Discussion 2: AACN Competencies and the Walden Mission, Vision, and Outcomes
According to a Gallup poll completed in 2013, 82% of respondents indicated that they believe nurses have high to very high levels of honesty and ethical standards, and nursing has been rated as the most trusted profession for several years (Gallup, 2010). What other values and characteristics are associated with the nursing profession? Which ones are the most professionally, academically, and personally significant to you?
For this Discussion 2: AACN Competencies and the Walden Mission, Vision, and Outcomes Discussion, you will consider the alignment of qualities outlined by the AACN with those promoted by Walden University.
You will examine the AACN document appropriate for your degree path and consider how you can incorporate either the Essentials or the Quality Indicators into your academic endeavors.
To prepare:
- Consider the competencies presented in The Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice (for DNP students)or The Research-Focused Doctoral Program in Nursing: Pathways to Excellence (for PhD students)in this week’s Learning Resources.
- Examine Walden University’s mission, vision, and university outcomes.
- Review the media presentation Introduction: The Doctor of Nursing Practice, which includes Dr. Joan Stanley’s comments about the AACN’s vision for the DNP degree.
- Identify commonalities among the concepts presented in each of these items.
- Think about your professional and academic goals. Consider how Walden’s standpoint and the AACN’s perspective fit with your objectives. Based on this information, what ideas do you have for incorporating a commitment to social change into your academic and professional plans?

Sample Answer for NURS 8000 WEEK 2 Discussion 2 : AACN Competencies and the Walden Mission, Vision, and Outcomes
In a diverse healthcare system, there is a need for a diverse nursing workforce to match our communities’ needs. In a diverse community, having a culturally competent nursing workforce will promote effective health care and will lead to better patient outcomes for patients from the minority groups (Gates, 2018). Research shows that racial/ethnic minority populations have poor health outcomes from preventable or treatable diseases and there are differences in access to care and the quality of care for this population. Having a culturally competent nursing workforce will help reduce health disparities and bridge the barriers through a culturally sensitive approach when communicating with people with limited proficiency English or low health literacy. (Jackson and Gracia, 2014).
Walden’s vision, mission and goals highlight the importance of having a diverse graduate community that will apply their learnings to transform critical challenges and impact positive social change. (Walden University, 2021). American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) seventh (VII) Essential competency for Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), also highlights the importance of cultural diversity and sensitivity of the DNP graduates to improve population’s health through “Clinical Prevention and Population Health.”(AACN, 2006, p.15). Dr Susan Stefan stated that a DNP program will prepare nurses to become the “change agent” (Laureate Education, 2011). Through a culturally diverse nursing workforce we will be able to reach out to a diverse community, addressing health disparities and improving their health.
Having 30+ years of nursing experience, mentoring nurses and developing nurse leaders became my passion. I have been invited as a guest speaker in the past to a few colleges to inspire minorities and students from non-native English speaking countries and it was very rewarding to meet and talk with them. In addition, the peak as a graduate student for me was to participate with my mentor to present at the International nurse conference GANES in Washington DC. My main professional and personal goal will be to become a speaker about mentoring at more nursing conferences, continuing to inspire more nurses, in particular minority nurses. Pate (2011) talked about the simple steps one can take to educate and mentor nurse leaders in ambulatory care and that made me realize I am already doing a lot of those steps. Talking about mentoring can only move our nursing profession forward and inspire more hesitant leaders to become one. This goal will be in congruence with one of the outcomes Walden University promotes: for one to use their “knowledge to positively impact their profession, communities and society.” (Walden University, 2021, p.10).
Another goal of mine is to become a stronger advocate for higher educated nurses. I find that organizations do not always encourage nurses to seek higher degrees. By having bachelor or graduate prepared nurses, we improve patient safety and outcomes while promoting and enhancing our profession. This will align with Walden University’s goal to become agents of positive change for patients as well as for our nursing profession. (Walden University, 2021, p.10).
