is essential to obtaining and giving precise medical advice in a timely manner. Communication is essential in every aspect of healthcare and portals have allowed patients more access to their medical professionals. Communication gives patients more control over their own care and they have the ability to add a caregiver to their portal chart access if wanted but there are adversaries who will argue about privacy violations and patients getting bad information (Baum & Bauer, 2021). In all reality, this situation is a win-win for all involved. Dykes et al. (2017) pointed out that the portals can hold lots of information like test results, referrals, diagnoses, medications, and appointments as well as tips for self-management of symptoms and tools to educate patients on their diagnoses and medications. With these advancements and more to come, patient involvement in their health care should continue to get better and better.

My healthcare organization has heavily embarked on using technology in managing and distributing information.

Various trends are being adopted in healthcare facilities and the healthcare sector at large. Telehealth is among the most compelling discoveries in healthcare provision. It allows healthcare services provided remotely through the telephone or video to advance effectiveness and patient access to healthcare (Patti & Denise, 2019). The computerization of healthcare information is significant in fostering communication amongst healthcare providers and patients. Online healthcare portals, text messaging, and emails are technologies that can be considered in communication management. Similarly, these technological discoveries are being applied in the treatment and management of some comorbidities. According to Alotaibi & Federico (2017), it is easier to test for diseases and manage them, hence improving overall patients’ health through the invention of modern laboratory equipment.

The technological trends incorporated in the healthcare practicum are subject to some limitations. Technology is a human invention that is understood to be subject to breakdown and errors where at times, it threatens patients’ safety. Cybersecurity also risks applying technology in healthcare provision affecting some practices such as payment methods and enormous data volumes.

I opine so since the practice allows for easy treatment and monitoring of patients from their respective localities.
Moreover, telehealth technology allows for the management of severe conditions where monitoring is also simplified. The technology shall improve patients’ overall outcomes since simplified management and monitoring of patient’s mechanisms effectively makes healthcare provision easier and prolongs mortality (Carroll, 2018). The methodology is also efficient in data management since every patient is provided with their account where communication with a physician occurs. Technology incorporation in health care is an excellent stride towards attaining a universal healthcare reach; therefore, it is significant.
