Type of Group Therapy

The article by Pessagno and Hunker (2013) investigated the use of group psychotherapy in first-time mothers who are at a risk of being affected by post-partum depression. The group psychotherapy was short-term in nature. The participants were divided into two groups of psychotherapies that ran for eight weeks. The duration of the sessions was 90 minutes. According to Fawzi et al., (2020), group psychotherapy is effective for mental disorders due to its ability to transform the negative energies and behaviors of the patients. The cost-effectiveness and enhanced outcomes such as decline in relapse of symptoms make it desirable for use in practice.

Participants

The participants for the research by Pessagno and Hunker (2013) were first-time mothers who were at a risk of developing post-partum depression. The participants completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale for their scoring of the risk for post-partum depression among them. Mothers with EPDS score of 11 or more were requested to participate in the research. The participants had different demographic characteristics. This included differences in age, level of education, marital status, history of psychiatric treatmentm and type of treatment.

Reasons for their Selection

The mothers who participated in the study by Pessagno and Hunker (2013)  were selected because of a number of reasons. Firstly, baseline assessment revealed them to be at a high risk of developing post-partum depression. Their high risk could be seen from their score of 11 or more in the EPDS scale. The second reason for their selection to participate in this research is that they consented to take part in the research. The participation of the mothers in the research was voluntary. As a result, the selected mothers consented to participate voluntarily in the study. The thid reason for their selection was to reduce the negative impacts associated with post-partum depression. Studies have shown that post-partum depresison is associated with poor health outcomes such as increased use of medications, loss of productivity and independence, and high costs of healthcare. Therefore, the participants were selected for the study with the aim of minimizing these impacts of post-partum depression in their health.

Setting of the Group

Setting refers to a place where a research was conducted. The setting of undertaking a research should facilitate the optimum acquisition of accurate data for the research. The setting for this study was a community hospital located in New Jersey. The participants in the study must have given birth in the hospital. As shown by the authors, participant screening was done 72 hours after their delivery. The screening provided objective assessment of all the mothers who were at a risk of developing post-partum depression.

Frequency of Group Meetings

The group psychotherapy sessions were conducted over eight week period. The duration of the meetings was shorter than the recommended due to request from the participants. These stakeholders provide them with the emotional, social, and physical support they need to adjust to their maternal roles. The other curative factor is duration and frequency of therapy sessions. The therapy sessions should be long to enable the participants to explore their abilities in addressing their problems. They should also be given adequate time to enable them to explore their issues, opportunities, and threats to their recovery (Brown & VanArsdale, 2019). The last curative factor is resource availability and use. Mothers at risk of post-partum depression need access to resources such as social support groups and mental health services (Gillis & Parish, 2019). These resources should be used effectively to promote their mental health and wellbeing.

Exclusion Criteria

Pessagno and Hunker (2013) used specific aspects to exclude participants in their research. One of the exclusion strategies was those participants who declined to take part in the research. The participation in the research was voluntary. Therefore, those who were not willing to take part in the research were excluded. The other exclusion criteria was mothers who had childcare issues. The participants were provided asistance with childcare. However, those who felt that the needs of their children could not be met adequately were excluded in the research. The participants who had issues with the lenght of committment to the group therapy sessions were also excluded. The last exclusion strategy that was used was participants who expressed a lack of interest towards the therapy.

Findings

The results of the study revealed that the use of group psychotherapy was effective in treating and preventing post-partum depression among mothers at risk. The effectiveness could be seen in the significant decline in the EPDS scores of participants in both groups after the implementation of the therapy. The pre-intervention EDPS scores for group 1 and 2 were 16.13 and 15.5 respectively. The scores declined to 6.38 in group 1 and 6.63 in group after group psychotherapy intervention. The study also revealed that group psychotherapy has long-term benefits to mothers at risk of post-partum depression. The effectiveness could be seen from the results from both groups at six months and beyond that revealed significant decrease in EPDS scores. The last finding is that group psychotherapy improves the social skills of those at risk. This could be seen in the ability of the participants to form strong social bonds amongst them.

Impact of Limitations

The study by Pessagno and Hunker (2013) is associated with a number of limitations. The first one is the small size. The data obtained from 16 participants that were used in this research might not be generalizable to a larger population. It is uncertain whether the findings willl be consistent with the use of a larger population. The selection of participants was also prone to selection bias. The bias is likely to affect the reliability and validity of the outcomes of the study. However, these limitations cannot affect my ability to use the outcomes presented in the article. This is attributed to the fact that the study is among the few researches that have investigated the use of group psychotherapy in first-time mothers at risk of post-partum depression.
