Professional Development Assignments:

Based on what you have learned so far this week, create a educational presentation with detailed notes and recorded audio comments for all content slides that addresses each of the following points/questions. Be sure to completely answer all the questions. Use clear headings that allow your professor to know which bullet you are addressing on the slides in your presentation. Support your content with at least four (4) citations throughout your presentation. Make sure to reference the citations using the APA writing style for the presentation. Include a slide for your references at the end. Follow best practices for PowerPoint presentations (an example is located in the Resources tab) related to text size, color, images, effects, wordiness, and multimedia enhancements.  Use the audio recording feature with the PowerPoint. Alternatively, you may use a smartphone or tablet to record yourself speaking, should you be unable to use the audio feature within PowerPoint.

Title Slide (1 slide)

The various kinds of health professionals are educated in separate schools but with considerable overlap in curricula and training requirements. They are, however, expected to integrate their training and work together after graduation. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of this approach to professional education in terms of costs, educational efficiency, and patient care quality.(4 slides).

An oversupply of physicians in many urban regions contrasts with continuing problems of access in rural and inner-city areas. Why does the mal-distribution of physicians persist in spite of the number of physicians graduated? (2-3 slides)

The health care delivery system now places increased emphasis on maintaining wellness and on promoting disease avoidance through healthy behaviors and lifestyles. What challenges does this new orientation pose for our existing system of medical education and training? (2-3 slides)

Health Care Information System

HOSPITAL INFORMATION SYSTEM (HIS)

Health care systems diagram showing various health care information systems, their components, and connections with other health care departments:

Information System for Patient Care
Patient Management System (PMS)
Clinical Information System (CIS)
Managerial Information System
System for Clinical Support Services

Electronic Medical Record
Patient Information Database
Managerial Information Database

A healthcare information system is defined simply as a system designed to manage healthcare data (Wager, Lee, & Glaser, 2017). The healthcare information system above is mainly divided into two parts, the information system for patient care and managerial information system. The information system which supports human resource, administration and hospitality management activities are arbitrarily placed under the managerial information system. Clinical among other functions relating to patient care are placed under information system for patient care. The main function of the clinical information system is to support or facilitate direct patient care functions. All the data concerning the patient are stored in a well-designed patient information database. Managerial data are stored in the managerial information database (Carvalho, Rocha, van, & Abreu, 2019). During patient care, providers can record, submit, and retrieve data efficiently through electronic medical record software.

Currently, electronic health records and hospital information systems are considered as a major part of several healthcare systems across the world. The use of healthcare information system has several benefits to both the patient and the healthcare system among other stakeholders. Some of these benefits include easy access to information, increased healthcare professional’s productivity, minimum time wastage, reduced medical errors, increased work efficiency, improved patient safety, improved patient satisfaction, improved patient outcome and improved clinical management (Khalifa, Alswailem, & 6th International Conference on Emerging Ubiquitous Systems and Pervasive Networks, 2015). Studies also show that healthcare information system reduces the expenses which are associated with paper medical records, improve the accuracy and efficiency of billing and cording and lastly, increase data security and retrieval ability.

Despite the benefits associated with health care information system and electronic health records, there are still several challenges encountered. Some of such challenges include interoperability, where different software is required to exchange data with each other. This has been a point of improvement for many years to enhance the effectiveness of the healthcare information system (Farzandipur, Jeddi, & Azimi, 2016). Purchasing the software among other facilities required to implement the system is also expensive limiting its extent of use. The other challenge facing healthcare information systems is the availability and integrity of the operations data. Mostly, the hospital information system is designed in such a way that they are only clinical and accounting focused and hence may lack data required for operational studies.  Keeping the patient data safe and confidential is also hard as a security bridge has been an issue with electronic health records for years. However, with time, these challenges will have been dealt with and healthcare facilities will be able to benefit maximumly from a healthcare information system.

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS

Discussion Questions (DQ)

Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.

Read also:  N 502: Health Care Systems Module 3 Assignment

Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source.

One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.

I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.

Weekly Participation

Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.

In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.

Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).

Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.

APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).

Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.

I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.

As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.

It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.

LopesWrite Policy

For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.

Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.

Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?

Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.

Late Policy

The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.

Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.

If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.

I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.

As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.

Communication

Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:

Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.

Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
