- Both national nurse associations and the Board of nursing are led by directors elected that mainly consist of nurses and other members. The Board of Nurses is not always involved in the drafting of legislation. Also, they cannot oppose or support the proposed bills during legislative processes.
National nursing associations provide opportunities for general membership and can sometimes target specific roles, including critical care nurses and student nurses. National nurses associations often gain strength through expansive collaboration and exchange of ideas. Advanced practice registered nurses is always required to have advanced educational achievement, preferably Master’s level. At this level, they are supposed to have research skills as well as knowledge of evidence-based practices. Thus, they are the main agents when it comes to the provision or delivery of quality care to different patients. The Alabama Board of Nursing is mainly involved in the promotion and safeguarding of health and safety of the members of the public through the formulation of policies aimed at ensuring the nurse and other healthcare professionals adhere to the best practices that lead to the delivery of high-quality care.

Regulation for Nursing Practice Staff Development Meeting
Nursing is a very highly regulated profession. There are over 100 boards of nursing and national nursing associations throughout the United States and its territories. Their existence helps regulate, inform, and promote the nursing profession. With such numbers, it can be difficult to distinguish between BONs and nursing associations, and overwhelming to consider various benefits and options offered by each.
Both boards of nursing and national nursing associations have significant impacts on the nurse practitioner profession and scope of practice. Understanding these differences helps lend credence to your expertise as a professional. In this Assignment, you will practice the application of such expertise by communicating a comparison of boards of nursing and professional nurse associations. You will also share an analysis of your state board of nursing.

The Nurse Practice Act and the Board of Nursing generally define advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) practice; however, additional laws and regulations may affect practice and other boards may have a role to play. For example, the clinical nurse specialist (CNS) is subject to the same scope of practice as any other registered nurse in the state because the Nurse Practice Act does not explicitly state the CNS category and in some states nurse-midwives are governed by a Board of Midwifery or Public Health (APRN State Law and Regulation, 2017). Though not clearly stated in state statutes, CRNAs’ scope of practice is fairly standard but in order to ensure public safety and uphold the practice’s scope, it is crucial that APRNs comprehend how their scope of practice is defined by relevant state statutes, rules, and regulations, as well as any opinions issued by the state regulatory agency, given the differences between APRNs and these legal frameworks (APRN State Law and Regulation, 2017).
State of California
Before 2023, APRNs are required to work under the supervision of Physicians in California but certified nurse practitioners will be able to apply to work independently starting in 2023 when Assembly Bill 890 became operative on 1/1/23 after being signed into law in September 2020 creating two new categories of Nurse Practitioners (NPs) by law, allowing them to operate outside of standard operating procedures within a specified scope of practice (Nurse Practitioner Expanded Scope of Practice in California – MIEC, 2023). 103 NP Works in a group setting such as a clinic, hospital, or medical group with at least one physician and practices without standard operating procedures within the population focus of their national certification. They also adhere to the rules set forth in Business and Profession Code Section 2837.103. and 104 NP 104 NP functions in line with Business and Professions Code Section 2837.104 and have the ability to operate autonomously outside of a group environment, including running their own practice and using non-standardized procedures within the demographic that their national certification is focused on and must have at least three years working as a 103 NP (Nurse Practitioner Expanded Scope of Practice in California – MIEC, 2023). According to their education and training, 103 and 104 NPs may carry out the following tasks under the new law without following set protocols: Make a more thorough evaluation like organize, carry out, and evaluate diagnostic processes, order diagnostic radiologic procedures and treat a patient based on the results or findings, perform or interpret clinical laboratory procedures, determine the differential and primary diagnoses and provide therapeutic measures, such as diagnosing, prescribing, initiating therapy, and referring patients to agencies, providers, and community resources and also prescribe, manage, dispense, and provide pharmacological agents, such as OTC, legend, and controlled substances (Nurse Practitioner Expanded Scope of Practice in California – MIEC, 2023).
State of Georgia
In the state of Georgia, the nurse practitioner offers individuals, families, and groups advanced practice nursing care and medical services specific to their area of expertise, with a focus on disease prevention and promotion of health as well as the diagnosis and treatment of both acute and chronic conditions. When necessary, the nurse practitioner works with a range of people to diagnose and treat the health issues that their clients are experiencing by following a written protocol for nurses, which is a document that has been agreed upon and signed by both the nurse and a licensed physician detailing the medical acts that the physician has delegated to the nurse and allows for prompt consultation with the delegating physician or a substitute physician in case the delegating physician is not available (GA – GAC, n.d.). The APRN is also required to do preparation and execution of documentation pertaining to every medical act permitted by a documented nurse protocol, such as the prescription and dispensing of hazardous medications, the ordering and administration of controlled substances, and the ordering of medical treatments and diagnostic tests (GA – GAC, n.d.). Unlike in California where moving forward APRNs will be allowed the opportunity to practice independently, in the state of Georgia they are still required to work closely with a delegated Physician.
The state of Georgia mandating APRNs to function under the supervision of delegated Physicians limits the APRNs in their practice in my opinion and I think it will be beneficial to the state and the people who live in Georgia if they are allowed to practice independently moving forward as will be the case with the State of California. This will go a long way to increase the amount of independent Providers available to take care of patients. Having to refer to a Physician or be limited is not fun and that is why I am happy that I live in California and cannot wait to someday become a 104 NP.
