The authors advanced informed caring practice in nursing through discussion that promotes patients engagement in patient-nurse paradigms within the framework of middle range theory of caring. Middle range theories have the potential to provide insight into discussions centered on the role played by nurses in patent engagement.

Caring in nursing is patient-focused. The involvement of patients in their own care through making competent, well-informed decisions about their health and health care is known as patient engagement.

The middle-range theory is developed and advanced through patient engagement. The need for relevant discipline-specific theories continues to develop at the middle range level of discourse (Liehr & Smith, 2017). It is important to state that specific population- or disease-related theories are not developed at the middle range. However, a nursing theory developed within the framework of the middle range theory can be applied across populations and individuals with different health conditions. This explains why the middle range theories guide research and practice in nursing.
