The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is a terminal degree which prepares graduate nurses for advanced nursing roles that include clinical practice and leadership. DNP individuals are positioned better to meet the practice requirements as recommended by the Institute of Medicine’s report in 2010. Through the DNP, nurses possess unique perspective on inter-professional efforts to enhance health care service delivery. As such, the DNP has profound effects on the regulation of advanced registered practice nurses (APRNs) as it implies that with increased education, training, and experience, advanced practice nurses should be allowed to practice based on their scope (Edwards et al., 2018).
