Our hospital being a small-community one, is like a big family, so people will cover for them, sort of off the record. However, when they are off the unit, we are out of compliance with your nurse/patient ratios and on busy days it can be pretty challenging to let them go several times a day. One of our doctors flies from Illinois one week/month and works a 7-day stretch. Her husband comes with her because they have a 6-month old baby. He brings the baby to the hospital several times/day for her to nurse. They make it work, but it is such a challenge. Life while our children are infants is already so challenging with sleep deprivation and it is a shame that trying to make breastfeeding work can be so hard for some working mothers.

I think changing the culture about breastfeeding in public to make it the norm would be a very difficult thing to accomplish. I feel that there are so many people who are the extreme opposite sides of this issue, that making it the norm would be very hard to accomplish. I personally have breastfed all of my children. However, I have never once done it in public without covering up. Some people can breastfeed without exposing much, while others to not. I certainly fall into the second category and there is no way to not expose my breast if I am breastfeeding. I think breastfeeding is a natural experience, however, I also understand that when someone is out shopping, out to eat, or out in public, that they should have the right to not watch someone breastfeed.

When we went to Universal Studios there were designated places to breastfeed and they were all shown on the map. This was great for me because it helped me to plan my day. I think for starters, places should all have a place where mother’s can breastfeed in private. Nothing is more frustrating than being out in public and not having a place to go where I can have some privacy. This could be the first step. Or even having an area in the building with chairs and a sink where people could breastfeed could help promote breastfeeding as well. From my experience, this sounds sad to say but if young women saw celebrates like Kim Kardashian breastfeeding, they would be more likely to breastfeed, and it would be viewed as the norm because they would want to be like her and they would view that as the thing to do.

NOTE: To receive credit for a week’s discussion, students may begin posting no earlier than the Sunday immediately before each week opens. Unless otherwise specified, access to most weeks begins on Sunday at 12:01 a.m. MT, and that week’s assignments are due by the next Sunday by 11:59 pm MT. *Scholarly source: Per the APA Guidelines in Course Resources, only scholarly sources should be used in assignments and threaded discussions. These include peer reviewed publications, government reports, or sources written by a professional or scholar in the field. Your textbook and lesson are not considered to be an outside scholarly source. For the discussions, reputable internet sources such as websites by government agencies (URL ends in .gov) and respected organizations (often ends in .org) can be counted as scholarly sources. The best outside scholarly source to use is a peer reviewed nursing journal. You are encouraged to use the Chamberlain library and search one of the available data bases for a peer reviewed journal article. The following sources should not be used: Wikipedia, Wikis, or blogs. These web sites are not considered scholarly as anyone can add to these. Please be aware that .com websites can vary in scholarship and quality. For example American Heart Association is a .com site with scholarship and quality. It is the responsibility of the student to determine the scholarship and quality of any .com site. Ask your instructor before using any site that you are unsure of. If the instructor determines that the site does not demonstrate scholarship or quality, points will be deducted for not using scholarly sources. Current outside scholarly sources are required for the initial posting. This is defined to be 5 years or less. Instructor permission must be obtained if using a source that is older than 5 years.
