DQ1 How have you seen or experienced organizational change within an organization? Did it go well or not? Was there any correlation in how the organizations used stakeholders or change models?

There are many different theories that explain the phases of change and how it affects the individuals that are part of the change. The theory of Lewin’s three-step change model includes the steps of unfreezing, moving, and freezing (Burnes, 2019). In the implementation of change, the three steps of Lewin’s theory can be adapted to any situation. For example, in a place of work, the first step can be identified as the unfreezing step which is when employees become aware of the need for change (Memon et al., 2021). In this stage, the barriers are identified and the effort for change gets started. The second step is known as movement and this step can be successful if there is active communication and teamwork. During the moving step, the change is implemented within the organization by guiding the employees and supporting them (Memon et al., 2021). Lastly, the refreezing stage sets the new changes permanent within the organization and the employees are engaging in the changing process (Memon et al., 2021). For example, in my place of work, there are constant changes to the policy of infection prevention during direct patient care. The need for modification is identified by the infection control department and the changes to implement are the type of required mask to prevent the spread of respiratory diseases such as COVID-19, Influenza, and the common cold. The employees are part of the implementation by wearing the mask and assisting others to remember to always wear their masks. Lastly, the changes are permanent or until the need for change arises to prevent the spread of infection. The stakeholders are individuals that are affected by the change or become part of the change in my place of employment. The employees and the employer are part of the stakeholders.

The American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA) has numerous resources for nurses that work in informatics. Like many other nursing associations, there are benefits to being a member. On the home page for ANIA, it states that being a member provides resources such as access to the journal of informatics nursing, networking within the specialty, posting for informatic nursing jobs, and discounts on other valuable organizations to build careers in informatics (American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA, 2021). To support informatics nurses, the organization partners with leading organizations such as American Medical Informatics, The alliance for nursing informatics, Vanderbilt, Philips, and Ebsco Health (ANIA, 2021). By partnering with leading organizations in nursing, the ANIA can provide educational, research, and innovation opportunities and networking. Finally, the organization offers a certification review course for the Informatics Nurse certification from the ANCC. Overall, advanced practice nurses need to join an association related to their field to expand their knowledge and collaborate with others within the community.

DQ2 You have been selected to serve on a community outreach committee within your state’s nursing organization. The committee includes registered nurses of different specialties. At your first meeting, it becomes evident that not everyone is in agreement with a recent position statement about the role of spiritual care, with some members arguing they will no longer support the committee if the position statement is not revised or reversed. As a nurse leader, how could you draw from change theory to address these concerns and encourage collaboration on the committee?

The fact that not everyone is in agreement with a position statement already creates a sense of urgency in proposing or making a change which is step one of the Kotter 8-step change model. As a nurse leader or someone from management, I can initiate the need to identify and propose the change and prepare the committee to cooperate and participate in the change. This is also where the reason or rationale of the proposed change be clearly communicated to the group. The next step is putting a team together to work on the proposal for change. A team of diverse individuals from different levels or professions or in this case from different specialties, would be ideal so each group or voice will be represented. This will also help cultivate trust and commitment from all levels. The 3rd step will be to develop a mission, vision, and strategies for change. What are we trying to achieve in making the change? In this scenario, it will be to ensure that the committee position will be supported by all its committee members and encourage collaboration within. What strategies are we going to use to realize the goals? Some proposals may include deliberation, debate, election, and open discussion of issues and concerns before coming up with a position statement. The 4th step will be to identify your resources and barriers to change. Encourage members to provide feedback. In step 5, the team is now ready to develop a plan. Step 6 will be plan implementation. In step 7, it would be necessary to acknowledge small successes and celebrate. This will encourage the team to continue to strive harder and work collaboratively towards the vision. Evaluating outcomes and refining your plan. Determine what worked well and what went wrong. The last step is creating a culture where this change is sustained and becomes the new norm. In this situation, although I may not be able to predict what will work in addressing the committee’s concerns, however, if these steps were to be followed along with the buy-in of the entire committee, they will come up with a consensus and a process to address similar issues in the future (DeNisco, 2021).

Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).

Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.

APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).

Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.

I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.

As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.

It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.

Late Policy

The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.

Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.

If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.

I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.

As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.
