DQ: Describe three significant skills that are essential to have in the role as project manager.

SAMPLE 1

Being a project manager, one must hold essential skills. Some of these skills include organization, leadership, and good communication. As mentioned by Miller (2019), the key responsibilities of a PM are initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing. And in order to get these responsibilities to work, one must be competent in the above skills. For one, communication; PM is all about communicating with the team, via emails, calls, check-ins and meetings (Miller, 2019). The status of an implementation must be communicated as well as obstacles or roadblocks, as well as the stakeholders to receive information. Then there is organization; it is important to be organized. One way of being organized is through time management. In order to ensure that a project is going as planned, keep track with timesheets, or a project software (Miller, 2019). This allows one to see the status of costs, spending etc. and lastly, there is leadership. Leadership is always vital when working with a team. Through the right leadership skills comes along communication and organization; there three work side-by-side in completing tasks and achieving success.

Emotional intelligent is important in nursing practices because it helps to understand people better (Whitney, 2018). Self-awareness is one of the important elements in emotional intelligent and it is the capacity to notice and comprehend your own feelings. Being conscious of the impact of your actions, moods, and emotions on other people goes beyond simply being aware of your own feelings. Developing self-awareness as a leader will strengthen not only individual performance but organizational performance as well. Ultimately, the immense amount of understanding, trustworthiness and wisdom that self-aware leaders possess equips them with critical skills for success.

Two strategies to promote a high reliability organization are (1) reluctance to simplify and (2) preoccupation with failure (Veazie et al. 2019). It is important to understand and accept that work is difficult, and there is a potential to fail in new and unexpected ways. And with failure, near misses should be looked at as ways to improve.

project manager must possess, for me. These are the characteristics which help a project manager to convey the details of the project change he/she desires to achieve clearly and effectively, delivering it on time despite the hurdles along the way, and with the right people tasked to help in carrying it out with proper guidance and lead. Effective communication is crucial in the nursing profession as clarity and accuracy of the information we give to our patient and the people we work with can make or break patient care outcomes. Scheduling and time management in nursing is crucial to finish all the tasks which can help the patient get better.. Leadership is necessary to make everything get done properly, timely and according to the rules and policy for the patient’s safety. Leaders must know how to motivate people to work and contribute more to achieving their goals.

An example of this when instructing a patient on how to take their home medication before discharge. Their compliance depends on how clearly, they understand the nurse instruction, thus knowing how to effectively communicate equates successful implementation leading to achievement of desired outcomes, which also goes with project management. When a project manager knows how to communicate effectively, people working with him/her know what to do and how to do it properly, as they understand everything clearly and accurately. Scheduling and time management is crucial as project managers must deliver a successful result in time. Projects entail budget, time, and effort thus, must be carefully planned before execution to ensure that everything will work smoothly but have also anticipated whatever will happen along the way to ensure finishing the project on time. Leaders must know how to guide and recognize his/her team members’ efforts to motivate them more to contribute to achieve project success.

High Reliability can be promoted through pre-occupation with failure (PSnet, 2019) which means everyone in the organization knows that somehow and somewhere a failure can happen, thus, they become sensitive and more cautious and anticipatory of failure and think out of the box thus, they are prepared and can respond immediately when such failure occurs and if it thus happened, it is a learning opportunity for everyone not to be complacent. Another means of promoting high reliability is through being committed to resilience (PSNet, 2019). In connection with the pre-occupation with failure, this commitment to resilience entails having more initiative to do risk assessment and monitoring of the organization system. This way, they can identify potential failure and formulate corrective measures to take when such failure finally surfaces, to ensure safety.

SAMPLE 2

High-reliability organizations (HRO) include the traits of leadership commitment, processes of improvement over time, and a culture of safety. They operate in environments of high risk and complexity while avoiding catastrophes. Healthcare in hospital environments exhibits these concepts if they are “highly reliable.” Often, projects are undertaken in acute care facilities for long-range upgrades. This assumes a project manager possesses the background to lead the goals put forth by stakeholders.

Of the skills needed for a good project manager, the following are critical.

  1. Quality communicators
  2. Technical competence
  3. Critical thinkers
  4. Excellent leaders

Stephen Covey, Ph.D., the author of Principle-Centered Leadership defined relationships fostering superb leadership and followership with four principles.  They are trustworthiness (relationship with self), trust (relationship with others), managerial (getting the job done effectively), and organizational (capacity to organize other persons effectively). A culture of safety is important for the support of leaders and is the main concept good leaders provide. The four qualities listed above are directly related to Dr. Covey’s second and fourth principles contributing to a culture of organizational trust.

Skills essential for quality nursing include:

  1. Professionalism
  2. Empathy
  3. Critical thinking and creative problem solving
  4. Excellent communication ability

These skills, and others, contribute to the capacity of nurses to become project leaders in a healthcare environment. Personally, I experienced a project leader in the health profession of dentistry. As a contract dentist in the Indian Health Service, Sells IHS district in southern Arizona, I contributed concepts to the ranking Naval IHS officer as he planned the project of a new, modern dental office. This required input from non-dentists, our team members, and dental manufacturers. Financial input was provided by the U. S. government and the local Indian tribes. This was complex and needed coordination with numerous stakeholders from very different backgrounds. Our leader had the capacity to keep the project on track despite delays and the need for revisions in many details. We opened the new dental clinic about 12 months after the intended goal and provided services to the local population as required. The leader/manager received a lot of thanks from all of us.

The strategies of providing a psychologically safe space and high-quality verbal and written communication process along with knowledge of the project details are needed for reaching a high-quality organization. We witnessed this as the Sells area dental office welcomed patients for treatment.
