Building on what you have said, I would add that the AACN has worked hard to refine NP Core Competencies so as to reflect the most up to date requirements for the current state of healthcare (Chan, Lockhart, Schreiber, & Kronk, 2020).  The goal is to ensure that DNP students gain highly specific skills sets that evolve from Competency Based Education (CBE) as set forth by the Domains of Nursing or observable and measurable aspects of performance that allows the student to demonstrate competent, fully functional abilities in order to provide safe, quality care to a wide variety of patient populations, while promoting social justice and equality in medicine (Chan et al., 2020).  Graduates of DNP programs possess the evidenced-based knowledge, practical experience, and professional attitudes necessary to advocate and facilitate changes that will shape future healthcare policies (Mullin, 2019).

The attainment of social justice and equity in healthcare is a lofty goal, but it doesn’t have to be “pie in the sky”.  DNP graduates need to cultivate leadership skills that entitle them to pull up a chair and sit at the big table where the crucial decisions that affect nursing and medical practice are rolled out (Mullin, 2019).  This will allow nursing representatives to have an influential voice in political decision making and social change policies where it has the greatest impact on professional nursing (Mullin, 2019).  DNP graduates should be the gold standard in Advanced Nursing Practice because as leaders in the field there is no area of institutional, local, state, regional, and federal politics where knowledge of health policy, expert experience in evidenced-based research, and influential advocacy in practice cannot serve to promote proactive development and implementation of social change policy for the betterment of society and population health (Mullin, 2019).

In our globally connected environment barriers that once existed due to geographical location have been greatly reduced by technology. While technology has reduced geographic barriers allowing communication across the world in seconds, other barriers remain persistent. Healthcare inequities have led to an increased focus on social change and organizational reform (Peprah et al., 2021). As healthcare and health in general see great advancements, certain population groups have disproportionately bad outcomes (Austin & Fell, 2020). These outcomes point to a need to continually focus on social change in healthcare. Walden University is focused on leveling the playing field and encouraging students to invest in the world. The AACN identifies goals for the Doctor of nursing practice (DNP) and these align with Walden University in Mission, Vision and Outcome. I am personally interested in the healthcare culture. To me this means how we treat those whom we care for and those we work with. All too often I hear patients who say they will do whatever the doctor tells them. This is a risk, and it is the role of the nurse to ensure patients know to ask questions and ensure they understand as much as they can. While I trust in humankind not all risks are worth taking. Positive social change is a major goal of Walden University (Vision, Mission, and Goals – Walden University – Acalog ACMS^TM, n.d.). An aim of the AACN is to ensure organizational change to meet the needs of those impacted by the DNP (DNP Essentials, n.d.). AACN, Walden and I all agree social change is crucial and is within the boundaries of my DNP journey.

My main professional goal is to join academia as a nursing professor. I tell everyone I meet about the great profession of nursing. Few professions allow the flexibility and impact that nursing offers. This is a calling that can moves mountains. As my career has progressed my passion to educate seasoned nurses has also grown.
