Week 4 | Part 3: Research Analysis

Access to mental health care among Americans in rural areas remains a critical challenge due to several barriers. Reports show that 1 in 25 Americans has a serious mental illness (SMI) in any year (Morales et al., 2021). However, people living in rural parts of the United States are more likely to experience mental illness and encounter serious and distinct access barriers to getting treatment. Three critical obstacles to mental health care for these populations include availability, accessibility and acceptability Graham et al., 2020). In this part of the template, I explore my topic of interest and discuss an identified peer-reviewed article concerning the issue and analyze it. The second step entails a summary of the analysis and the strategies used as well as recommending an appropriate database.

The article demonstrates the critical role of improving access and availability of mental health services in rural areas. The article shows that providers and healthcare organizations can improve access and availability of mental health care in rural areas using telehealth as a growing healthcare technology (Crumb et al., 2019). Therefore, I would recommend this article to help improve mental health accessibility for mental health providers and stakeholders.

Step 2: Summary of Analysis

 

Analyzing a peer-reviewed article is important to identify care aspects under study in research. My approach to the identification and analysis of peer-reviewed research entailed focusing on critical issues affecting millions of Americans. Again, I ensured that I isolate current articles based on CRAAP model; current, relevant, accurate, authoritative and purposeful.

Finding peer-reviewed research requires one to employ effective strategies. Imperatively, the two strategies that I will use which were effective in this case include employing right words and using Boolean operators. The operators ensure that one gets results based on their search words and terms. Using the right words ensures that only relevant sources come up for analysis (Crumb et al., 2019). The resources that I intend to utilize in future to get peer-reviewed research are databases found in Walden University’s library. The library is a critical resource since it has different nursing and health care databases like CINAHL, PubMed, and Cochrane among others.

Conclusion

Research analysis is an essential part of completing an MSN program. As such, nurse students need to use the opportunity to enhance their critical thinking skills as well as analytical abilities. Limited access to healthcare remains a critical challenge to care provision, especially access to mental health in rural areas. The selected article shows that providers and health organizations can leverage telehealth to increase not just the availability but also access to mental health services for populations in rural areas of the United States.

It aims to encourage authors to meet the accepted high standards of their field and to restrict the dissemination of research data. Mental health literacy can reduce the negative effects of stigma on care-seeking.
The study also employed a number of validated instruments to assess depression stigma, such as the Stigma Concerns About Mental Health Care Measure (SCMHC), the Social Distance Measure (Social Distance), and the Latino Scale for Antidepressant Stigma Measure.
The majority of the participants in the study spoke Spanish. Therefore, the study did not investigate differences in mental health literacy and stigma between Spanish- and English-speaking participants. The more a person knows about depression, the more likely they are to interact with a depressed individual who has received treatment. Education level influences mental health literacy. A higher level of education increases mental health literacy. Participants were screened for depression using self-reports, which introduces the possibility of reporting bias. The results of the study supported the hypothesis that disease knowledge is a crucial component of treatment adherence. It is possible to improve mental health literacy by assessing education level and providing culturally sensitive care. The study demonstrates that an early assessment of a patient’s educational level at the point of care can be advantageous because it provides insight into intervention options and reduces barriers associated with mental health treatment.

Since it meets the CARP criteria, I would recommend the article by Lopez et al. (2018) to inform professional practice. Since the article was published three years ago, it is current. There are also functional links. As university professors who instruct mental health and social work, the authors are qualified to write about mental health illiteracy and stigma. In addition, the article was published by BMC Public Health, a journal that focuses on the social determinants of health, the behavioral, environmental, and occupational correlates of health and disease, and the community-level effects of health practices, interventions, and policies. In addition, the article is pertinent because it evaluates the role of patient education level as a predictor of mental health literacy. The target audience for this article is mental health care professionals. Therefore, I would recommend it for professional use. In addition, the authors provide references and sources for the information used, lending credibility to the work. The authors provide factual information with the intent of informing mental health providers on how to reduce stigma associated with mental illness. The authors’ lack of bias makes the article suitable for use as a professional guide.

Methodology for Locating and Analyzing Peer-Reviewed Research

When identifying and analyzing a peer-reviewed article, I verify that it meets the following standards: Published in a peer-reviewed journal; Contains an abstract on page one; Includes the headings introduction, literature review, methods, and findings; Contains citations throughout the text and a bibliography at the end; Includes credentials of authors affiliated with a university or research institution (Kulczycki et al., 2019). In addition, I evaluate whether the article’s topic is narrowly focused and thoroughly explored. I determine whether the article contributes new, original research to a specific subfield of the subject. Furthermore, I consider the article’s language. The language and content of peer-reviewed research should be technical and formal, with complex ideas and arguments, an objective tone, and an analytical perspective (Kulczycki et al., 2019). Lastly, I determine if the article has a straightforward appearance with minimal use of color, graphics, and images.

Effective Strategies I’ve Employed to Locate Peer-Reviewed Research

Utilizing the library’s research databases and limiting my search to scholarly, peer-reviewed articles are effective strategies for locating peer-reviewed research (López-Cózar et al., 2019). The databases contain a peer review limiter option that restricts the articles retrieved to only peer-reviewed journals. Using Google Scholar to search for articles by title or author is a second strategy. Google Scholar allows users to search multiple sources from a single location (López-Cózar et al., 2019). In addition, it facilitates the retrieval of articles, books, theses, and abstracts.
I intend to use the PubMed database to retrieve research that has been peer-reviewed. Journals in PubMed are peer-reviewed and pertinent to my field of study because they cover health, biomedicine, and related fields (Kang et al., 2021). PubMed is also appropriate because it enables searches across multiple NLM literature resources, including PubMed Central (PMC), MEDLINE, and Bookshelf.

Conclusion

Peer review ensures that scientific journals respond to significant research questions and draw accurate conclusions based on expert experiments. If an article satisfies the CARP criteria of currency, authority, relevance/reliability, and purpose, it can be considered suitable for professional practice. My method for analyzing a peer-reviewed article involves examining the publisher, abstract, citations, references, credentials of the authors, topic focus, and appearance. By limiting the search to peer-reviewed articles in the library databases and utilizing Google Scholar, one can locate peer-reviewed articles.

The emergency section of a health facility is one of the most critical areas that address urgent care needs of patients. Despite having staff from different specialties, nurses are the most professionals found in the emergency departments of care facilities. Notably, due to nurse shortage across most health facilities, focus has been made to allow the professionals to work in shifts to balance care services to patients (Svirsko et al., 2019). However, scheduling nurses in an emergency department is a daunting task and time-consuming to leadership in a health organization. Being able to balance shift hours in order to achieve sufficient nurse-staffing levels at the emergency department requires the implementation of a mathematical model to satisfy preferences of nurses in this section. The present excerpt delves into how mathematical modeling can be used to improve nurse-scheduling process at the emergency department of care facilities. It also uses a template to provide a comprehensive approach in the identification and analysis of peer-reviewed research required for evidence-based practice.

Nonetheless, information present in the material relate with my areas of interest a family nurse practitioner with a specific interest in the emergency care. Notably, findings from the publication provides information to leadership of health organizations on the necessity of scheduling shift days and nights for nurses in ways that guarantee satisfaction for the professionals (Tricco et al., 2018). While this article was intended for emergency department, I would recommend it in all other departments because of its necessity to address shift hours which is always a bone of contention in most care facilities occasioned by shortage of health staff.
