This bill will make a huge difference as sometimes an abortion is medically necessary due to rape, ectopic pregnancy, high risk, and deformities. I can not imagine having to have an abortion but just like everything it can become medically necessary.

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson is a nurse by profession. Johnson served as a nurse in Texas before she was elected in 1993 to represent the 30th Congressional District of Texas which she represents to date, making her the first nurse to serve in the United States Congress (Pollitt, 2020). Congresswoman Johnson has played a critical role in advocating for nurses’ role as advocates for public health because she introduced bill H.R. 1597 that the U.S. Congress passed to become the National Nurse Act of 2019.
The National Nurse Act of 2019 established the office of the National Nurse, improving healthcare delivery since nurses participate in national policy formulation. Before, nurses did not have a national office to advocate for their rights and be involved in formulating federal healthcare policy. The roles and responsibilities of the National nurse include serving as the national spokesperson for nurses in policy, preventative medicine, and leadership, working together with the Surgeon General’s office to identify and address national health priorities, advocating for healthcare professionals to work with community programs to improve health, increase emergency preparedness and public safety and prepare and submit biennial reports to the U.S congress on nurses working in the U.S Public Health Service (U.S Congress, 2019). The National Nurse Act of 2019 has helped to address health disparities because the federal government provides funding for community nursing programs which helps to increase healthcare access among vulnerable populations in the United States. Hence, congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson has used her nursing background to address health disparities through the enactment of the National Nurse Act of 2019, increasing the role that nurses play in national healthcare formulation by creating the office of the National Nurse, which works in collaboration with the Office of the Surgeon General to provide preventative care and advocate for healthcare access among all Americans.
Eddie Bernice Johnson’s main contribution is the passage of bill H.R. 1597, which became the National Nurse Act of 2019 after its adoption by the U.S Congress. Johnson used her nursing background to lobby for the bill’s passage because she knows nurses play a critical role in promoting healthcare since they spend more time with communities and patients than physicians. The importance of Eddie Bernice Johnson was that she helped to address health disparities and advocate for better working rights for nurses at the national level through her work as a representative of the 30th Congressional District of Texas in the U.S. Congress.

The importance of the nurse’s role is to advocate for improving healthcare delivery as they can easily help patients to make a decision such as regarding their health, policies, etc. Nurses support the patient’s care policy which can easily influence healthcare by providing safe, quality care as well as eliminating the risks of medical errors. Nurses have always been the patient’s advocate by providing proper care in a safe environment. Furthermore, nurses have an immense influence on healthcare policy and healthcare legislation which puts nursing in a unique position to impact change (Grand Canyon, 2018).
You are right Truth, congresswoman Lois Caaps is a woman of courage and ability. She has been a leader in what she calls “common-sense health care and education reforms” for more than 30 years (Sullivan-Marx & Kovner, 2021). Representative Capps taught for 10 years as an instructor of early childhood education at her local college. Lois Capps is a strong advocate for nursing. She has supported whistleblowing legislation to help improve the environments where nurses work and is very supportive of the expanding role opportunities for advanced practice nurses (Sullivan-Marx & Kovner, 2021). Overall we are fortunate to have a legislator who draws on her nursing education and experience to understand and improve our nation’s healthcare system.

Rep. Lois Capps, an RN from California and a Democrat in Congress, has fought to advance legislation like the Nurse Reinvestment Act that would solve the nation’s rising nursing shortage. The Nurse Reinvestment Act, or NRA, is an act of Congress that modifies the current Title VIII of the Public Health Service Act, which governs nursing education. In order to address the growing nursing shortage brought on by aging nursing staff, retention issues brought on by a stressful work environment, and difficulties attracting young people into nursing, this legislation was adopted in 2002 (Grand Canyon University, 2018).
The legislation requires the following steps for nurse recruitment and retention: a student debt payback and scholarship program, a nursing internship and residency program, career ladders to promote professional progression, grants for nurses seeking education in senior care, loan cancellation programs for students in advanced degree programs who agree to serve as nursing school teachers, and public service announcements promoting the nursing profession (Brom et al., 2018).
Despite the issue not yet being resolved, the Act has increased public awareness of the nursing shortage. It made the issue widely known. It inspires people to look for and research nursing shortage solutions.

Health-related policies are passed, supported, and influenced by nurse practitioners in Congress. One of the best examples is Congresswoman Lauren Underwood. She attended the University of Michigan after graduating from Neuqua Valley High School to gain her nursing degree. Before entering Congress, she worked in various health-related fields. During her time working for Medicare plans in Chicago, she was able to provide high-quality, cost-effective health care for patients. Her later work included working with the US Department of Health and Human Services as a senior advisor on various health issues. In addition to giving back to society, she has taught future nurse practitioners lessons through Georgetown University’s online master’s program (Collins, 2019).
In 2018, Congresswoman Lauren Underwood won the election to represent Illinois’ 14th congressional district in the US House of Representatives. With her active contribution, the Affordable Care Act was passed, which resulted in the reform of private health insurance, an increase in quality of care, and an expansion of Medicare coverage. According to Schaeffer & Haebler (2019), nurses are well aware of the plights of the healthcare sector and play a vital role in drafting health-related legislation. She demonstrates what a hardworking, dedicated, and self-assured nurse means. The broad knowledge she gained in her nurse role, and her experiences as a health professional made her a powerful health advocate. Her awareness of the sufferings of her patients, as well as how to alleviate them, is also beneficial to them.
