Week 1 Discussion

DQ1 Define how translational research plays a role in influencing policy? Provide an example of a local health care policy that has been recently enacted and or is awaiting legislative passage that has been influenced by research.

DQ2 Using the GCU Library (notably the GCU Library: Nursing and Health Sciences Research Guide), find a database, journal, or other collection of resources that focuses on translational research. Select a population health problem or issue of interest from the available studies. What type of translational research is used for the study? Provide rationale as to why this is the best type of translational research is best for the study, and explain why translational research is the most appropriate approach for this problem or population.

My experience with my leadership so far has been mostly positive. There was one instance that I will never forget when this executive leader, who is supposed to hold one of the highest positions in the hospital, came to visit our unit during our morning huddles. We discussed the new staffing method the hospital is about to implement, known as the NHPPD (Nursing actual Hours Per Patient Day) method. Of course, questions about patient acuities came up. Our unit is known for caring for acute medical psyche geriatric patients and is the designated acute medical-surgical- COVID unit. Our concern, of course, is patient acuities. The presenter did not answer many of our questions directly or clearly. Finally, the executive leader said, “If you are not happy with the staffing method, the door is open for you.” For us staff, it simply means shut up and suck it up, or you may be free to resign. I understand that being a leader is stressful, and you may not be able to please everybody, but still, you are being looked up to, and your knowledge, decisions, and attitude as a leader your subordinates are following as an inspiration. Patience is a virtue. A leader should be a force to calm down and bring balance. People look up to you for answers and solutions if there is an issue. Clearly, that leader did not show patience or compassion to her staff.

DQ1 You attend a local health fair organized by several health care research companies. You notice that a company is distributing a trial drug to other attendees at one of the booths. When you approach one of the researchers, you are offered a waiver to sign for participation in the trial.

What ethical or legal parameters should the researchers have considered prior to distributing the trial drug at the health fair? If you were on the translational research team, what steps would you have taken to maintain ethical and legal guidelines?

DQ2 In nursing research, how are respect for the persons, potential benefits and burdens of the research, and justice kept in balance? Provide examples of how you would ensure this balance in your research.

Week 3 Discussion

DQ1 Discuss how evidence-based practice is defined as translational research. Describe the framework that supports that definition. Identify a population health issue you are interested in researching and discuss the issue using that framework. As you select an issue, remember you will be building upon your research in this course for your evidence-based practice project in the next course. Think about how you can focus your research now to help you complete your EBP project.

Note: While you will only be proposing a solution and implementation plan in your EBP project, keep in mind EBP projects lay a foundation for doctoral research, since doctoral candidates have the opportunity to actually implement their projects. If you are interested in pursuing doctoral education, it is a good idea to choose an issue you would be interested in pursuing in greater depth. The research and work you complete on your EBP project now can be used if you choose to move forward into doctoral education.

DQ2 Identify at least one barrier that relates to challenges with population health. Consider how you could employ translational research to potentially overcome this barrier. Identify the best type of translational research to address this barrier, and provide rationale for the type you have chosen. What would be the challenges of using this type? What strategies would you employ to provide an understanding of your chosen type of translational research and to gather collaborative support?

Week 4 Discussion

DQ1 How does epidemiology helps in researching and addressing population health challenges? Provide a specific contemporary example.

DQ2 Research a health concern that impacts a population with which you are familiar. How do biostatistics affect the research focus? How do you define the population as your patient? Make sure to include the population and health concern.
