Envision Healthcare has a program called evolution Health that focuses on building a better home care experience for their patients who have recently been discharged from a hospital. According to Evolution Health’s mission statement they “focus on hiring compassionate, highly experienced clinicians and empowering them with evidence-based clinical protocols, we deliver better outcomes, fewer re-hospitalizations and higher patient satisfaction” (Evolution Health, 2020). This organization prides themselves on delivering the highest care to their patients in a home care setting through collaboration from hospitals and the patients’ primary care providers. Through this collaboration, patients are able to have decreased 30-day re-admission rates among high-risk Medicare patients (Roepers et al, 2017). This innovative model affects interprofessional collaboration because all members of the team work together for the benefit of the patients. This organization has a medical command center (MCC) and a mobile integrated team (MIT) that are both available 24/7 for coordinating resources and managing the health of the patient. The ability to treat and manage patients through telemedicine can decrease the overall cost of patients’ long-term admissions and potentially re-admissions for more complex recurrent medical issues.

The differences according to Lucia (2018) between a good manager and a good leader stands at the intersection of skills, strategic thinking and ethical integrity specific to the manager and the emotional intelligence, power of persuasion, empathy, passion and open communication specific to the leaderAdvanced practice nurse’s (APRN) can be placed into director positions at different levels within an organization. Within the managed care population, APRN’s have served as director of sector. For example, this may be in population health with the director having oversight of a large area either at a state, regional or corporate level. What I have seen personally is APRN’s set the tone for organizational business goal, provide details to that goal, statistics and then continue to push for that goal throughout upcoming months most often done in team huddles providing updates. In the past I led a team of 13 case managers. The entire department (statewide) was tasked to increase care plan production and meet metrics. The initial step was done as a company meeting. I followed up with a team meeting breaking down what each step meant and how I would be working with each of them at a team level and individually. This was a huge push on our stakeholders end to provide robust and lengthy care plans and it involved utilizing our systems in a way the team wasn’t accustomed to. I took time to listen to my teams’ concerns, set up training sessions, meet individually with each case manager and spend additional time with anyone who requested it. In many ways I like to take servant leadership and utilize this as my format as Neville, et al. (2021) states it is to help first then lead by example. This was true in my role as time to time I had to take on a case and took the time to incorporate what I taught and use mine and other case managers work as examples. Other tools servant leaders utilize is listening, empathy and persuasion. In persuasion it is a matter of providing the education and support rather than using your power of position (Neville, et al. 2021) to meet the organizational goals.

Christian values are essential to embody in all aspects of life. While GCU utilizes these values as a foundational component for educational standards, these should also be standard for how students are influenced in their academic performance as well. Academic dishonesty, which is the opposite of academic integrity, plagues all academic levels. There are several reasons why I think students are tempted into dishonesty including pressure for success, lack of understanding about what constitutes plagiarism, and not fully understanding the entire process of academia. Integrity is the intrinsic belief to do the right thing even when no one is watching and is an essential value of the Christian doctrine. When students believe and practice integrity, they will be able to apply this outside of the classroom and to other aspects of life. If students are engaging in academic dishonesty, this may be suggestive of a lack of integrity outside of the classroom as well. Lack of integrity is one example of the brokenness seen in society today. It shows a desire for success regardless of the means to get there or if there was any actual self-growth in the achievement of success. Having an educational infrastructure based on Christian values will not only foster academic success but will support students to apply these values beyond the classroom and become a part of their daily lives.

Nurses are actively involved in policy advocacy as part of their humane and professional mandate. Nursing advocacy is distinguished by the representation of patients, nurses’ needs, or the profession as a whole. Nurses are involved in the legislative process in critical cases to ensure that their proposals have legal and political support. However, the process is not going as smoothly as planned or expected. Individuals with opposing viewpoints and retaliation are common barriers. Jurns (2019) went on to say that a lack of adequate information about policy creation is usually a barrier to success. Because of these obstacles, nurses can use a variety of strategies to represent the advanced registered nurse as leaders and patient advocates.

When policymakers challenge barriers rather than avoiding them, they are effectively resisted and overcome. A good example is when nurses or other policy promoters use their professional knowledge and understanding of concepts to persuade people with opposing viewpoints to change their minds. Reconciliation is essential for reaching a consensus that benefits patients, nurses, and the health care system as a whole. According to Safari et al. (2020), nurses involved in health and legislative policies should not participate in health policy-making activities at a moderate level. As a result, they must understand the legislative process and act correctly while overcoming all obstacles. Approaching situations with an open mind is also recommended to reduce the likelihood of conflict.

In any case, depending on the policy and advocacy team, the legislative process faces numerous challenges. Nurses should be mentally and physically prepared to face a variety of challenges. Resilience is essential, and a thorough understanding of the legislative and policymaking processes is also required.

Course Description

This course examines the role of leadership, organizational science, policy, and informatics in supporting safe,
high-quality, cost-effective patient care within inter-professional, dynamic health care environments. Learners explore various organizational relationships within health care systems and prepare to participate in the design of cost-effective, innovative models of care delivery and practice change proposals. Professional leadership theories and how they shape the nurse leader in such things as collaboration, conflict resolution, decision-making, and negotiation are introduced.
Learners discuss change management theories and evaluate the ethical, social, legal, economic, and political implications of practice change and health care informatics along with strategies for managing human, fiscal, and health care resources in a variety of organizational systems. Learners also examine the uses of patient-care, information systems, and communication technologies and discuss the design, implementation, and evaluation of electronic health record systems and clinical decision support systems.

NUR-514 Course Objectives


In this course, the learner will:

  1. Explore various health care system and organizational relationships (e.g., stakeholders, economic, financial, political, ethical issues, organizational structure, and delivery of care, including mission/vision/philosophy and values).
    2. Discuss professional leadership theories and how they shape the nurse leader in such things as collaboration, conflict resolution, decision making, and negotiation.

The American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA) was founded in 1982 and was initially known as Capital Area Roundtable on Informatics in Nursing (CARING). The organization focuses on providing resources, education, and networking in all fields of nursing informatics. The ANIA partners with other healthcare informatics organizations, like American Medical Informatics Association, Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, and The Alliance for Nursing Informatics, to support the nursing informatics community. For networking, ANIA Connect is an online setting that allows informatics nurses to connect with other informatics professionals in many different ways. The website is divided into multiple sections: announcements, quick links, latest discussions, chapter and group events, and news. The quick links have allowed anyone to post a message on the discussion board to share their interest and goals. I have seen the latest post from a current master’s student looking for a nurse informatics preceptor who lives in Portland, OR; for further details of the post, one must have become a member to access in-depth information. The other way to connect with the nursing informatics profession is that you can also have opportunities to expand your professional network by joining their annual ANIA conference and local and state ANIA meetings. Overall, the ANIA website is an excellent resource for all professionals interested in nursing informatics to use for education and networking in all fields related to nursing informatics.
