Walden University Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?– Step-By-Step Guide

This guide will demonstrate how to complete the Walden University  Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?  assignment based on general principles of academic writing. Here, we will show you the A, B, Cs of completing an academic paper, irrespective of the instructions. After guiding you through what to do, the guide will leave one or two sample essays at the end to highlight the various sections discussed below.

How to Research and Prepare for Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?

Whether one passes or fails an academic assignment such as the Walden University  Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice? depends on the preparation done beforehand. The first thing to do once you receive an assignment is to quickly skim through the requirements. Once that is done, start going through the instructions one by one to clearly understand what the instructor wants. The most important thing here is to understand the required format—whether it is APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.

After understanding the requirements of the paper, the next phase is to gather relevant materials. The first place to start the research process is the weekly resources. Go through the resources provided in the instructions to determine which ones fit the assignment. After reviewing the provided resources, use the university library to search for additional resources. After gathering sufficient and necessary resources, you are now ready to start drafting your paper.

How to Write the Introduction for  Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?

The introduction for the Walden University  Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice? is where you tell the instructor what your paper will encompass. In three to four statements, highlight the important points that will form the basis of your paper. Here, you can include statistics to show the importance of the topic you will be discussing. At the end of the introduction, write a clear purpose statement outlining what exactly will be contained in the paper. This statement will start with “The purpose of this paper…” and then proceed to outline the various sections of the instructions.

How to Write the Body for  Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?

After the introduction, move into the main part of the  Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?  assignment, which is the body. Given that the paper you will be writing is not experimental, the way you organize the headings and subheadings of your paper is critically important. In some cases, you might have to use more subheadings to properly organize the assignment. The organization will depend on the rubric provided. Carefully examine the rubric, as it will contain all the detailed requirements of the assignment. Sometimes, the rubric will have information that the normal instructions lack.

Another important factor to consider at this point is how to do citations. In-text citations are fundamental as they support the arguments and points you make in the paper. At this point, the resources gathered at the beginning will come in handy. Integrating the ideas of the authors with your own will ensure that you produce a comprehensive paper. Also, follow the given citation format. In most cases, APA 7 is the preferred format for nursing assignments.

How to Write the Conclusion for  Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?

After completing the main sections, write the conclusion of your paper. The conclusion is a summary of the main points you made in your paper. However, you need to rewrite the points and not simply copy and paste them. By restating the points from each subheading, you will provide a nuanced overview of the assignment to the reader.

How to Format the References List for  Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?

The very last part of your paper involves listing the sources used in your paper. These sources should be listed in alphabetical order and double-spaced. Additionally, use a hanging indent for each source that appears in this list. Lastly, only the sources cited within the body of the paper should appear here.

The Joint Commission

Implementation and application of EBP in health practice improve care delivery, patient results, and healthcare quality (Laureate Education, 2018). EBP is an approach to problem-solving that entails utilizing the best evidence and practice in healthcare delivery. It has helped reduce healthcare costs as well as burnout among nurses (Melnyk et al., 2018). EBP allows nurses to apply the best proofs and practices in healthcare, contributing to positive health outcomes. It has been embraced by hospitals, healthcare practitioners, and health organizations across the globe, such as national initiatives, accreditation bodies, and reimbursement. Thus, this assignment reviews The Joint Commission.

The Joint Commission is an accrediting body and organization that is based on making a profit. It is an independent, largest, and oldest standard-setting organization. It is also an accrediting body and surveys health organizations via chat review, patients and staff interviews to determine whether care provisions of an organization meet particular standards. According to The Joint Commission (2021a), these standards stress quality care, patient safety more and are updated often intending to match changes and advances in medicine and healthcare. They are deeply rooted in EBP. This organization is dedicated to excellence via Evidence-Based Practice that is found on the entire website. Its standards are established by expert consensus and scientific research mainly reviewed by the Board commission, but all articles and research done on this website are not cited. This website describes study research researched and published by CDC and other scholarly and peer-reviewed study research organizations.

In The Joint Commission, works are rooted in EBP as evidenced through provisions of rationale in National Patient Safety Goals. Each goal includes evidence-based rationale. Every single format for recognizing practice goals is accompanied by rationale, and it provides a chance for accreditation. After reviewing the Joint Commission, I realized that emphasis on minutia aims to recognize the aspects or areas that need improvement or even validation of staff’s exceptional practices. I have also understood the importance of supporting these standards formulated by a Joint Commission review (The Joint Commission, 2021b). This website also offers an extensive description of the rationale. The information provided on this website concerning the Joint Commission has changed my perception of the importance of accreditation as they explain adherence to set standards by health facilities. Most importantly, these standards ensure there is an enhancement of patient safety in health facilities and organizations.

Sample Answer 3 for Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?

Researching healthcare organizations, I came across the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2021a) that explains the purpose of the organization and listed in the description within the mission statement; “CDC is the nation’s leading science-based, data-driven, a service organization that protects the public’s health” (para 2).  The words do not precisely state evidence-based practice, but Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt (2018) describe the evidence-based practice as having the ability to enhance healthcare quality, improve patient outcomes, decrease the overall cost of healthcare, and empower doctors. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2021b) framework and priorities section expresses the end goal for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as protecting the United States’ safety. Again, in the passage of the CDC’s framework and priorities, the CDC mentions having access to data, analytics, eliminating disease, and ending epidemics. On the CDC website, there is a magnifying glass where keywords can be searched throughout the database of the CDC website.

Examples of topics with the word “evidence-based practice” include preventing opioids, health system resources, evidence-based practice for cancer screening, and many more. Multiple searches and topics pertain to evidence-based practice within the CDC confirm that the CDC is indeed grounded in evidence-based practice. To ensure this, when further investigating one of the topics mentioned above, one of the tabs within the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2018) has a forty-page document that contains evidence-based practices of preventing opioid overdoses in the United States. Learning about the information provided by the CDC further proves that the CDC is using all forms of studies, data, technology, and approaches to identify ways to battle and overcome illnesses, diseases, and pandemics. The exact words for “evidence-based practice” do not appear in the mission statement. However, the fundamental repetitive description of world-class scientific data and analytics that the CDC has access to to provide safety to the United States from diseases, illnesses, and pandemics does not mean the CDC is not deeply rooted in the evidence-based practice world. The confirmation of the evidence-based practice use is seen in almost every topic searched on the CDC website, further proving the use of the evidence-based practice in their studies and information.

Sample Answer 4 for Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?

Description of the National Institutes of Health

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is one of the world’s leading medical research centers and serves as the primary source for health research on the federal level (NIH, 2015). The NIH aims to protect and improve health, prevent disease, expand medical and scientific knowledge, and continuously promote the highest level of scientific integrity (NIH, 2015). The NIH provides leadership and direction for programs that are intended to improve the health of the nation and support continued scientific research (NIH, 2015). Within the NIH, there are many NIH institutes that have a more specific focus. The NIH institutes include the National Cancer Institute, National Eye Institute, National Institute on Aging, etc. (NIH, 2018). The NIH website offers endless resources for health care professionals and laymen.

The NIH and Evidence-Based Practice

When exploring the NIH website, evidence-based practice can be seen around every corner. The NIH home page immediately introduces evidence-based information regarding COVID-19. Traveling to the “About NIH” section reveals and explanation of how the NIH has dramatically improved the health of the American people. The website states that NIH-funded research has resulted in an increased average life span, a significant reduction in cancer diagnosis and death, and a drastic reduction in disability rates (NIH, n.d.). The NIH mission statement is to, “seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability” (NIH, 2017). This mission statement is clearly founded in evidence-based practice and research. The NIH website shows that the NIH is founded in evidence-based practice along with innovation and cultivating new knowledge by cultivating world-class scientists.

Perception of the NIH

My perception of the NIH did not change when exploring the website. Throughout my time as a health care professional and student, I have spent a significant amount of time on the NIH website and relied on the NIH for high-quality and reliable information. Throughout the course of the pandemic, the NIH has struggled to have a positive perception with the public. The NIH states that they will continue to be a credible source of scientific and health information (NIH, 2018). Additionally, the NIH states that it is their goal to share strategies and best practices with the public so that the public can have a better understanding of research that is being done and its importance in terms of health (NIH, 2018).

Sample Answer 5 for Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?

The American Nurses Association (ANA) is the premier organization representing the interests of the nation’s 4 million registered nurses. It was founded in 1896, and at the forefront of improving health care quality for all, and the most influential voice for the profession (ANA, n. d.). Evidence-based practice (EBP), as described by the American Nurses Association (2017), is a problem-solving model for the delivery of quality patient, family, community care that focuses on improving patient outcomes, reducing costs, and providing empowerment for healthcare providers (Melynyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019).

ANA exists to advance the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting a safe and ethical work environment, bolstering the health and wellness of nurses, and advocating on health care issues that affect nurses and the public (ANA, n. d.). This organization, EBP, is highly adapted.A good example is the organization’s advocacy for a safe nurse-patient ratio. Safe nurse staffing is a critical issue for patient safety and the quality of care in hospitals, communities, and all settings in which care is provided. Inadequate or insufficient nurse staffing levels increase the risk of care being compromised, adverse events for patients, inferior clinical outcomes, in-patient death in hospitals, and more terrible patient experience of care (ICN, 2018).

The organization does not only guide the profession on issues of nursing practice, health policy, and social concerns that impact patient wellbeing as previously perceived but its work is also supported by the principles which provide direction to nurses and set out the framework for evaluating nursing excellence (ANA, n. d.).    The information provided on their website represents the interests of all registered nurses. An example is addressing the complexities of health care delivery. In line with this, ANA has developed a Research Toolkit to help provide evidence-based care that promotes quality health outcomes for individuals, families, communities, and health care systems.

The information on the website has not changed my perception of the organization, as I have used the website many times for information , continuous education and research purposes.

Sample Answer 6 for Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?

For this Discussion, I have chosen the World Health Organization’s website. Since its founding in 1948, the World Health Organization (WHO) has served as the United Nations body connecting nations and coordinating worldwide efforts to establish universal health coverage. They are in charge of directing and coordinating the global response to health emergencies (About WHO, 2021).

Evidence-Based Practice is elaborated in the WHO’s Website’s Brochure section. In a statement on the World Health Organization’s website, it is stated that the organization has gathered together the world’s leading health professionals to develop worldwide reference materials and make recommendations to improve the health of people all over the world. The World Health Organization’s Global Health Observatory stores and disseminates data collected from countries around the globe. This powerful tool assists countries in gaining a clear picture of who is falling ill, from which disease, and where, allowing efforts to be directed to the most in need of assistance. The ability to collect and analyze data has been critical to the World Health Organization’s work to improve health throughout the life-course – from before birth to the final years of one’s existence (WHO Brochure, 2021 ).

The World Health Organization is grounded on Evidence-Based Practice.Through its work Globally, Since 1950, life expectancy has increased by 25 years. Smallpox has been eradicated, and polio is on the threshold of eradication, with 6 million fewer children dying before reaching their fifth birthday in 2016 than in 1990. Measles, malaria, and severe tropical diseases like dracunculiasis (guinea worm) and lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis), as well as HIV and syphilis transmission from mother to child, have all been eradicated in several nations (WHO Brochure, 2021 ).

I have always been aware of how important the World Health Organizations’ role in the improvement of the Health of the Global Population.  Going through their website, I have learned a great deal of knowledge of their work worldwide and their focus on expanding universal health coverage. The Covid 19 Pandemic has also shown us the importance of having a global body, such as the World Health Organization. The WHO brings together the world’s scientists and international health professionals to accelerate the research and development process and develop new norms and standards to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic and help care for those affected.

Sample Answer 7 for Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?

Your post was very informative.  Evidenced Based practice is evident in the Affordable care Act of 2010 (ACA) in the reimbursement rates for patient outcomes and reduced hospitalization rates for certain conditions (Department of Health and Human Services, 2017).  Evidence has proven thus far that people are more concerned with the value of care versus the quantity of care provided.  According to Standford health care (2021, para 3), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) ” will gradually shift incentives and payments away from rewarding volume of services to rewarding value”.  However, I feel that evidence will also prove that while there are some benefits to this reimbursement method, they will have to develop a better way that won’t penalize a provider for actually doing their job.

For example,  a person who has a mental health condition but also has a blood pressure issue as well, may be  prescribed all the meds (mental health and BP meds),  services, and referrals to promote healthy and good outcomes. However, if a patient is not compliant with medications due to their mental health issues, and ends up in the hospital in a hypertensive emergency, that is something the primary care provider cannot control.  Another example is that  the patient could have a mental health issue to cause them to be very paranoid, and despite getting great care, when follow calls or emails regarding ssatisfaction surveys are conducted, they could give the provider a bad rating simply because they are paranoid that the provider may be trying to harm them with the meds they prescribed.  It seems a bit unfair to not reimburse a facility because the person went to the hospital but it was something that they could have prevented.  For patients who are compliant, this reimbursement process may be effective.  According to Dictionary.com (2021), evidence is “that which can be proved or disproved” and I  believe that the the above mentioned barriers to reimbursement and the scenario in which the patient is compliant and involved in their care are both evidence/supporting facts that both disprove and prove that failures and benefits of this reimbursement system.  I wonder if the emergency psychiatric service department at Calvert Health Medical Center has ever experienced this, and if so, how do they handle situations where they may not be reimbursed and it is through no fault of their own?

Sample Answer 8 for Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?

I thought this was a fantastic choice to investigate for Evidence Based Practice.  The World Health Organization (WHO) is the pillar of global health.  As stated on their website, they work “worldwide to promote health, keep the world safe, and serve the vulnerable” by addressing various issues that affect the global population such as noncommunicable disease prevention, antimicrobial resistance, mental health promotion, and elimination of high-impact communicable diseases that pose potential threat to the masses (WHO, 2020). I have found myself referring to the WHO website for information related to health concerns, specifically the newest Coronavirus strain that has emerged. I feel that information from the WHO site is the most accurate and up-to-date with information. This site addresses healthcare issues that could affect every man, woman, and child globally. The goal of the WHO is to help combat diseases and help build a better future for people everywhere (WHO, 2020).  All of the aforementioned would require significant research and standards of processing and disseminating information.  So obviously, as you pointed out and as described in the course material, EBP is and should be an integral part, the foundation even, in the work of reliable health organizations like the WHO (Laureate, 2018). Thank you!

March 21, 2010, was not EBP’s date of birth, but it may be the date the approach “grew up” and left home to take on the world.

When the Affordable Care Act was passed, it came with a requirement of empirical evidence. Research on EBP increased significantly. Application of EBP spread to allied health professions, education, healthcare technology, and more. Health organizations began to adopt and promote EBP.

In this Discussion, you will consider this adoption. You will examine healthcare organization websites and analyze to what extent these organizations use EBP.

Resources

Be sure to review the Learning Resources before completing this activity.
Click the weekly resources link to access the resources.

Finally, explain whether the information you discovered on the healthcare organization’s website has changed your perception of the healthcare organization. Be specific and provide examples.

By Day 6 of Week 1

Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days by visiting the websites they shared and offering additional examples of EBP or alternative views/interpretations to those shared in your colleagues’ posts.

Sample Answer 9 for Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?

I enjoyed reading your discussion post about the APNA organization. According to the article Improving Patient Care Through Nursing Engagement in Evidence-Based Practice, the best practice is where healthcare workers continually ask questions about treatment care that have resources for evidence-based practice (Crabtree et al., 2016). I agree with you that many professional development utilize evidence-based practice. Evidence-based practice is the best way to develop the care needed and safety of one because, as we all know, evidence-based practice is done through research, and sometimes it takes years to find the best practice.

The organization you choose is essential, as the article, Importance of Mental Health Education in Nursing, says mental health nursing and providing education has evolved and influx since the early 1990s (Philips & Hemphill, 2022). The importance of mental health and its impact has not gained national attention, so providing education, especially nursing, will prove in a good way. The APNA uses EBP to provide best practices for job satisfaction. Overall, I loved reading your post. It was very interesting for me.

Sample Answer for Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?

I focused on the CareCloud organization which is a healthcare technology company that offers cloud-based solutions to healthcare organizations. The organization’s mission is to serve as an innovative partner to the healthcare institutions and help in improving the clinical workflow, improve patient’s experience and increase revenue generation. The organization partners with more than 70 medical specialties in 50 states. The goals of the organization are to optimize care delivery and reduce operational expenses. More details about the company can be found on their website: https://www.carecloud.com/.

CareCloud’s mission and vision statements show they are committed to providing evidence-based principles. Evidence-based practices are all about innovations that improve the patient’s experiences. The institution has developed many systems including telehealth which improves the patients’ experience and lowers the medication costs. The evidence-based practices are evident in all their operations.

Importantly, the organization’s work is grounded in EBP because they work to improve the quality of care through collaboration and clinical research (Linsley et al., 2019). Evidence-based practices aim at solving the problems in clinical practice and this is evident in the organization’s activities (Mackey & Bassendowski, 2017). Telehealth and other IT solutions help in improving the clinical practice and experiences among healthcare institutions.

The information from the website has really altered my perception. Over time, I thought that the CareCloud organization focused on making a profit and expanding. However, the information from the website indicates that the company aims at improving the quality of the healthcare delivered to the patients.  As part of the EBP, the organization engages in clinical studies to determine the best practices and IT designs that would best serve the needs of the various patients.
