Whether one passes or fails an academic assignment such as the Grand Canyon University DQ 2: How will your worldview and cultural and spiritual competence affect your role and scope of practice as an advance registered nurse?  depends on the preparation done beforehand. The first thing to do once you receive an assignment is to quickly skim through the requirements. After understanding the requirements of the paper, the next phase is to gather relevant materials. The first place to start the research process is the weekly resources. Go through the resources provided in the instructions to determine which ones fit the assignment. After reviewing the provided resources, use the university library to search for additional resources. Nurses are expected to provide holistic care to all patients, accepting all cultural and spiritual beliefs. Educating nurses is a fundamental practice, helping to make patients feel comfortable throughout the care provided. My personal worldview is very simple and cliche, I just want to help people. I do not follow any specific religion or spiritual guidance. I do believe in a higher power. What you put out into the universe is how the world will treat you. You are the only person who can help yourself and I want to do right by people; a big reason why I became a nurse.

Regarding my nursing practice, I am only a new grad, but I triple-check everything I do before touching a patient. I am terrified of making a mistake and harming my patient. People say this feeling disappears as you gain more experience. In my opinion, it does not matter what my beliefs are, I want to provide holistic care by being a competent, well-thought nurse. It does not matter who walks through the doors, I will treat everyone the same. An alcoholic, druggie, or even a rude person, everyone deserves the utmost care. No one wa

Amber, thanks for sharing your viewpoint. I do not think that it is cliche at all to want to help people and make

everyone feel comfortable. Although you do not follow a specific religon or spiritual guidance I think it is important to educate yourself on the different cultures, religions, etc. I believe that your cultural and spiritual competence completely changes how you provide healthcare especially as an advanced registered nurse. Cultural competence is a basic standard in nursing and we should be practicing and developing as we are nurses so that by the time we are advanced practice nurses we can be proficient. A great article I found that is psychology based discusses the importance of cultural competence in nursing and how it aids growth and development of nurses while also incorporation relevant societal values (Colich, 2021). In order to give the best medical care to patients we have to demonstrate cultural awareness for their beliefs, race, and values (Colich, 2021). To do this, we have to have knowledge of patient’s cultural diversity. I know that when I have been in the patient’s role anytime the nurses were culturally competent to my spiritual needs, they were able to empathize, relate more to me, and attend more deeply to my needs. The hospital is already a stressful enough place so anything we can do as a healthcare team to make them more comfortable we should do.

As an old nurse and one that has worked with nursing students for decades, I would agree with you that triple checking things is only a benefit to you and your patients! You may have others that don’t agree with your practice right now, but you seem to be a conscientious nurse who wants to help her patients not hunt them. There is another side of this though. As you gain more and more experience you should become faster at your tasks, but double or even triple checking can save you many incident reports and keep your patients safe. According to Hewitt et al. (2022) when nurses double check everything before proceeding it allows more critical thinking behind the why you are doing something. This is critical as a nurse, because if we do not recognize if the treatment/interventions match the problem we should speak up to our charge nurse and possibly the provider who ordered the interventions. Good job Amber!

My personal worldview is based in Christianity. I grew up in Catholic school, and discovered God through the Catholic faith. As I grew older, I was drawn towards Christianity and it seemed that I was able to explore God more freely and experience the Holy spirit on a different less regimented level. I believe all of us, in one way or another, has to discover our higher power at our own pace. I believe everything is connected, and the Universe is God’s creation.

Working at Loma Linda University (LLU), I have grown to appreciate the spiritual influence of healing. LLU is a Seventh Day Adventist University Hospital. The Pastor sings and plays guitar throughout the unit every day. Many Doctors pray with patients and incorporate the body mind and spirit as a whole picture within the plan of care. There is very strong spiritual support for the staff, and we always pray before starting the shift.

One thing that I have learned from LLU, is the notion that we are here to serve one another. That is our main purpose in life, to serve one another with love and compassion. Jesus led through his life here on Earth with focus on service, love, forgiveness and suffering. Jesus was the complete opposite of the rulers and kings in his time. The leaders of that time ruled through fear, control and power. Jesus claimed not only to be king, he claimed to be God, but yet exuded love and sacrifice and intermingled with the sick, poor and afflicted.

As an advanced registered nurse, my spiritual competence and scope of practice will always be shaped by and related to my spiritual principles. Healing and caring for someone, not just on the physical level, but the emotional and spiritual level will increase positive patient outcomes. These deep-seated roots of spirituality will help keep me open minded and guide me through tests of strength and resiliency. Recognizing the internal signs of stereotypical thoughts or biases influence the growth of my inner self continuously throughout my life, relationships and career.

My personal worldview has been shaped by my experiences, family and friends, and religious beliefs. Growing up my parents had different religious beliefs, and both stressed the importance of respecting other’s beliefs and opinions. They would always tell me that no two people would ever share all the same beliefs or opinions. They allowed me to take my experiences and curiosities and create my own views and opinions. All my beliefs may not be the same as my parents or even other Christians, but I believe this does not make me any less of a person or a Christian. I grew up to be open-minded and compassionate of others and their beliefs. My father would always tell me not to talk about sex, religion, or politics with anyone. He would explain to me that people would take my beliefs and use them against me, or I would offend someone by sharing my thoughts or opinion. Initially growing up I believed my father was correct and I would remain silent and just listen when others would talk about those subjects. It took me years to realize that sitting in silence does not show respect for others but could ultimately shut doors and make people feel as if I did not care. I loved listening to other people’s beliefs and opinions, but how I expressed myself I realized I was missing an opportunity to connect with them. I learned how to ask appropriate questions and truly listen and hear someone. I am still growing and learning, but I feel like I am better at expressing myself and connecting with others.

As a nurse it is imperative that we listen to our patients, respect one another, and show empathy for others. Cultural competency and cultural awareness are essential components of being and advanced practice nurse. As a nurse it is imperative to be self-aware of our own beliefs and opinions and provide mutual respect for our patients and our community. Being self-aware and seeking knowledge of other people’s culture and beliefs is a lifelong adventure (DeNisco & Barker, 2019). We must listen, communicate, and respect our patients and community. It all begins with accepting our own opinions and acknowledging that our beliefs shape us into who we are today. We must seek basic knowledge of different cultures, religions, and communities. Although we may learn the basics, we must accept that we will never fully know everything. Showing respect and listening to the needs of others will assist in gaining trust so we can provide quality care and improve the lives and overall health of others. It is important that we ask questions and strive to be better and grow as individuals. I hope to continue my journey of cultural awareness and self-awareness and be the absolute best for my patients and community. I feel as though all the lessons I have gained in my life and experiences will help me continue to become the best nurse I can be.

Your discussion post highlights crucial aspects of healthcare disparities and the importance of cultural competence in improving patient outcomes. Nair and Adetayo (2019) emphasize that health status is influenced by factors like education, housing quality, diet, and cultural diversity within healthcare. DeNisco (2019) supports this by noting that culturally competent providers can mitigate these disparities, including income and racial inequalities. Your personal worldview advocating for equal healthcare access regardless of socio-economic status, race, or religion is commendable. You suggest governmental involvement in housing regulation, food assistance, and access to fresh food to address social determinants of health effectively. As a provider, you embody these values through compassionate care and patient education, ensuring equitable treatment for all. This holistic approach aligns with ethical principles in healthcare, promoting dignity and inclusivity for every patient.
