The health of community is important to ensure that people remains healthy and productive. As nurses, it is crucial to be interested in the health of communities and explore how people live, effects of social determinants of health, and opportunities for health promotion. The purpose of this presentation is to describe Sun City Center from a health dimension. The first section describes the community and its boundaries, including geographic, geopolitical, and phenomenological features. The section that follows includes a summary of community assessment primarily focusing on funding sources and partnerships. Other sections include summary of the interview with community health provider, opportunity for health promotion, and a summary of key findings.

Sun City Center is a unique community in many aspects. Regarding the people living in the community, mostly are retirees seeking a

comfort in old age. The median age of the residents is 72 years (Data USA, n.d.). Geographical and geopolitical features are other unique elements about Sun City Center. It is adjacent to Tampa Bay and Apollo Beach, implying that there is plenty of fun for people who love life at the beach. As a self-contained retirement community, Sun City Center is not gated or under any unique political control. People usually self-govern themselves as they try to keep the place safe and peaceful for everyone. As former workers, most people living here are financially stable and highly educated.

Ethnic composition shows how people live, diversity, and dominance. It further indicates privileges and the people’s ability to live comfortably. Statistics shows that Sun City Center is predominately occupied by whites since foreign-born citizens only occupy 7.9% of the population (Data USA, n.d.). Phenomenological features have much to do with structures that optimize health and keep the people productive. Some of the unique structures include nearby medical care, plenty of nature, and housing facilities. A medical care within the community reduces the costs and inconveniences associated with traveling long distances to seek medical attention. Plenty of nature implies good weather and housing facilities improve people’s living standards.

Social interactions are a part of an active and healthy community. All communities should have avenues for social interactions for optimal physical and mental health. Sun City Center offers plenty of such avenues through golf activities. Other opportunities include clubs for fitness, dance, and arts. Common goals enhance the community spirit and give people reasons for social interaction and living cohesively. Sun City Center’s residents look forward to comfort after retirement in serene environments. Its main barrier to progress is the lack of diversity given that the population is predominantly white. Challenges include extreme weather due to hurricanes, although rare, and the dense development which reduces space.

Social determinants of health influence people’s health significantly. Artiga and Hinton (2018) defined social determinants of health as the conditions of environments where people are born, grow, and work. One of the leading determinants of health in Sun City Center is a good location. People can access everything needed within the community. Other determinants include low crime rates and affordable housing. Low crime rates imply that people can afford social amenities and are secure. The nearby medical center makes health care affordable and accessible. An educated population can make wise decisions regarding health, lifestyles, dietary choices, and other factors affecting overall health.

Other indicators include nutrition, activity levels, and sleep. Regarding nutrition, the community can access food within its boundaries although obesity is still a concern. As Wood et al. (2020) found, the COVID-19 pandemic minimized movement and physical activity, promoting sedentary living. Despite the plenty of recreational facilities and community resource centers, Sun City Center’s residents have underused them since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic. Sleep and rest are other key indicators of good health and high quality of life. No major threats to sleep and rest can be identified and crimes are low. The community is also sexually non-reproductive since it is occupied by elder adults.
