There are also telecommunication tools such as SBAR which is very common for nurses and hourly rounding. Point of care is used in all different specialties across the board from pediatrics to long term care. I currently work in the emergency department and we use pregnancy dipsticks and rapid stress test or flu tests. Upon your shift you are also given a telephone in which you can contact anyone in the hospital that has to do with the patients care at that time, these phones do not work once out of the hospital for HIPPA purposes.
In the future my role will be different as an APN and I will gain even more responsibility. I will use things like the CDSS to help me be more active and involved in my patients care. This will help keep me up to date on the things that my patients need or have had done preventing duplicate testing and missed preventative exams. as well as keeping us in contact with one another. Information will be easily accessible for myself and the patients. To keep current on this I will have to maintain my educational learning and CME up to date. This is where the new technologies and upgrades are taught prior to coming out or I am sure there will be informational sessions as artificial intelligence continues to enhance. This is a career where education never stops and everything constantly evolves.

With information technology comes a lot of benefits or pros and cons such as a decrease in medication errors, easy and fast flow of patient information for everyone involved. However, there are times when the privacy of or clients have not been protected. Everyone is entitled to the maximum level of personal privacy, respect, empathy, care and advocacy. Unfortunately, the people we claim to care so much for are no longer seen and treated as individuals because we have generated them a number, and a very impersonal label called, “Patient.”
Over and over I have said to colleagues, if we follow the textbooks, we will lose those who came to us for help. We have to get to know them on an individual level and have the ability to communicate with them on an individual level as a person. We get frustrated and lessen the level of care we feel to protect and safeguard our clients in multiple ways because we are not relating to them as individuals with individual needs so if one request a list of their medications, request that the clerk do not ask them to say their social security number, full name and date of birth out aloud in the queue at the pharmacy or leave their name and date of birth uncovered in the visitor log at the reception, in return for personal privacy of one’s personal information is an attitude and other labels that this person is difficult.

Whenever we ignore the steps we should take to protect client privacy, we are ignoring evidence based research. As an APN, whether or not my clients are private pay or ACA (Obamacare) it is my responsibility to protect the personal privacy and confidentiality of my patients .

Throughout this course I have learned so much more about nursing informatics and the role it plays in our everyday nursing practice. I personally have experienced a growth in information literacy and computer literacy. Throughout this course and the previous ones we took we have had many opportunities to explore multiple databases and other applications to complete our assignments. Prior to taking this course, I did not know how to take a screenshot on the computer and never heard of the application called “Snipping Tool”. I also never heard of Respondus Lockdown Browser, and using these applications I was unfamiliar with challenged me to improve my competency and I was able to navigate and learn how to use them. The more I was challenged, the more knowledge I acquired. As a future APRN, it will be my responsibility to ensure competency in modern technology as it plays a major role in nursing practice, and building knowledge will also increase my patients’ safety and quality of care. For example, being competent in the EHR at my facility will allow me as the APRN to not only review my patients charts, but also prevent any medical errors with the alerts in the system in addition to preventing any unnecessary duplicate orders. I can also utilize computer and information literacy to guide me in utilizing current evidence-based practices to further assist with my clinical decision making for my patients plan of care. The knowledge I have acquired from taking this course will guide me in my future practice as an APRN and will make me more confident in this future change of role.
