NUR 740 Discussion 4.1: Patient Protection Affordable Care Act (PPACA) Interview

Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is among the groundbreaking health policies ever to be implemented by the United States federal government in the recent era. The act obliges nurses to carry on healthcare technological advancement, transformation leadership, and collaborative care as principal partners/factors in the delivery of the new age of cost containment, accessible care, and quality advancements (Bong, 2019). In the current case, a nursing administrator performing in one of the medium-sized urban-based hospitals in Nevada was interviewed in relation to the recently implemented PPACA healthcare reform countrywide. During the interview process, the interviewee responded to a set of questions aimed at inquiring about her perceptions and insights into the notion of PPACA, its realistic implementation by the nurses, and potential reforms to improve the outcomes of the policy.

Based on the results of the interview, the interviewee noted her precise viewpoints and understanding of the subsequent policy. For instance, she indicated that PPACA is a revolutionary health reform that aims to address three integral public health issues such as reduced cost of care, improved care quality, and enhanced access to medical care. According to her, the policy challenges nurses to respond to or advocate for the pre-existing transformations in the context of healthcare practices with a sense of professional and innovative responsibilities. As principal crusaders of better healthcare reforms, nurses have major roles to play in order to support and positively impact the implementation of the PPACA countrywide.

The interviewee expressed that while the PPACA policy is currently impactful in fostering better health and wellbeing of the public, she indicated that the policy could be further reformed to warrant its greatest implications on the patients’ health. For instance, she indicated that the policy could be altered to allow the state nursing boards to increase their intakes or employment of nurses to meet the rising healthcare demands of the surging patient population nationwide. Throughout the interview, there were no misconception concerns brought out by the patient. Noteworthy, the outcomes of the interview offered me adequate insights into the potential roles of nurses as both implementers and advocates of public health reforms (Zahnd et al., 2020).

Hello Romina.

aims to address three integral public health issues such as reduced cost of care, improved care quality, and enhanced access to medical care (Feder et al., 2017). The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as “Obamacare”, is a revolutionary health reform that was signed into law in 2010. The goal of the PPACA is to make healthcare more affordable and accessible for all Americans (Barlas, 2017). Before the PPACA was enacted, millions of Americans were without health insurance coverage. This meant that they could not access quality medical care when they needed it. The PPACA addresses this problem by requiring all Americans to have health insurance coverage (Labrum et al., 2017). The PPACA also makes healthcare more affordable by providing financial assistance to those who need it. For example, the act provides subsidies to low-income individuals and families to help them pay for their premiums.

President Obama coined the term “Obamacare” during his presidency to describe a healthcare reform act that would make healthcare more accessible. This act was passed by Congress in 2010 and is currently known as The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). I interviewed my manager for this assignment. She is the program director of an outpatient dermatology clinic. The following details her explanation of the PPACA. The PPACA was legislation focused on extending health insurance coverage to more Americans through passing a series of policies. Some positive notable outcomes included young adults staying on a parent’s insurance plan until age 26 and insurance companies not denying individuals with preexisting conditions. The PPACA also expanded Medicaid insurance throughout the United States. Upon further research, Medicaid expansion is currently optional after a Supreme Court ruling (Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission, 2022). Illinois, where we are located, did accept the PPACA’s guidelines for Medicaid expansion (Norris, 2022). Our office accepts a wide range of government insurance plans such as Governmental Advantage Plans, Medicare Advantage Plans, Medicare/Medicaid Alignment Initiative Agreements, Medicaid Managed Care Programs/HealthChoice Illinois. It is also important for our office because a large service we offer patients is skin cancer screenings which falls under preventative services. In her opinion, this is the best advantage of the PPACA. Patients can receive screenings to catch diseases earlier and will therefore get treatment sooner. The focus of any healthcare policy should be patient health. Advanced practice nurses (APNs) will be able to use the policies enacted in the PPACA to give more comprehensive care to a wider range of patients. She recommends all healthcare professionals, including APNs, get involved in local and national politics to help enact the changes they want to see in their healthcare. She also states APNs can choose to work in an office or location that supports the healthcare policies they are passionate about. For example, there are free clinics or institutions that serve a large population of Medicare/Medicaid patients. Overall, the PPACA has improved healthcare access across the United States.
