As part of their humane and professional mandate, nurses are actively involved in policy advocacy. Such advocacy is characterized by nurses’ representation of patients, nurses’ needs, or the profession as a whole. In critical matters, nurses are involved in the legislative process to ensure that their proposals have legal and political support. However, the process is not as smooth as envisioned or expected. Barriers such as individuals sharing different viewpoints and retaliation are common. Jurns (2019) further noted that lack of adequate information regarding policy creation usually inhibits success. Due to such barriers, nurses can apply different strategies to enable them to represent the advanced registered nurse as leaders and patient advocates.

Always, the legislative process should be dominated by resilience and sufficient understanding of concepts and processes. Barriers are adequately resisted and overcome when policy promoters challenge them instead of evading them. A suitable example is where nurses or other policy promoters use their professional knowledge and comprehension of concepts to influence a change of opinions in individuals sharing different viewpoints. Reconciliation is crucial to come up with a common position that benefits patients, nurses, and the health practice at large. Safari et al. (2020) further mentioned that nurses involved in health and legislative policies should not participate in health policy-making activities at a moderate level. Accordingly, they should understand the procedures of the legislative process and act right while resisting all barriers. Approaching situations with an open mindset is also highly encouraged to reduce the chances of conflicts.

In any case, the legislative process encounters numerous barriers depending on the policy and advocacy team. Nurses should be prepared to face different challenges mentally and through the necessary resources. Resilience is essential, and an adequate understanding of the legislative and policy formulation process is part of the preparation as well.

Healthcare policies are introduced to create an impact on health facilities. This is how different activities can be conducted to achieve quality patient care. The health policies relate to introducing guidelines or requirements on how patient care can be provided with an impact on patient safety (Weberg et al., 2019). Policies that are introduced within the organization may have an impact on patient care or the quality of services that are provided to the patient. It can be possible to experience improvements related to patient safety and the introduction of policies that influence the cost of health services or quality care.

Patients may experience high costs to access services, requiring the introduction of advocacy to ensure that affordable health services are provided. In this case, the nurses may offer information related to appropriate guidance and measures for controlling the costs of services (Androus, 2021). Addressing health costs and other concerns may be controlled through education by coming up with decisions related to the development of policies. Nurse group leaders can engage in different activities to advocate for patient care and address healthcare costs. Following policies helps healthcare organizations conform with standards and regulations, which affects their funding, reputation, and accreditation. Policies can also affect how resources are allocated, how strategic planning is carried out within the organization, and how decisions are made, all of which can impact the standard and accessibility of patient care (Barr, 2023). In the framework of healthcare policies, nurse leaders are essential in promoting patient care. To ensure that policies align with patient interests and advance high-quality care, they can actively participate in the processes of policy creation and implementation. Nurse leaders can work with legislators, take part in advocacy campaigns, and provide their knowledge to help create laws that put patients’ safety, well-being, and contentment first.

Furthermore, nurse leaders may successfully manage costs and improve patient outcomes by implementing quality improvement projects and evidence-based practices inside their organizations. Nurse leaders support the provision of high-quality care within the confines of healthcare budgets by promoting innovations, cost-cutting strategies, and interdisciplinary teamwork. Nurse leaders can concentrate on projects that maximize resource utilization while maintaining patient outcomes in order to save healthcare expenditures. In order to encourage a focus on patient outcomes and satisfaction, nurse leaders should also support reimbursement models that reward value-based care rather than volume-based care. Nurse leaders show their dedication to patient care quality and financial responsibility by taking part in cost-effective initiatives. They can also actively engage in conversations and teamwork with other healthcare stakeholders to impact policy modifications that uphold an affordable and patient-focused healthcare system. By making these efforts, nurse leaders support the creation of policies that balance high-quality care delivery with cost containment.

Discussion Questions (DQ)

Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.

In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.

Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).

Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.

APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).

Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.

I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.

As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.

It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.

Late Policy

The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.

Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.

If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.

I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.

As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.


Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:

Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.

Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
