In a diverse healthcare system, there is a need for a diverse nursing workforce to match our communities’ needs. Research shows that racial/ethnic minority populations have poor health outcomes from preventable or treatable diseases and there are differences in access to care and the quality of care for this population. Having a culturally competent nursing workforce will help reduce health disparities and bridge the barriers through a culturally sensitive approach when communicating with people with limited proficiency English or low health literacy.
