Ion Channels and G Proteins

Ion channels are integral membrane proteins that allow inorganic ions of appropriate size and charge to pass through the otherwise impermeable lipid cell membrane. G proteins on the other hand act as molecular switches inside cells and are involved in stimuli signal transmission from outside cells to their interior. In terms of signal transduction, ion channels alter membrane potential and ion concentrations in response to signals from outside the cells (Manolios et al., 2023). Hence, ion channels directly control ion flow in response to signals. G proteins on the other hand influence cellular responses by transmitting signals to intracellular pathways. Hence, according to Jiang et al. (2022), G proteins transduce extracellular signals by either activating or inhibiting downstream signaling pathways meaning they act as intermediaries between cell surface receptors and signaling pathways in the cell.

In terms of targets of medications, drugs can directly affect ion channel function by binding to the channel protein and altering the function. Hence drugs directly modulate the activity of ion channels and this mechanism is used to treat diverse medical conditions. On the other hand, drugs can affect G proteins mainly indirectly by binding to components of G protein signaling to modulate cellular responses (Mantas et al., 2021). Drugs can also affect G proteins directly by binding to G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), altering their responses, and causing the inhibition or activation of the involved G proteins.
