This article explores the significance of pharmacotherapy in the treatment of mental diseases in older people. It is crucial to acknowledge the distinct obstacles associated with the use of psychotropic drugs in this demographic. Further investigation is required to formulate enhanced therapeutic approaches for elderly individuals afflicted with mental disorders such as issues focusing on clinical drugs administered to elderly patients within FDA approved standard dosage and how it affects patients, the elder ones in particular having different levels of side effects and sensitivity to certain medications on different psychotropic drugs

International Psychogeriatrics focuses on three different psychotropic medications for bipolar disorder patients, treatments for delirium, and patients with dementia. Conducting studies by Renzenbrink and Wand (2022) shows 128 patients tested between the ages of 65-86 years had certain reactions such as seizures, delirium, orthostatic hypotension, and other symptoms of anticholigernic side effects affecting behavior, impaired memory, and reduced cognitive function.

Salzman (2022) also suggested lowest possible effective dosage and drugs of antipsychotic medications to help minimize side effects on elderly patients, and the need to discuss with families and/or guardians of patients the pros and cons of medications with their knowledge and permission.

SDM (Shared Decision Making) is vital in healthcare field, the idea of sharing information within healthcare staff, families and/or guardians, and patient will help address specific issues and provide more accurate and essential care all factors in to achieve a concrete decision in providing treatments to the patients. Statistics in 2023 shows mental illness has become more common due to several environmental factors affecting a person’s mental stability and policy makers need to support more research on psychiatric and pharmacological needs to rehabilitate our elderly patients that helps them restore their mental and physical health.
