My personal Christian worldview is the framework that guides my thoughts and actions. The two principles of my personal worldview that are in common with Grand Canyon University (GCU) is that of Integrity and the quality of work produced. In my personal life, I believe in being a person of integrity and I teach my children to be people of integrity just as my family and church has taught me. So, I expect people around me to be people of integrity at work and especially within my church community. Likewise, in anything that I do, I expect to produce quality work to the best of my ability at home, work, school and in my community and a commitment to doing it and I hope that those around me would do the same. This personal worldview is portrayed in the mission and vision statement of GCU. The school being a faith-based institution expects its staff and students to be people of integrity who produce academic quality work with integrity. GCU integrates faith, learning and work into the school by weaving the Christian worldview into all the school degree curriculums. This integrates the knowledge of God and the universe to bring a better understanding of the world and ourselves. Hence, GCU attempts to prepare its students to produce quality work by being global citizens who are critical thinkers, responsible leaders and effective communicators by providing curriculum that is academically challenging based on Christian values and beliefs (Grand Canyon University (GCU), (n.d.).

As global citizens, the school expects us to be accepting of, empathetic towards and understanding of one another by remembering that everyone is different. While as critical thinkers, students are required to ask questions while pursuing knowledge and avoid blind acceptance of ideas but rather to work diligently to find solutions to problems not to dwell on the problems using analytical reasoning, critical evaluation and synthesizing. Also, the students are trained to be effective communicators by participations and presentation of ideas to one another. Therefore, as responsible leaders, students are encouraged to be grounded in the realities of life and the world at large, to accept the consequences of the choices that they make and to be kind, caring and selfless as they help others meet their potentials (Grand Canyon University (GCU), (n.d.).

These principles align with the vision and mission of my practice site and how it helps them to promote patient care. My practice site is committed to working together with all the health professionals to provide quality work and care to their patients by providing quality care that will improve the health of all the patients and to continue to give them the quality of life that they deserve that will continue to promote the vitality of our community through education and using evidence-based research and advancing innovative strategies and technologies (RWJBarnabas Health, (n.d.).

Mission and vision of my practice site aligns with my personal worldview and it aligns with my chosen school as well. It is to provide highest standards of compassion, commitment, excellence, professionalism, integrity, accountability and stewardship. These values are needed and important to each and everyone in providing care for our patients. This supports the service that we provide and means that we care in everything we do. Developing plans and taking action will ensure safety of our patients and will support management team when emergency issues or problems arise. In my practice area we are committed to provide ICARE (Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect and Excellence)to our Veterans. We care for those who served and their families and we take pride in giving our best everyday to provide excellent care for our Veterans. Besides that we care for our fellow employees too and perform our duties the best in our abilities.

I chose GCU because it coincide with my values and personal worldview. I am a catholic and GCU is a Christian University has similarity when it comes to our beliefs and traditions. Sharing the love of Christ to all and being selflessness is what we should be giving. Having faith, being humble, following the right path of what our Jesus has shown us and committed to have a strong foundation to lead and be able to transform when needed. Honoring God in all that we do and practice our christian beliefs is important. Its mission is to develop leaders, ministers and scholars who rightly handle God’s Word teach what accords with sound doctrine and equip the people of God for missional service within rapidly changing world (GCU, 2020). As a DNP learner, it is important that I agree with the mission and vision of the school because I want it to have a meaning.

I believe nursing is filled with compassion, commitment and service and many of us enter the field for that reason. One of the phrases I vividly remember when entering GCU’s website is “Find your Purpose” and this phrase stuck with me. I have found my purpose in a health organization, and I have also found my purpose in GCU. As you mentioned, GCU encompasses values and principles aligned with Christianity. GCU incorporates the Christian worldview into the curriculum to give the “opportunity to gain the skills, knowledge and values-based foundation to carry out GCU’s mission of preparing learners to become global citizens, critical thinkers, effective communicators and responsible leaders” (Grand Canyon University, 2022). A personal worldview plays an important role in the strategies developed in order to make a decision. In this case, we have all chosen GCU strategically and I wish all of us the best within the program.

Worldview is a part of global meaning, a basic set of beliefs and goals that guide the way in which people give meaning to their lives (Littooij et al., 2016a, b; Park, 2013a, b, p. 358). Worldview is a component about the norms and values in life. Values can form a point for a reflection on what is important and valuable and worthwhile in life. For me, worldview refers to belief, cultures, values and individual own view since we were young and until up to now. The disappearance of institutionalized, organized worldviews with moral, existential and spiritual authority in western society means that there is no longer a common language which would enable people to talk to each other about their vision of a good life, or to reflect upon the social constructs which could inform their actions and decisions (Alma, 2018, p. 54).

As a filipina we have a lot of traditions, cultures and beliefs that we follow in our country. And now, that I am a nurse and live here in the US I have to have an open-mind and be open with a lot of cultures and beliefs from our patients. Filipinos are very religious and take pride with family being close-knit together. Also, filipinos are very respectful to others and helps one another when in need. Making sure that we don’t disregard their views in life and we should honor and respect them. It is important for me that people treat with respect and as a professional. I always try to respect everyone I encounter and to all my patients. Providing high quality of care and at the same time acknowledging their wishes with respect is important. There are certain issues in healthcare can be perceived as problematic by the clinicians when it comes to beliefs and cultures. These worldview is not simple for various reasons but with these beliefs, cultures, philosophy and traditions it can change our perspective in life. Enabling how people see the different personal beliefs and cultures can have an impact with their decision making.

My Worldview

The two principles that have shaped my worldview include Godliness and responsibility to others. I always ensure that my actions, beliefs, and thoughts conform to the wishes and laws of God. I am constantly devoted to maintaining moral uprightness in my duties. I, therefore, refer all my actions to Biblical teachings and commands. My mission is to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ as I seek the Kingdom of God. I am also guided by the responsibility to others. As a follower of Jesus Christ, I believe that I am obliged to serve others. I, therefore, live to help those in need, pray with those in pain and suffering and support those that are heavy-ladened. The two principles enable me to live according to my Christian worldview. The principles positively impact my ability to think critically since I have a reference point for my decisions and actions. When thinking about issues in my life and practice, I base my reasoning on the knowledge I have in the field and on what the Bible says regarding the issue. This has helped me always act according to professional, ethical standards and Biblical teachings.

When caring for patients who do not share my philosophy, I practice open-mindedness. In such cases, I listen to the patient’s beliefs, thoughts, needs, and fears to understand their philosophy. I then act or care for them depending on their philosophy, whether it is in line with or against my principles (Pfeiffer, 2018). Open-mindedness ensures that nurses respect the principles and beliefs of patients even if they are against theirs. One caution that I take is to ensure that the patient’s philosophies do not influence mine.

I believe others delight in interacting with me since I do not try to impose my principles on their thoughts or judgments about life. I also respect their beliefs and ensure that my actions do not interfere with their lives or thoughts.
