Preparing the Assignment
Overview Of The Healthcare Policy Concern
The Stronger Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act provides considerable insights into the interventions that can be used to prevent child abuse and neglect and prevent its incidences in America. However, it can be noted that the act neglected the role of community empowerment through education in addressing the child abuse and neglect issue. Children are part of the vulnerable communities that often experience significant health-related challenges in their societies (Levine et al., 2018). Accordingly, they are victims of abuse as well as neglect, which affects their social, emotional, mental, and physical health.
States in America have embraced policy initiatives that aim at addressing the health needs of children who are victims of abuse and neglect in their societies. Family factors such as social isolation, family stress, and poor child-parent relationship increase the risk of child abuse and neglect. Therefore, the effective management and prevention of child abuse and neglect begin from addressing the social and family factors that contribute to the problem. Accordingly, a focus should be placed on educating families and communities on the risk factors and effects of child abuse and neglect. Health education should also aim at raising community awareness about the existing social support systems and healthcare services that are available for children at risk or affected by abuse and neglect (Schrier, 2019).
Proposed Solution
The proposed student solution for addressing the issue of child abuse and neglect is the incorporation of community education into the Stronger Child Abuse and Treatment Act. Health education is an important tool for creating social awareness about the health risks of child abuse and neglect, contributing factors, and the role of the members of society in addressing it. Health education also empowers the community members to play a proactive role in the exploration of effective interventions that aim at addressing the issue of child abuse and neglect. The community members are empowered to embrace interventions that contribute to the creation of safe environments for the children. Health education is also an important tool that can empower the community members to advocate for improved policies for addressing the issue of child abuse and neglect.
Relevance to The Community or Population Group
Implementing the proposed solution will be relevant to both the community and the population group, in this case, the children. Firstly, the community members will be aware of the risk factors, health effects, prevention, and their role in preventing child abuse and neglect. The creation of awareness will empower them to play a crucial role in ensuring that children are provided with safe environments that minimize the risk of abuse and neglect. The community members will also be empowered to agents of change in implementing interventions to address the issue of child abuse and neglect. They will take the responsibility of ensuring that all the children in their communities are protected from perpetrators of child abuse and neglect (Lim, 2018). Therefore, the empowerment of community members is likely to result in a significant reduction in the rates of child abuse and neglect in the state.
Communication Techniques
The proposed solution will be presented to Schrier Kim. Kim is the elected representative for Washington District. Schrier Kim was selected because she sponsored the Stronger Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act for the year 2019-2020. She also has a background of passion for children. She is, therefore, the most suitable person to receive the proposed solution since she can influence the congresspersons to adopt the solution. Communicating a proposal so that the concerned individuals buy into it requires good communication techniques since the people need to get the message right and get the importance of why a change is needed. For the forthcoming presentation, various communication and presentation techniques will be applied. One of the strategies will involve the use of visual aid such as pictures and graphical representations to better help in meeting the presentation objectives (Fauzi, 2016)). The use of pictures and graphs is essential in making the audience get the information and the message to be conveyed faster.
Another technique to be employed in making the presentation short and interactive. The elected officials are usually very busy people, and therefore it is not wise to give a time-consuming presentation. To ensure that boredom is kept at bay and that the official and other stakeholders get the message, the presentation will be short and precise, not taking longer than fifteen minutes. The other technique which will be used is making the presentation an interactive one to make sure that everyone in the presentation room contributes whenever possible (Fauzi, 2016). A non-interactive presentation may, in many cases, be boring such that the listeners get distracted easily, hence missing the points put across.
Another technique I will use is focusing on the audience. People value eye contact, and they tend to listen better if they feel there is eye contact which can keep them engaged and interested (Fauzi, 2016). Another important technique will be not to rush the presentation but keep the presentation at a steady and slow pace. The slow and steady pace ensures that the audience gets time to digest what is being presented. Practicing how to speak at a slower pace is, therefore, key to getting the message across.
Self –Evaluation Of The Video Presentation
Self-evaluation is usually one of the most important processes after a presentation. Self–evaluation helps in determining what an individual has done best and the areas that he/she needs to improve. A self-evaluation was therefore done for the video presentation on the need to incorporate community education into the Stronger Child Abuse and Treatment Act. One of the strengths of the presentation was the nature of the content. The problem was well research and enough facts collected. This enabled coming up with rich content that has the capability to persuade the elected official and other stakeholders to push for the identified policy change.
The content of the presentation entails the urgency needed in reacting to the ongoing cases of child abuse and the glaring gaps in the current policy protecting the children from abuse. Even though the presentation quality was top-notch, there are areas that I feel I need to improve on after the self-evaluation process. One of such is my style of delivery. I realized that I have too much content for the short session. It, therefore, made me feel a bit nervous; therefore, I found myself trying to rush so that I could pass the message I had. Rushing a presentation dents the quality of the presentation by compromising things like articulation, putting to risk the clarity of the message being passed across.
Conclusion
Children are among the most vulnerable groups of individuals, and as such stronger policies should be put in place to protect them from unwanted acts such as abuse and harassment. This paper, therefore, proposed a change in the existing Stronger Child Abuse and Treatment Act to include community education with the hope that community education will create more awareness on the need to protect children from abuse and neglect. Such proposals usually receive better attention if they are presented to the elected officials; therefore, a presentation to the official was therefore planned.
