Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 250 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. I have decided to complete my BSN for a few different reasons. One reason is to further my knowledge in the most recent evidence based practice of nursing in order to provide better patient care. Academic nursing research is crucial to providing quality nursing care because it gives the foundation for evidence-based practice (EBP) that is often the catalyst for changes that impact patient outcomes (Falkner 2018). The next reason is my place of work requires that all ADN nurses obtain a BSN or higher within 3 years of hire, and lastly the more education I achieve the higher I get paid. All three of these reasons point back to an overarching idea that I am here getting my BSN to further myself along in my career and become a better nurse. I don’t have many concerns with getting started in my bachelorette program except the sole fact that I’d rather be outside enjoying playing sports or doing activities outside rather than being on the computer. I have never been one to like sitting on a computer for any period of time really. A few strategies that I can implement is time management, using evidence based practice sources of information, and remembering to ask for help when I don’t understand or am feeling overwhelmed. Enlist your family to keep a master calendar so everyone knows when you’re working, going to class and studying. And be sure to schedule some free time for the things you like to do, whether it’s working out, reading, listening to music or spending time with your family. That balance will help you get through the rigors of nursing school (Murphy 2015).

  Essentials of Baccalaureate Education in Nursing requires bachelor-educated nurses to understand nine important topics (AACN, 2020). Quality and Safety Education for Nurses has helped me learn many things that apply to achieving these essentials. The most important essential that I have gained knowledge of is Interprofessional Communication and Collaboration for Improving Patient Health Outcomes. Continuous quality improvement is a process in which safety, processes, and patient care can be improved. The continuous quality improvement process is modeled after a Plan, Do, Study, Act cycle (O’Donnell & Gupta, 2022).  Knowledge of the continuous quality improvement process will allow growth as a nurse individually and professionally.

      I plan to integrate this knowledge into my nursing practice by becoming more active in the unit-based teams present in my unit. I had not realized that the changes made in my department were an effort to use the CQI process. Now that I am aware of the purpose of initiating change, I am motivated to help in this process. I plan to initiate a CQI project to initiate the standardization of report sheets. I think this would benefit the patients, by having the nursing staff share the same information consistently. When the bedside nurse is aware of what is expected to be known for each patient, they will be prepared. This will improve patient care and patient safety. If standardized reports are implemented, we can assess many areas of care to see if improvements are being made. Medication errors and improved parent satisfaction are two possible areas to be assessed.

     This course has built on the knowledge that I already had by highlighting how to initiate change. As a nurse, I knew that practices changed based on evidence-based research. I was not aware of the CQI process that is used. I also did not realize the impact that I could have individually on initiating change. Understanding the steps and using measurable goals has shown me the value each staff member can have to improve their unit and ultimately increase patient safety.

So many topics come to mind and how they correlate with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s (AACN’s) Essentials of Baccalaureate Education in Nursing and its values with this course. At first to be honest I just thought that the difference in having a BSN versus an ADN or to be a diploma nurse was the basis of being in management or specializing, or not. I find the viewpoints that I’ve grown towards learning while my short time of being a nurse have led me to this path. It is notable that Theielmann (2019) claimed that, regardless of educational preparation, no negative outcomes are reported in patient satisfaction, effective use of nurses, or empowered decision-making. I personally would not have went for the BSN route if it was not alluring from a financial standpoint and if it was not paid for, to be honest.

The sheer ideal of integrating healthcare policy, finance, scholarship for evidence-based practice, professional values, information management and application of patient care technology all correlate to the patient experience and positive patient outcomes. Seeing how joint commission from this viewpoint towards how effective and ominous it once seemed as a CNA to the real life scenarios of them being able to quantify a healthcare system and really establish their viewpoints speaks highly about how important JACHO is to patient care and standards of practice within healthcare. Helping to acclimate to the leadership positions and really understanding these inner workings is something beneficial and also astounding because nursing and healthcare is changing rapidly.

One of the most interesting and relevant things that I am taking away from this is the process improvement brought on from the piece “To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System (2000)”. I appreciated this document to be shared in this format for us to explore because the worst days are the busy ones where we get caught up and make mistakes that can be detrimental or even sentinel to our patients. The deafening number of 65% of sentinel events caused by miscommunication really does bring it back to the basics as noted by Sherwood (2021). Hearing our patients, coworkers, and even ourselves is important in how we process every aspect of our lives as well as our jobs. It is the difference between hearing to respond, and hearing to actually listen. No one comes into work to do bad and hurt ourselves or our patients and the human part of what we do as nurses can be lost in this translation while getting into the robotic and mundane tasks. Furthermore using this as a basis towards preventing medication errors, communication issues, understanding issues and really solidifying my staff to feel comfortable enough to speak up and speak out about errors they witness or actually occur only helps us as a team to grow.

This course has helped me to meet various AACN Essentials, including: Essential II (Basic Organizational and Systems Leadership), Essential III (Evidence-based practice), Essential V (Health Care Policy and Regulation), and Essential VI (Interprofessional Collaboration and Communication). The AACN Essentials are vital to my growing as a proactive force in healthcare, instead of just a passive component of it (AACN, 2008). Pre-licensure nursing consists mostly of education in procedural and day-to-day aspects of being a floor nurse; the bachelor’s program helps to foster a formalized, rigorous subtext to the general nurse’s actions for the purpose of passing the enlightenment onto the patient.

For Essential II, this course helped me to understand how QSEN and the various Quality Improvement (QI) methods we studied actually affect a facility/organization on a macro level. For Essential III, this course has further reinforced, in me, the need for logically consistent, rigorously quantified research/data to provide proper context and justification for any QI changes suggested or applied in any given facility. For Essential V,  this course has opened my eyes to the sordid world of healthcare policy and regulation, which can often be confusing and stressful for staff and patients to attempt to navigate through. And finally, for Essential VI, this course has shown me how important it is to discuss safety and quality procedures openly with patients and coworkers to foster a culture of transparency and iterative improvement.

These Essentials will help to improve patient outcomes by encouraging nurses to think like leaders and proactively improve their workplace culture and policy regarding patient safety and satisfaction. Using the knowledge I have acquired, I will further iterate on my own practice by ensuring I am up-to-date with my facility’s regulation and procedure changes as soon as possible. I will ensure that I am well-read and understand the policy so as to make me a reliable source of information for my patients in the future.
