Discussion: Evidence Base in Design

I chose to elaborate on the bill proposed in March of 2023 that ensures transgender citizens receive appropriate opportunities to housing, healthcare, education, employment, and other basic necessities (A Resolution Recognizing That It Is the Duty of the Federal Government to Develop and Implement a Transgender Bill of Rights, 2023). The transgender bill of rights that was proposed would ensure equality for all transgender, nonbinary people in promoting equality to ensure they have the same access to basic needs as every other citizen in the United States.

One article researched that is recently published and peer-reviewed found that people who identify as LGBTQI+ were far more likely to experience homelessness than their counterparts (Fraser et al., 2019). This finding suggests that there is a need to promote safety of housing regarding those who identify as LGBTQI. Providing housing assistance to the community which is fair and does not discriminate is a public health issue that the bill proposed would help to integrate into society to assist those who may need support. Another article that is recently published and peer-reviewed found that unemployment and underemployment of transgender people created another disparity for the population in food scarcity (Russomanno et al., 2019). This provides a need for a healthcare bill that will ensure security of employment, food, and housing for some of the most vulnerable citizens in our society.

Another article found that around 61% of those who identify as transexual have suicidal ideation in their lifetime (Thoma, 2019). This finding expresses a fundamental need for proper access to mental health services for those who identify as LGBTQI. Ensuring proper mental health coverage for this population could decrease the overall outcome of suicide and suicidal ideation.

Given the disproportionate statistics found in data regarding transgenders homelessness, mental health, and food insecurity, the government must take action to ensure equality in basic necessities can be adequately met for those who identify as LGBTQI. This bill proposes that the United States invest in mental health services specifically for transgender citizens, investing in community services to decrease violence against transgender population, and many other acts to increase the quality of life for the LGBTQI community (A Resolution Recognizing That It Is the Duty of the Federal Government to Develop and Implement a Transgender Bill of Rights, 2023). Evidence and statistical data prove the need for implementation of protective bills to ensure equality and basic human needs are met for all of our society, as we all have unique contributions. Expansion of this bill would only be the first step to equality, but it is a needed one.

Discussion: Evidence Base in Design

Question Description
Discussion 1: Evidence Base in Design

There can be a lot of disagreement when politics and medical science collide. Anecdotes or hearsay are sometimes used as evidence to support a point. Despite these and other challenges, evidence-based approaches are increasingly being used to inform health policy decisions about disease causes, intervention strategies, and societal issues. For instance, consider the introduction of childhood vaccinations and the use of evidence-based arguments to support their safety.

You will identify a recently proposed health policy and share your analysis of the evidence in support of this policy in this Discussion.

To Get Ready:

Examine the Congress website linked in the Resources and identify one recently proposed health policy (within the last 5 years).
Examine the health policy you identified and reflect on its background and development.
BY WEEK 7’S DAY 3
Post a description of the health policy you chose, as well as a brief history of the problem or issue being addressed. Explain whether you believe there is sufficient evidence to support the proposed policy and why. Provide specifics and examples.

You should proofread your paper. However, do not rely solely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so

indicates a lack of effort on your part, and your grade will suffer as a result. Papers with a high number of misspelled words and grammatical errors will be penalized. Before submitting your paper, go over it in silence and then aloud, and make any necessary changes. It is often beneficial to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Uncorrected mistakes are preferable to handwritten corrections.

Use a standard 10 to 12 point typeface (10 to 12 characters per inch). Smaller or compressed type, as well as papers with narrow margins or single spacing, are difficult to read. It is preferable to allow your essay to exceed the recommended number of pages rather than attempting to compress it into fewer pages.

Large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are also unacceptable, waste trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced, and have a one-inch margin on all four sides of each page. When submitting hard copies, use white paper and print with dark ink. It will be difficult to follow your argument if it is difficult to read your essay.

When politics and medical science intersect, there can be much debate. Sometimes anecdotes or hearsay are misused as evidence to support a particular point. WEEKLY RESOURCES

To Prepare:

  • Review the Congress website provided in the Resources and identify one recent (within the past 5 years) proposed health policy.
  • Review the health policy you identified and reflect on the background and development of this health policy.

By Day 3 of Week 7

Post a description of the health policy you selected and a brief background for the problem or issue being addressed. Which social determinant most affects this policy? Explain whether you believe there is an evidence base to support the proposed policy and explain why. Be specific and provide examples.

By Day 6 of Week 7

Respond to at least two of your colleagues* on two different days by either supporting or respectfully challenging their explanation on whether there is an evidence base to support the proposed health policy they described.
