DQ: Discuss the purpose of strategic planning in a health care environment

The purpose of strategic planning in a health care environment is not only important in that setting but any business setting as this creates the foundation. It allows systematic approaches to any situation, especially with how complex or simple some procedures might be, this gives guidelines any of those situations. But as it can become more complex with each situation being different, there are planning committees that are available for each organization to help plan for any future issues. Factors that may affect future planning in an organization are budgeting, level of staff, time and level of care (Whitney, 2019). A useful tool in future planning is with the SWOT analysis, identifying the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to the the organization or the situation at hand. This can then help guide towards a decision that is needed to be made.

There are many reasons why emotional intelligence is important in leadership. First, leaders with high emotional intelligence are able to create a positive work environment. They do this by maintaining open communication, showing empathy and understanding, and promoting a healthy balance between work and life. Emotionally intelligent leaders are better able to relate to and motivate their team members (Whitney, 2018). They are able to understand what drives and inspires people, and can use this knowledge to build a cohesive and high-performing team. Lastly, leaders with high emotional intelligence are better equipped to deal with difficult situations and people. They are able to stay calm under pressure and make decisions based on logic and reason, rather than emotion.

A strategic plan is necessary in all organizations to direct and point the purpose of the organization. Public health care is a very complex organization. The strategic plan aids in keeping a unity as a team in the organization and also makes the organization more appealing to the public. In the case of a hospital, the public will be able to view the hospital’s mission and vision (Health Care Business Today).

drive operational improvement and interventions that enhance the quality and safety of care (Dennis, 2019).”

Factors that may affect future planning in an organization are polices, attitudes, systems, and structures (Bahadori et al., 2018).” According to the article, studying and understanding these factors will help achieve the goals that are trying to be set in place.

A tool that can be used for future planning is the SWOT matrix. The S stands for strength, W is for weakness, O for opportunities, and T for threats (Rodriguez et al., 2012).

Hi Mirna as I read about post I saw how you talked about factors that can impact future planning and how these are policies, attitudes and systems made within the organization. This is important to remember that every organization has their own agendas and how one place will not be the same as others and is important to keep in mind. Just like how when I am at work at a different units, there will be different ways in operation compared to another location and using the SWOT would help in planning for that day. I plan on using the strategies you laid out at my next locations for either my testing unit or vaccination unit.

Strategic planning is a viable and valuable technique for guiding all businesses, including healthcare businesses. Strategic planning is a programmed, systematic, rational, and holistic approach that incorporates the short, medium, and long term, allowing the healthcare organization to focus on meaningful and long-term changes. The size, complexity, and differentiation of the service supplied determine the organizational level at which the strategic planning process is significant. A cardiology department, a hemodynamic unit, or an electrophysiology unit can all be considered appropriate levels if their plans are compatible with those of higher levels. Each unit’s leader promotes the planning process, an essential element of their job.

Making changes without a plan almost always leads to the system failing. Strategic planning customized to the changes made is more appropriate; the two go hand in hand. The expanding population and need for health care, for example, necessitate the planned implementation of new technology like computerized data storage systems. Similarly, the emergence of new infectious diseases needs prophylactic measures such as vaccination regularly. Even though changes to the healthcare system and strategic plans are costly, the law requires them. The enhancements must be implemented and organized correctly; otherwise, the system will fail.

Hello Zohreh

Great post! Very well explained. Strategic planning in health care organizations helps medical institutions operate successfully with respect to business objectives and optimal standards. Professionals looking to gain a better understanding of health care strategies to help analyze, create and implement them may need advance education beyond a bachelor’s degree.

Hello Zohreh, Thanks for an informative post. Strategic planning is necessary in all the areas especially health-care strategic planning has evolved over time. Strategic planning is what nurses do on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis as they plan for 5 years, 10 years, and 20 years and the methods they will need to reach their objectives. In other words, planning is ongoing, and being organized, thoughtful, and purposeful as a nurse management is a good practice. Expanding services to broader populations was a goal due to managed care and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, as firms sought competitive costs. The current strategic planning trend is consumer-driven, which means that it is influenced by how satisfied customers are with the services offered. Many elements influence an organization’s future planning, including budgeting, personnel competence, levels of service delivered, and time. A SWOT analysis is a useful planning method for identifying a project’s, institution’s, or organization’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT).(Whitney.2018).

Strategic planning is the process in which organizational leaders purposefully look ahead into the future, outline goals for the organization, and develop a process to reach those goals (Whitney, 2018). Strategic planning is ongoing, constantly because the planner is not only planning for short term goals, but also long-term goals. It helps to create goals that meet the mission and vision of the organization. Nurses are constantly strategic planning, daily, weekly, monthly, annually and every 5-10 years, depending on what goals they’re trying to achieve personally, within the unit and its staff members, and within the organization’s mission. Strategic planning is very important for nurses in leadership positions to manage because it allows them to set the “conceptual framework” for which the future holds, short-term, and long-term wise.   Among the priorities of the nurse leader, strategizing should be at the top of the list, in order to achieve identified goals and continuous or ongoing planning. There are factors that affect future planning in an organization, such as, budgeting, level of staff expertise, levels of care provided and time. The SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis tool is useful in determining the decisions, planning, and understanding of the direction of an organization. Other factors can include insubordinate staff members, a pandemic, scheduling of staff members or patients, and/or resources (staff, supplies, facility, etc.).

It goes without saying, nurses cannot function without strategic planning. It is a vital part of their daily work life and their career. “A robust strategic plan is a critical component to ensure patient care and the best possible outcomes” (Lal, 2020). It keeps the nurses engaged and the organization refreshed and reenergized. Strategic planning is also vital to the Nursing Process. Assessment is strategic review; Diagnosis is prioritizing goals and identifying the end goal; Planning is strategic objectives while creating plan; implementation of the strategic plan; and Evaluation, evaluating effectiveness of the strategic plan.
