In my nursing practice, I have been influenced to develop certain basic cognitive orientation that is shaped by factors such as the societal norms and views on religion, spirituality and the cultural practices. There is no single factor that outweighs the other but both work in tandem to shape my thoughts and practice as a nurse. The family setting was instrumental in instilling the initial values of respect, honesty and hard work. As my social circle grew, other factors that have been shaping my nursing practice such as interpersonal skills, more specifically communication skills, feeling of compassion and empathy also developed. The nursing process requires a holistic approach in order to be able to reach out to the patient and help the patient on full recovery process. Therefore, a holistic approach ensures the entirety of the human aspect is considered in the care process that is; the physical body, the soul and the spirit. The wholeness of a human is put into consideration with the spiritual aspect having a higher value in itself because it can have influence over the psychological well-being and directly influence self-actualization (Nikfarid et al., 2018). The purpose of the present paper is therefore to discuss my worldview as well as personal statement that influence my nursing practice.

Religious, Spiritual, and Cultural Values

The spiritual aspect in my life has a had a significant impact on my nursing practice. Having been raised in a Christian family, I was introduced to the bible teachings early in life. I attended Sunday schools from the age of five where I developed the strong foundation on Christian values. As a Christian nurse, that is where I was first taught about compassion, empathy care for others and above all respect for human life and dignity. Teachings of Jesus Christ about love for one another were deeply ingrained in me and was critical in my choice to pursue the nursing career. The concept of nursing with the heart of Christ has influenced my love for the patients and this ensures that I give the patients the best care they deserve. The strong ties established out of love between the patient and the nurse, helps the nurse to have a strong sense of purpose (Cain, 2016). This makes the nurse feel like the patients are part of one big family and results to the nurse advocating for better care for the patients hence improved patient safety and outcome. Additionally, this has helped me establish a sense of meaning in my nursing practice and offer the patients the dignity they deserve as brethren in Christ. Therefore, love is a pillar in my practice and this is demonstrated by the listening ear I give to the patients, being able to clearly listen to their feelings and being ready to address their feelings and giving specialized care or options of care according to their needs and requests (Reich, 2015).

Additionally, as a Christian nurse, the virtue of compassion has helped me in my nursing practice. This helps me to reflect on the

patients’ suffering by viewing it from my personal perspective. With compassion, I am able to sympathize with the patient and be able to understand their suffering. As the nurse attends to the patient, it is not just enough to treat the patient as one must also have a feeling of what the patient is going through. This is essential and will raise the patient’s feeling and attitude towards the care given and will help boost the chances of the patient recovering from the illness. It is imperative to note that compassion is a critical pillar of the nursing practice. It is the one that compliments the nurse competency since without it the competency could be brutally inhuman (Maxwell, 2017).

Patience is another Christian value that was instilled in me at a young age and it has proved to be very valuable in my nursing practice. With patience, I have been able to allow enough time to listen to the patient’s views and feelings, and this helps in the process of diagnosis and making decisions on the care program to be offered to the patient. It is the patience that helps the nurse perform the same task over a long period of time and not get tired. This helps by improving the relationship between the nurse and the patient since the patient will have a feeling of self-worth and also establish trust which is crucial in the healing process. The virtue of patience is demonstrated when Christ had patience with his disciples as he had to remind them from time to time the need to remain awake and pray. For example, in the book of Mathew Chapter 26 Verse 40, Jesus was patient even when facing tribulations. He asked the disciples to keep watch and pray but when he left them for an hour, he came back and found they were deep asleep. He did not get angry with them but he encouraged them to pray so that they do not fall into temptation. This demonstrates how the Christian nurse should be exercise patience when sometimes the patients are not following the advises and prescriptions they are given by nurses and physicians (Mathis, 2016).

The cultural value of respect for all has been very valuable in my nursing practice. The respect for other person’s views, their beliefs and practices is important in fostering a positive working environment. It is imperative for the nurse to appreciate but at the same time respect the patient’s culture, religion and beliefs. In the recent times, as nurses, we work in a multicultural and diverse world where one needs to have the globalized perspective and understand the fact that we are unique and from different backgrounds and this is key to our own existence. The nurse is called upon to be sensitive of such diversity, have enough knowledge about the differences, acknowledge the differences but should not allow it compromise the quality of services offered (Liang et al., 2017).

Humanistic Nursing Theory

The theory was developed by Peterson and Zderad in the early I960s based on the blending the phenomenological and existential philosophies (5 Nursing Theories for Nurse Educators, 2017). The theory emphasizes on establishment of a dialogue between the nurse and the patient. This helps the nurse incorporate the patient’s feelings in their view of the patient hence develop a better understanding of the patients underlying health situation. The humanistic theory is built on three key concepts of dialogue, community and phenomenological nursing. Dialogue encompasses the establishment of communication channels in three dimensions. First, the dialogue can take a form of person to person, second aspect can be in the form of person to object dialogue and finally the group dialogue that can include an entire society, community or a group of people. The concept of community ensures that people are able to share their views, experiences and ideas that could be of great benefit to other members in the community. A good example is the use of support groups to tackle certain healthcare challenges like drug and substance abuse.

The third concept of the humanistic theory of nursing involves the phenomenological nursing. It has five phases that is, a preparation to understand one’s perception and experiences with no pre judgement or prejudice and at the same time appreciating different worldviews, search for knowledge about the patient’s view on their experiences, reflecting on the experiences of the previous incidences with the aim of analyzing and comparing. The next two step focus on synthesizing of the information and utilizing the ideas that have been found out on the patient’s perception in relation to their experiences. This model of nursing theory reinforces by personal beliefs in the nursing practice. It is in line with my Christian values of love, compassion and patience. It is relevant because it allows for dialogue and appreciation of other people’s beliefs and world view. It is out of love that one can have a listening ear to get to know about the feeling of the other person. Additionally, the concept of patience comes in handy for the nurse to be able to spare enough time for each patient and listen carefully to their views and perception. The compassion is also important as it guides the nurse to be able to put oneself into the patient’s situation and be able to observe it from the patient’s dimension hence improve on healthcare.

Development of the Future Practice

The word view and the nursing theory are instrumental in shaping my future development as a nurse. This will help me in the setting up of evidence based practice projects that aim to address the issues of love, compassion, patience and respect in the nursing profession. This will be key to the improvement of my career as a nurse and do extensive research on the same issues to help promote patient’s safety and outcomes. Additionally, the concepts will be instrumental in tackling the day to day challenges in the nursing practice key among them being the handling of workplace incivility. The knowledge learnt and skills acquired will help in the development of proper workplace communication, foster better understanding and respect for one another hence collaboration and better patient outcome.

Worldview and Nursing Process

Personal worldviews have a direct effect on the care that nurses provide to their patients. A worldview refers to the collection of aspects such as values, attitudes, beliefs, and expectations of our surrounding world. A worldview forms the philosophy of nurses in their practice. It guides nurses in making ethical and legal decisions in patient care. Worldviews differ from one person to another. The difference is attributable to the influence of factors such as culture, socialization, and individual social and professional practices. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explore my personal worldview, a nursing theory that relates to it and their influence on my professional nursing practice.

Personal Worldview

My worldview revolves around being empathetic with others and respecting their needs. I believe that nurses should be empathetic to their patients and others. They should place themselves in the experiences of their patients as well as others they interact with in their professional and personal lives. I also believe that nurses should show love to others. They should demonstrate behaviors such as respecting diversity, being honest and truthful in their personal and professional lives. I also believe that nurses should offer patient care with love. The symbols of love that should guide the care given to patients should encompass aspects such as patience, understanding, respect, honesty, and openness (Munoz-Day, 2019). By showing love, nurses learn to treat others the same manner in which they wish to be treated too.

I also believe that nurses should be kind in their practice and personal lives. Kindness is a virtue that entails being considerate or generous to others. Nurses should show kindness to their patients. It is important in nursing practice, as it enhances patient engagement in the care process. Kindness in nursing entails providing patient-centered and compassionate care to the patient (Yeşilçınar et al., 2018). The incorporation of kindness into the care process results in patient satisfaction with the care as well as empowerment with the disease management process. For example, the empowerment of patients results in their increased treatment adherence and engagement in self-management behaviors that improve the outcomes of treatment for their health problems (Ng & Luk, 2019). By being considerate of the healthcare needs of the patients, nurses can develop accurate plans of care that addresses both the actual and potential health needs of the patients. Therefore, kindness, love, and being truthful should guide the practice of nurses in patient care.

My worldview on religion is that nursing practice should entail the consideration of the religious beliefs and practices of patients. Nurses should ensure that the religious preferences of the patients are considered, as they influence the experiences of patients with the care process. The consideration contributes to holism in patient care for optimum outcomes. Similarly, care should encompass the spiritual and cultural values and beliefs of the patients. The cultural values and beliefs of great importance to the patients should be prioritized in the provision of patient care, as they influence the uptake of specific care services (Yeşilçınar et al., 2018). Therefore, I believe that religion, spirituality, and culture are important elements that should be considered in the provision of patient care.

Nursing Theory

Orem’s theory of self-care resonates with my nursing philosophy. The self-care theory by Orem asserts that nurses play a critical role in helping patients achieve their self-care needs. They assist patients who do not have the power or will to engage in activities that contribute to the realization of their daily needs. The activities or support that the nurse gives to the patients aim at maintaining their lives or functioning and correct the deviation of their health to normal. Orem also asserted that the support from the nurse aims at ensuring that the incapability of the patients in meeting their self-care needs is addressed (Gligor & Domnariu, 2020). Through it, the nurse and patients form a therapeutic relationship that contributes to the establishment of supportive system needed to compensate the needs of the patients either partially or wholly.

A number of similarities exist between Orem’s self-care theory with my worldview. The first similarity is the importance of therapeutic relationship between the nurse and patients. The relationship contributes to the understanding of the actual and potential care needs of the patients (Younas, 2017). I believe that nurses should strive to form positive, therapeutic relationship with their patients to understand their needs better. The understanding forms the basis of the empathetic, loving relationship that culminates to the realization of optimum outcomes in patient care. The other similarity between Orem’s theory and my worldview is the recognition of the critical role of the nurses in assisting patients to achieve their self-care needs. The nurse assists patients who lack will and energy to meet their diverse health-related needs (Gligor & Domnariu, 2020). I also believe in helping patients to achieve their diverse needs. The help offered should take into consideration the uniqueness and abilities of the patients in achieving the desired self-care. In helping the patients, nurses should demonstrate respect, kindness, love, and understanding to their patients.

Orem’s theory reinforces my approach to patient care. Firstly, it provides me with the understanding of the assumptions that guide my interaction with the patients. For example, I approach patients with the assumption that they need assistance in achieving their diverse self-care needs. Orem’s theory also provides me with benchmarks for evaluating the effectiveness of patient care. The evaluation informs the need for additional interventions should the anticipated care needs are not met. An example can be seen from the use of the universal self-care outcomes to evaluate the effectiveness of the care interventions that were adopted to address the care needs of the patients (Younas & Quennell, 2019). Lastly, Orem’s theory influences the nature of relationship I have with my patients. I strive to understand the actual and potential health needs of the patients during my interaction with them. The understanding informs the development of the appropriate treatment plans to optimize the care outcomes.

Example

An example of a recent experience where my worldview could have been applied is an encounter with a patient who did not want his child to a blood transfusion. The patient declined with the assertion that blood transfusion was against their religious beliefs and practices. The nurse and physician attending the child insisted that the child needed blood transfusion for him to live. This led to significant irritation and confrontation by the parent. My worldview could have been applied to the scenario. I would have aimed at understanding the concerns about blood transfusion and explaining to the parent its importance. I would have also demonstrated kindness by involving him in examining the different alternatives that existed and their benefits and risks. Through it, the parent could have made an informed decision about the need for blood transfusion for his child.

Influence of Nursing Theory and Worldview on my Future Practice

My worldview and Orem’s theory of nursing will assist me in developing my future practice. The worldview and theory will inform my future relations with my patients and other healthcare providers. They will strengthen my desire for improving my inter-personal and professional relationship skills to ensure that I address optimally the care needs of those I serve (Antonytheva et al., 2021). The worldview and theory will also influence my future practice by increasing my involvement in areas such as research in nursing. The worldview and theory will increase my awareness about the various aspects of nursing that influence patient care. The awareness will stimulate my interest in exploring the ways in which nursing research can inform evidence-based practice. Through it, I will be able to support the use of research and evidence-informed decisions in the provision of patient care (Munoz-Day, 2019). Therefore, I believe that my worldview and self-care theory by Orem will inform my future practice as a registered nurse.

Conclusion

In summary, worldview is an important aspect in nursing practice. A worldview informs the actions and decisions that nurses make in their daily practice. My worldview revolves around love, kindness, empathy, and being truthful to others. My worldview relates to self-care theory by Dorothea Orem. It recognizes the need for understanding and helping others achieve their needs in a manner that respects their values, beliefs, and practices. My worldview and theory will influence my future practice as a registered nurse. They will influence the relationship I have with the patients as well as my level of awareness about the different issues affecting nursing practice and patient care.
