In order to meet the needs of our communities, a diverse health care system needs a diverse nursing staff. In a diverse community, having a nursing staff that is culturally competent will make health care more effective and help people from minority groups do better. (Gates, 2018). Research shows that people from racial or ethnic minorities have worse health outcomes from diseases that can be prevented or treated. This population also has different access to care and different quality of care. Having a nursing staff that is culturally competent will help reduce health disparities and break down barriers by using a culturally sensitive approach when talking to people who don’t speak English well or who don’t know much about health. 2014 by Jackson and Gracia).

The vision, mission, and goals of Walden show how important it is to have a diverse group of graduates who will use what they’ve learned to solve important problems and make positive changes in society. (Walden University in 2021). The seventh (VII) Essential Competency for Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) also talks about how important cultural diversity and sensitivity are for DNP graduates to improve the health of the population through “Clinical Prevention and Population Health.” (AACN, 2006, p.15). Having worked as a nurse for more than 30 years, I became very interested in helping other nurses and creating nurse leaders. I have been a guest speaker at a few colleges in the past to encourage students from minority groups and countries where English is not the first language. The AACN developed the DNP essentials, which define the elements and competencies that the curriculum for a degree in Doctor of Nursing Practice must have. As the nursing profession evolves and influences decisions related to public policy and population health, advanced practice nurses require education to provide credibility at the highest practice levels (Laureate Education, 2011b). The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) guides how graduate nurses should be educated concerning quality and safety, transitions of care, cost benefits, and patient outcomes (Laureate Education, 2011b). The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and the PhD-educated nurses must work together to advance the nursing practice (Laureate Education, 2011b).

The purpose of the second discussion in week two asks the doctoral student to explore how the mission and vision of Walden University are related to the AACN competencies and academic goals. The AACN competencies of evidence-based practice meet these goals, systems thinking, quality improvement, use of technology, and advocacy; will provide the tools to enact meaningful social change for the good (AACN, 2006).

The writer’s academic goals embody these elements for the greater social good at the highest nursing leadership level. As the healthcare environment becomes more complex and the need for positive outcomes, cost control, and quality increase, the writer, has determined to progress in the healthcare system. An advanced nursing degree is required (Zaccagnini & Pehacek, 2021). One example is navigating through the Covid-19 pandemic as a master’s prepared nurse. The writer uses all these current skills, such as systems management and current evidence, to ensure that staff members and hemodialysis patients are safe and cared for in a quality environment. As a manager, the writer’s primary goal is to provide patient-centered care where there is no transmission of Covid-19 to patients or staff members. As an advanced practice nurse with a DNP, the writer would like to create solutions for social change issues from a policy and advocacy perspective. Utilizing skills working with governments and institutions to develop frameworks to deliver healthcare to determine that practice regulation, safety, and quality requirements are being met (AACN, 2006).

Plans for Incorporation of Social Change into Academic Goals

To incorporate social change into academic goals, the writer will implement the ability to advocate for health care policies that ensure that government is “addressing issues of social justice and equity in health care” (AACN, 2006, p.13).
