By showing love, nurses learn to treat others the same manner in which they wish to be treated too.
I also believe that nurses should be kind in their practice and personal lives. Kindness is a virtue that entails being considerate or generous to others. Nurses should show kindness to their patients. It is important in nursing practice, as it enhances patient engagement in the care process. Kindness in nursing entails providing patient-centered and compassionate care to the patient (Yeşilçınar et al., 2018). The incorporation of kindness into the care process results in patient satisfaction with the care as well as empowerment with the disease management process. For example, the empowerment of patients results in their increased treatment adherence and engagement in self-management behaviors that improve the outcomes of treatment for their health problems (Ng & Luk, 2019). By being considerate of the healthcare needs of the patients, nurses can develop accurate plans of care that addresses both the actual and potential health needs of the patients. Thank you so much for your work in rehabilitation. I have so much respect for what your facility is trying to do to prevent hospital readmissions. Not only is it terrible for the patient to be in and out of the hospital often for the same or related problems but it’s very disheartening to see a patient that you discharged pop back up in the system. We treat a lot of sepsis on my unit and then discharge to inpatient rehab to help patients get their strength back. They often get readmitted with the same infection or a new one and it’s usually worse the next time.
A recent study in France reviewed sepsis outcomes from 2014 to 2018 and found that of the 187,587 ICU admissions with sepsis that were discharged, 65% were readmitted within a year(Lakbar et al., 2022). That’s 121,932 readmitted with sepsis. The also found that incidence of sepsis was increasing and while positive clinical outcomes increased too so did readmissions(Lakbar et al., 2022). So, they’re getting better at treating sepsis and discharging their patients but they end up back in the hospital with a recurrent infection anyway. There’s definitely a disconnect in that transition to outpatient that’s causing these patients to require hospitalization again. It’s why I’m so glad to hear that your facility is working on that problem too.
